Qantas Delays/Cancellations

Re: General Qantas Delays/Cancellations/etc. Discussion

Getting rather annoyed with QF1474 SYD to CBR being cancelled and I'm booted off to 1477 which departs an hour later. Didn't help with the ground staff telling me I've done well as I'm only an hour's late rather than being delayed till 1500. Should've booked VA

Re: General Qantas Delays/Cancellations/etc. Discussion

The Monday 11 May 2015 QF30 from HKG did not depart until 2256, two hours and 26 minutes late. It is forecast to arrive MEL at 0950 this morning instead of 0800. As there is no QF29 back to HKG today, that route is unaffected any further, but QF35 from MEL to SIN is to be delayed from 1145 to an anticipated 1215.

The delayed QF27 yesterday arrived in SCL at 1209 and departed three hours later at 1509 as QF28 to SYD, where it is forecast to be only a quarter of an hour late tonight when it arrives at 1800. It had been turned around in SYD yesterday between its arrival at 1113 ex LAX and its departure at 1256 for SCL, a fast turnaround and good work: an hour and 43 minutes from stop to start for a Jumbo is impressive given that it is not a smaller single aisle aircraft. How the cleaners can do a proper job in say 50 minutes to an hour (given that they cannot be on board when passengers are alighting or boarding) surprises me. Hopefully not too many crumbs remain on the carpet or worse by the windows, where to my amazement some aircraft around the world (not a particular reference to QF) manage to eventually attract occasional coughroaches or other vermin.

Re: General Qantas Delays/Cancellations/etc. Discussion

3 A380's on the ground in SYD this morning, assume from LHR, LAX and DFW, quite a sight!

Re: General Qantas Delays/Cancellations/etc. Discussion

QF35 from MEL to SIN departed much later than the anticipated delay above, being off blocks at 1333, almost two hours late. QF expects it to be 80 minutes late into SIN at 1915. Neither QF36 tonight from SIN to MEL or the BNE bound flight, QF52, are showing as 'delayed' at this stage.

Impressive only if you're not a passenger.

Last year Mrs C and I came in on a full QF94 and there were two other A380s (SQ and CX or CZ, I think) and it took us over two hours (9.40am - 11.45am) to get out of the terminal at Tullamarine. The queue with our luggage trolleys snaked back and forth through the arrivals hall around pillars and carousels like some demented samba line dance, with Customs officers yelling at everyone to get in line (as we all know, shouting at people who don't understand English, in English makes us more understood).

Total and utter shambles.

C.
{should I cross-post this to the terrible Tulla thread?}

Re: General Qantas Delays/Cancellations/etc. Discussion

coriander, your sagacious comments also indeed belong in any recent Melbourne Tullamarine Airport thread. You may have the third airline you named incorrect. You partly jest, but many Melburnians can relate to what you say even if we personally have been treated well by Immigration staff (Customs staff can be officious), but they are all now merged into trendily named Border Protection.

Tonight's (12 May 2015) flagship QF1 departed SYD 45 minutes late at 1645. On Saturday 9 May 2015 it departed SYD 91 minutes late. These late departures make it harder to arrive LHR on time, a sensitive topic with LHR management given the publicly reported QF manager's email that surfaced in the last few weeks:

http://www.australianfrequentflyer....rogram/could-qf-lose-slot-heathrow-67452.html

In the last couple of days, QF1 arrived LHR 100 minutes late (Sunday morning) 22 minutes late (Monday) and 34 minutes late (today, 12 May.) This afternoon's late departure is expected in DXB 45 minutes late so some snappy footwork will be required to get it in and out as quickly as possible.

Quite a few airlines manage to have their flights often running early a few hundred kilometres from LHR, so QF may need to slow its timetables if this continues. As AFF member Economy_Gold commented, the problem appears to be largely approaching, in and departing DXB, although some recent MEL flights have managed to cut down the time on the ground at DXB. Late departures from SYD is an additional factor that has crept into the mix, as from what I have observed QF1 previously had an excellent record in departing SYD within 15 minutes of (at this time of year) 1600 - the official measure of aviation 'regular public transport' punctuality.

Unfortunately for QF these problems strengthen the case for returning Australia - LHR own metal flights to popular SIN (regularly and understandably voted the best airport in the world) although the extent of the tieup with EK makes this close to impossible in the short term. DXB airport is rarely rated in the top ten worldwide for good reason, since it is a third class copy of SIN and arguably inferior to ICN and HKG, to name two further competitors for Australia - Europe passengers.

