Qantas Delays/Cancellations

Heard from a friend that the Tuesday evening QF12 LAX to SYD has been delayed by half a day to Wednesday morning. Any idea why?

Yes, that's correct, with departure estimated from LAX on Wednesday 13 April 2022 (today) at 1130 instead of very late night on Tuesday 12 at 2255 hours, so SYD arrival becomes a suggested 1930 on Thursday evening instead of 0655 in the morning, 755 minutes late.

Not sure why, as QF93 from MEL that departed on 12 April is an expected one minute early into LAX while QF11 was also not delayed.

In addition to the projected delay for QF1 (SYD - DRW - LHR) on Wednesday 13 April from the normal 1545 hours departure to one at 2125 mid evening, the long distance QF7 from SYD to DFW is predicted to push back at 1815 in the early evening, 155 minutes late.

A333 VH-QPI on Tuesday night's QF20 from MNL to SYD arrived this morning at 0717 hours, 47 minutes tardy.

QF69 on Tuesday 12 was at the DEL arrival gate at 2111 hours, 191 minutes late. Regular visitor A332 VH-EBR formed QF70, the 1935 hours DEL back "express" to MEL that was airborne at 2305. Wednesday 13 arrival should be at around 1535 hours, 185 minutes late, so at least it hasn't lost any further time.

Tuesday's QF9 has B789 VH-ZNK and should arrive LHR at 0557 hours, 52 minutes tardy.

Oh dear. Another unexpected overnight stay for QF1 passenger en route. On Tuesday 12, B789 VH-ZNC took off from SYD at 1628 hours, arriving DRW at 2002 hours, 22 minutes late, so essentially uneventful. However the flight is not expected to depart DRW until 1230 hours early this afternoon local time, arriving in LHR at a suggested 2155 on Wednesday 13 April, 920 minutes late.

In theory since QF9 from MEL was in DRW last night from its gate arrival at 1940 hours until takeoff at 2106, some passengers could have transferred to it rather than stay in a DRW hotel, but in practice this means finding luggage in a very short time from the hold and its ULDs, so impractical one would think. I wonder if anyone with HLO was granted this change if there were spare seats?

QF2 on Wednesday that's timetabled as a 2105 hours departure from LHR is predicted to push back at 2325 hours with an eventual SYD arrival at 0710 hours on Good Friday, 15 April, two hours late.

Due to all these delays (including the sudden QF1 unexpected DRW overnighter above), on Holy Thursday, 14 April 2022, QF11 from SYD to LAX is to be delayed in departing from 1015 hours to 2130 hours, 675 minutes late.

Even worse, and not for the first time in recent days, QF7, the scheduled mid afternoon 1540 hours SYD - DFW on Thursday is cancelled, as naturally will be QF12 returning back to SYD.

We don't want to exaggerate but these long distance QFi schedules are in chaos.

Whether the DRW overnight QF1 delay is a result of COVID-19 enforced ("iso") or other staff absenteeism, aircraft failures or some other cause would be interesting.

having a 787 out of service will have major impact on schedules - on top of other issues like the packed crowds in the airport, despite of people arriving early, the staff shortages does not help matters tbh

“We are sorry we had to cancel your flight QF93 from Melbourne at 21:30 on Thu 14 Apr. Go to Manage Booking via qantas.com/yourbooking or the Qantas App to review the options available to you (including Flight Credit or refund). If your booking was made through a travel agent, contact your travel agent for options available to you (including a refund). If a pre-departure COVID-19 test is a requirement, ensure you check and confirm the validity of your test result still meets the timeframe outlined or you may be denied boarding. Check your travel requirements at qantas.com/travelready”

The only choice the website provides is to cancel the booking. What are the chances of a lowly silver being reassigned a seat on another flight? Is it worth being on hold for goodness knows how many hours?

This appears to be a good example of what ACCC is monitoring about Qantas. I suggest it be lodged with the ACCC as a general example of the consumer issues when Qantas explain your rights and then deliberately do not provide follow through or the on-line options necessary to action them, such as a 'refund me' button, forcing passengers to go round and round in circles trying to rebook or be refunded. They have your money so its your problem. QF Customer Service - a growing case study on how it should NOT be done..

A QF787 being out of service is news to me. I’m booked on QF94 for 19 April. Can you expand or point to a source?

Thanks. Been following this thread but missed your post during our travels. These issues cause nightmares with connections!
I understand that too... it is too difficult to catch up with all the competing news like the airport mess, new rule changes and the election too :)

This is excellent advice, but knowing an individual who used to work at the ACCC, it tends to operate on 'volume' of complaints.

So three complaints about a company re the same issue might not see the ACCC investigating, but 50 or 100 may.

The 1540 hours SYD - DFW on Wednesday 13 April is expected to depart 175 minutes late at 1835 hours. As noted above, tomorrow's (Thursday 14's) has got the flick.

Monday 11's QF76 from YVR to SYD, the late night scheduled 2225 hours departed at 1200 'high noon' on Tuesday 12 so SYD arrival looks to be about 2016 hours tonight, 826 minutes behind the timetable.

