Qantas Delays/Cancellations

I'm on this flight on Wednesday. It is never on time by the looks of things.

One can't be as definitive, as every time it runs the circumstances differ, but on Good Friday 15 April 2022, QF23 was in the sky from SYD at 1653 hours with A333 VH-QPE. BKK arrival may be at around 2103 mid evening local time, 263 minutes behind the timetable. The early evening, overnight 1810 hours BKK to SYD (QF24) at a guess may depart at 2225 - 2240.

If this aircraft forms a flight tomorrow such as the 1230 hours SYD - MNL, there's a chance of unpunctuality, especially if "they" don't turn the aircraft around tonight as quickly as surmised.

B789 VH-ZNI on QF9, the mid afternoon 1430 hours MEL - DRW - LHR was not up up and away until 1604 this afternoon despite having been in MEL since arriving at 0553 hours early this morning on QF94 from LAX. DRW arrival is suggested as 1921 hours in the early evening, 71 late, making a close to time Saturday 16 morning arrival for LHR difficult.

Colleague ZNC is on QF1 (SYD to DRW and on to London) that's better as its arrival at DRW tonight should be at 2012 hours, 32 behind. It isn't ideal to have the '1' and the '9' concurrently in DRW as the former Catalina Lounge that QFi uses for its eligible travellers is not large to say the least.

B789 VH-ZNF is on QF10 that arrived DRW at 1609, 169 minutes tardy, and naturally hasn't yet departed for MEL, so at best it'll be two and a half hours late at the Tullamarine gate at which it ceases a long trip.

JohnK, we've never met but I've found many of your posts either amusing or informative, or both. Hope you are OK.

That was very kind of you.
Im fine thanks for asking. We ended up with >2 hour delay. I believe direct BNE-MEL flight was cancelled and 4 were on this flight via SYD and we didn't make the last flight SYD-MEL.

I love helping people out where I can. The couple sent me this SMS

Hi John Many thanks for your kind gesture

Much easier spending 2 hours in qantas club than in public domain

Happy Easter

...what might be the future for QF11 on Saturday 16th?...

QF12, the Thursday 14 April 2255 hours LAX - SYD (A388 VH-OQK) departed at 2342 hours and then took off on the stroke of midnight so SYD arrival on Saturday 16 is suggested as 0733 hours, 38 minutes tardy.

So this was a turnaround of four hours and 32 minutes in LAX.

It can't be extrapolated that tomorrow in SYD to 'reverse' the plane will be as slow as this. Looking at EF, there is a maximum of 83 whY seats vacant (an unreliable guide this far out from a flight according to other AFFers) so in economy at least, the flight is fairly well loaded (though in school holidays/Easter I'd expect better).

QF94, the Thursday 14 April 2130 hours mid evening LAX - MEL (B789 VH-ZNH) was airborne at 2321 so Easter Saturday arrival is estimated as 0733 hours, 93 minutes tardy.

Given that QF23 on Good Friday was so late, arriving BKK with A333 VH-QPE at 2048 hours, 248 minutes behind schedule, it's unsurprising QF2 returning to SYD took off from BKK last night at 2253 with suggested arrival in SYD on Saturday 16 April at 1045 hours, 255 minutes past the allotted.

QF10 on Good Friday (B789 VH-ZNF) arrived MEL at 2215 hours, 165 minutes tardy.

VH-ZNI on QF9 from MEL should have a Saturday LHR arrival at 0546 hours, 41 late.

One note of caution: not only can flight status sites like the respected Swedish FR24 sometimes be confused when flights operate a day late as AFFer Must...Fly! reminded, but occasionally they can be incorrect full stop. For instance, FR24 showed QF93 from MEL to LAX as 'cancelled' on Holy Thursday, 14 April 2022, but according to QFi, this flight operated. When there's doubt, one tries to check multiple sources.

QF103 arrived HNL at 0957 hours, 42 minutes late with A333 VH-QPH on Good Friday, 15 April 2022.

However QF104, the 1055 hours, was not airborne until 1223. So on Easter Saturday 16 April, arrival in SYD should be 1854 hours, 89 minute slate.

This return flight ('the 104') has been badly late six consecutive times, with the unpunctuality ranging from 74 to 139 minutes. The difficulty is that if it arrives at say 1930, by the time one gets through customs and immigration and gets onself over to the domestic terminal if a connecting passenger, the number of remaining flights to major MEL and BNE airports would be few. So an overnight stay in SYD on the return might be unexpectedly necessary.

After its extremely late arrival in LAX on Thursday, the return working as QF12 of A388 VH-OQK was not very late arriving in SYD on Easter Saturday, 16 August 2022.

However its next tour of duty, the 1015 hours SYD - LAX on Saturday has commenced late with pushback at 1129 hours, hopefully with AFF's pixiechick on board. At this stage arrival is estimated in LAX at 0730 hours, half an hour late.

It seems that flight was the QF7779 an A330. I do wonder when the schedule will be back to some sort of normal.

On Easter Sunday, 17 April 2022, the weekly QF95 (1440 hours MEL - LAX) is expected to depart at 2100 hours mid evening. This flight seems to be formed by a local Sydney to Melbourne domestic flight, so it must be an aircraft that's expected to arrive late in SYD tomorrow morning from overseas.

Why do they keep cancelling QF93, that’s 3 nights in a row. I know they are 1 Dreamliner down but surely you can’t run a business like this!

Probably because it's pretty easy to put people on to either tomorrow's direct or up to Sydney (or Brisbane). Something has to give and there's little doubt that QF93/94 is the easiest rotation of the 787 routes to cancel and re-accommodate passengers.

Painful! I’m flying soon and looks like they will screw me over too! Fine when it’s yourself but when flying with kids makes it very painful!

BNE has a far lower population and number of prospective passengers than MEL, so "if" QFi has BNE - LAX - BNE flights operating, they ought be first to go.

On Easter Sunday, 17 April 2022, QF151 (B738 - yuk - VH-ZXF) was the 0915 hours morning MEL - AKL up up and away at 1004 hours. Arrival should be 48 minutes late at 1538 hours mid afternoon.

I don't believe this was the case yesterday or this morning, but another B789 flight, QF7 (1540 hours mid afternoon SYD - DFW) looks to have been cancelled, possibly at short notice, on Easter Sunday, 17 April 2022. Did the aircraft fail, or were staff suddenly unavailable as a result of being a 'COVID-19 close contact and required to isolate', catching the virus or some other reason?

This long distance flight was also cancelled on 12 and 14 April 2022. Not ideal.

All is not lost, as QF95, the weekly 'extra' MEL - LAX that normally departs at 1440 hours is delayed until 2100 from MEL mid evening, so it's possible if there are spare seats for passengers to fly SYD to MEL to connect in plenty of time, and once in LAX, connect on to a domestic for the journey to their final destination.

These scenarios are like living in hope that a flight may leave, you can’t plan things accordingly and are totally in limbo. I get delays, etc but QF is really not delivering on any of these products at the moment. 4 nights in a row qf 93 cancelled. What certainty does one have that this flight is going to go tomorrow night or the next night or next week?