Yep, I've been through SIN, KUL, ICN, GMP, KIX, HND, NRT, HKG and TPE. All of which are nicer then DXB. Even PVG and PEK are better then DXB if you ignore the PLA caused ATC issues.

Re: General Qantas Delays/Cancellations/etc. Discussion

In post number 1224 above QF had not advised, but due to QF35's anticipated 1940 hours arrival in SIN tonight, QF36 from SIN to MEL is delayed until 2040 - once more, probably a bit better prediction than achievable in practice. However QF suggests the flight will only be 25 minutes late arriving in MEL tomorrow morning at 0545.

Re: General Qantas Delays/Cancellations/etc. Discussion

The 8 left DFW on time, but will be slightly late due to a filed flight time of 17hrs 22m

Often happens unfortunately. It happened to a friend of my daughter's once and resulted in her missing her Jetstar connection to NZ in Sydney. She was only going for the weekend, so decided to give up and return to Canberra and then Qantas charged her because her return flight on Sunday was a cheapie and couldn't be changed - she was gold status as well. :)

What the ?????? So QF are late and she misses a connecting flight on a group airline and they charge her to get back home. That really is screwed up.

Re: General Qantas Delays/Cancellations/etc. Discussion

QF11 has been delayed from 0950 to a forecast 1300 in departing SYD today for LAX. FlightAware - Flight Tracker / Flight Status / Flight Tracking suggests that a B744 not an A388 is operating it today.

Once again, QF63 was late ex SYD this morning for JNB, departing 55 minutes behind time at 1045. It is expected in JNB 50 minutes late at 1700, meaning a late departure for QF64, though not necessarily a late SYD arrival early tomorrow afternoon.

QF127 only departed SYD seven minutes late at 1012 but is not due in the Asian Harbour City until 1845, an hour and 25 minutes late. At one stage mid morning it seemed that SYD flights were only using the east-west 07/25 runway due to a reasonably strong westerly wind, so that may have something to do with the loss of time enroute.

Similarly QF81 only departed SYD three minutes late at 1023 but is expected to be 40 minutes late into SIN.

QF11 will be an A380 today, not a 744. QF93 is currently a 744 ER. Currently NW of New Zealand, with an impressive arrival time into LAX.

Re: General Qantas Delays/Cancellations/etc. Discussion

QF11 has been further delayed to depart at an estimated 1400 hours, making it more than four hours late leaving SYD. Thank you Dmac6345.

UPDATE: The website shown delay was initially amended to 1415, but is now until 1430. The QF website still shows it as arriving in LAX by 0930, three hours late, a gain of an hour and 40 minutes on the timetable.

I know - crazy wasn't it!!

Re: General Qantas Delays/Cancellations/etc. Discussion

Today's SYD - LAX QF11 is now delayed until 2000 tonight, a 10 hour delay. It is forecast to be at LAX at the very exact time of 1614.

With the delay it is highly likely that a new crew may be required, as by the looks of earlier advice from QF the flight had originally been expected to be three hours late, not 10. This is now a major delay.

And yet this is on a day when (possibly due to low travel demand in May, not being school holidays or quite yet the absolute peak visiting season for Australians going to Europe) QF1 is (unusually) not operating ex SYD or DXB.

A new crew has been called out as the original crew were going to run out of hours

Re: General Qantas Delays/Cancellations/etc. Discussion

milehighclub, when a delay such as this occurs (and it may not have been known as to its full extent until 1430 today given the change made on the website) do QF (and other airlines) change the meals that were loaded with an instruction to the catering centre to prepare new meals given that passengers are now boarding at dinner time, not before lunch, or is this impractical (or too costly and as a side issue, wasteful) with five and a half hours to have changes made?

Or would the prepared meals simply be returned by Q Catering to the chillers or however they are stored at the catering centre and again loaded onto the truck at say 1830 or whatever suitable time for a 2000 amended time departure?

I am talking about any flight where it is long enough to make a significant delay alter the meal periods during which passengers are in the air. The long haul flights are among these.

I'm booked on QF11 today. Passengers could not be accommodated for on alternative flights as all other US-bound departures was fully booked. Everyone was given meal vouchers or told to go back to the lounges.

Re: General Qantas Delays/Cancellations/etc. Discussion

QF11's departure has now been delayed until 2100. Maybe this will prove correct, but it is sometimes an ominous sign. 0950 this morning became 1300, then 1400, 1415, 1430, 2000 and now 2100. It becomes a bit more urgent at an airport with a curfew.