Also on Wednesday 13, QF19 (1230 hours SYD - MNL, A333 VH-QPJ) was in the sky at 1325 so a 33 minute late at gate arrival - 1923 hours - is predicted.

'The 81' from SYD to SIN (the 1110 hours) is worse, with A332 VH-EBP airborne at 1246 hours, so arrival looks like 1836, 46 minutes behind the timetable.

Class colleague, VH-EBP is operating QF35 (1205 hours MEL - SIN). This one was airborne at 1339 hours so arrival at 1857 hours, 42 late is the similar expectation.

VH-OQK, a much higher capacity A388 has formed QF11 (1015 hours midmorning SYD - LAX). Arrival is also in that '40s' predicted range at 0746 same day, 46 minutes delayed.

A333 VH-QPD was on the eternally unpunctual QF143, the 0930 hours SYD - AKL that took off at 1045 hours for a 1536 hours arrival, 61 late. Going on its performance every day in recent times, don't expect to make an MCT connection to CHC, WLG or elsewhere in Kiwiland.

Continuing with Wednesday 13 April, QF10, the 1450 hours DRW - MEL has B789 VH-ZNH and was airborne at 1611 hours local time. MEL arrival is estimated to be around the 2030 mark, an hour tardy.

QF2 from LHR and DRW arrived at its SYD gate this morning at 0805 hours, 175 minutes behind schedule. VH-ZND then formed the 0945 hours midmorning QF63, the often well patronised SYD - JNB that was in teh sky at 1058. Suggested arrival in the South African major city (but not its capital!) is 1624, only 34 minutes tardy.

Class leader VH-ZNA is today on QF9, the 1430 hours MEL - DRW - LHR that was up up and away at 1523 for a suggested intermediate stop commencing at 1843 hours, 33 minutes behind the timetable.

Its colleague from Sydney, QF1, has been further put back to a 2200 hours estimated pushback tonight, with the DRW stop to occupy 0155 to 0325 - not a favourite 'small hours' time to be awake for most - and subsequent LHR arrival at 1250 hours tomorrow, 375 minutes late.

B789 VH-ZNC on the overnight delayed QF1 (that has become 'QF201') was predicted to depart DRW at 1230 hours (see above) on Wednesday 13 April.

Instead, it pushed back from the gate at 1340, quickly becoming airborne at 1348 hours. It is predicted to arrive LHR today at 2145 hours, meaning the 2105 hours QF2 back to DRW and SYD will be delayed for at least two and a half hours.

Also on Wednesday 13 April, QF7 was in the sky from SYD at 1934. DFW arrival should be at about 1911 hours same day, 191 minutes tardy. VH-ZNG is the B789. The plane had arrived in SYD at 1724 hours, 229 minutes late on QF64 from JNB. (QF63 was delayed yesterday).

QF1 departed SYD at 2219 hours (scheduled 1545) with VH-ZNF that had arrived from YVR a couple of hours ago.

Additionally on Wednesday 13 April, QF103 (A333 VH-QPD, the 1925 hours early evening SYD up to HNL) was in the sky at 2044, with same day arrival 0950 hours, 40 minutes tardy. Te previous four flights northbound on this route (8 to 11 April 2022 inclusive) were between an hour and almost two hours late arriving.

Thursday 14's QF11 (1015 hours SYD - LAX) has been delayed to a mid evening departure at an estimated 2130 hours, 675 minutes behind schedule. Another 'victim' of the B789 troubles.

QF1 ex SYD on Wednesday 13 (B789 VH-ZNF) was in DRW from 0154 on Thursday 14 April to takeoff at 0348, so expected LHR arrival today is 1217 hours, 342 minutes behind the schedule.

In another unforeseen delay, QF9 from MEL yesterday arrived in DRW at 1843, a tolerable 33 minutes late. However it did not become airborne until 0123 hours this morning, meaning suggested LHR arrival becomes 0949 hours, 284 minutes late. This should "just" allow for a timely departure of the 1155 hours scheduled QF10 back to DRW and MEL given that QFi seems able to achieve two hour turnarounds with an aircraft of this capacity.

B789 VH-ZNC on the Tuesday ex SYD QF1 was as noted above delayed overnight in Darwin. It eventually arrived LHR (according to FR24: I couldn't verify elsewhere, so it may have been a bit earlier - on Wednesday 13 April at 2230, although had been expected at 2145 hours. From what I can see the delayed QF2 (the 2105 hours) has yet to depart, which is unsurprising given the time in London is 2340 hours, nine hours behind AEST.

After a quick London turnaround, QF2 departed LHR at 2344, 159 minutes late and promptly took off at 2357 on Wednesday night.

Pre-COVID-19, Qantas received a 'please explain' from Heathrow's airport management about its constant unpunctuality.

That day may not again be far off given the terrible recent performance, set to continue with one B789 being inoperable.

Except that BA are doing it on an hourly basis and QF only once or twice a day.
