Qantas Delays/Cancellations

On Wednesday 13 July, B738 VH-XZC arrived AKL (ex MEL) at 0049 hours, 19 minutes late as QF157.

However the 0600 hours AKL down to MEL QF152 was not airborne until 0830 hours, resulting in gate arrival at 0942 hours, 87 minutes tardy. The plane then formed QF171 (0940 hours midmorning MEL - WLG) in the sky at 1008 for arrival at 1624, 69 minutes behind schedule. Its third flight is the returning QF172 (1605 hours airborne at 1738) meaning suggested MEL at gate time of 1913, a very similar 68 late.

QF1 is delayed out of SIN>LHR. No official word yet on timing.
QF2 is delayed SIN>SYD with mechanical issues, ongoing.
QF72 SIN>PER is delayed due to late arrival of QF71, current ETA 2315.

Third time lucky for Qantas flight trying to get to foggy Mildura

PASSENGERS on a QantasLink flight bound for Mildura had not one, not two, but three attempts to touch down on Wednesday before eventually making their way to the city about nine hours after beginning their pre-flight routine at Melbourne Airport.
Passengers are now encouraged to arrive at major airports two hours ahead of scheduled departure for domestic flights, with those on the 8.25am Mildura-bound QantasLink flight finally touching down in the city after 3pm.
The flight was initially delayed by half an hour before departing Melbourne, but then was greeted by a thick band of fog when it arrived over Mildura about 9.45am and the plane spent the next 30 minutes circling near Cullulleraine before eventually conducting a fly pass of the Mildura Airport at 10,000 feet.
Concluding that the fog was too thick to attempt a landing, the pilot continued on over Swan Hill and eventually touched down right where it started, back at Melbourne Airport, at 11.50am.
As the QantasLink flight was passing over Bendigo, a Regional Express flight from Melbourne to Mildura, which had delayed departure by almost an hour and a half to 9.50am, was also forced to circle over Cullullerine until the fog cleared, landing at Mildura Airport about 11.30am.
The late departure out of Melbourne also forced Rex's 10.35am flight out of Mildura to be delayed until 11.50am.
Meanwhile, after refuelling at Tullamarine, the QantasLink flight took off again close to noon but, before passing over Boort about half way through the journey, a "minor technical issue" that needed to be checked by engineers forced the aircraft to return to Melbourne Airport, yet again, at 12.50pm.
Passengers were expected to be "reaccommodated" on a new aircraft at 1.25pm, but even that plane did not take off until 2.25pm before weary travellers finally made their way to Mildura at 3.22pm.
The Bureau of Meteorology says there is a further chance of fog on both Thursday and Friday mornings.

😂 what an adventure - I hope the food provided was adequate and no one was hungry!

porterbie, many thanks for your 'on the spot' report.

QF1's delay ended up with takeoff from SIN for A388 VH-OQJ at 0103 hours local time on Thursday 14 July, 78 minutes after timetabled pushback, but arrival at its LHR gate at this stage is estimated as 0701, just 26 minutes late.

QF2 on 13 July ex SIN was, as you implied, far worse, with VH-OQD airborne at 2358 hours for SYD 14 July at gate arrival of 0917 hours, 247 minutes late.

A332 VH-EBR on QF72 was in the sky from SIN last night at 2346 hours with PER arrival becoming 0419 hours, 269 minutes behind schedule. It was only recently I remarked that QF71/72 were normally punctual or early.

Continuing with Thursday 14, QF9 (1515 hours MEL-PER-LHR with B789 VH-ZNG) was up up and away at 1557 so at gate PER arrival should be around 1749, 34 minutes behind. On time arrival at LHR remains possible.

A388 VH-OQJ on QF2 arrived LHR at 0724, 49 minutes tardy.

After arriving PER at 1242, 62 minutes behind schedule, B789 VH-ZNJ is winging its way to Melbourne, takeoff having occurred at 1439 for arrival at 1938, a similar 58 late. This aircraft is forming the 2110 hours to LAX (QF93) so it's likely to suffer a small to medium delay.

On Thursday 14 July, QF2 took off from LHR at 2212 hours on on 15 July, SIN at gate arrival should be at around 1802 hours, 37 minutes late.

QF9 yesterday was in PER from 1819 hours (64 minutes late, having lost time after taking off from MEL at 1557, only about 20-23 late) to takeoff at 2023 so on Friday, expected LHR arrival at gate becomes 0542, also 37 minutes tardy.

'The 71' (PER - SIN) has had more unpunctual operation, unusual for it. A333 VH-QPF ran the 14 July version, not becomeing airborne from PER until 1800 hours and arriving SIN at 2310 hours, 350 minutes late. The return QF72 (the 1840 hours) departed at 0022 hours this morning (15 July), arriving PER at 0526 hours, 336 minutes behind schedule.

Domestic punctuality looks to be better on Friday 15 July than on some recent Fridays, but there's still some late running.

QF466 (1630 hours peak time MEL - SYD, B738 VH-VYD) was airborne at 1717 with suggested arrival 1836, 41 minutes tardy.

However if one was by the luck of the draw unfortunate enough to be on the 1600 hours ex MEL, colleague VH-VYC would not have taken off until 1725, so the prediction for at gate arrival becomes 82 late at 1847 hours.

The DRW down to SYD QF841 (class leader VH-EBA of the A332s), the 1310 hours, was in the sky at 1410 so at gate arrival should be around the 1846 hours mark, 56 minutes late.

VH-XZA on QF102 (1535 hours NAN down to SYD airborne at 1557) has had to hold (as with many other flights, including domestics) so arrival looks like 1901, 41 minutes behind. Quite a significant net time loss given takeoff at most was about five minutes late. Adverse winds prior to the hold may have also been a factor.

Continuing with Friday 15 July, QF17, the 2125 hours mid evening SYD - LAX is expected to depart at 2230. This can be nerve wracking for patrons as the more savvy know there's often a chance that the delay stretches, with a worst case outcome of an overnight stay in Sydney town.

QF149, the morning 0740 hours AKL - SYD was badly late, with B738 VH-VZT not airborne until 1806, with consequent arrival at 1933, 713 minutes late.

On Saturday 16 July, A388 VH-OQJ on QF2 arrived SYD at 0602 hours, 52 minutes behind its timetable.

B789 VH-ZNG on QF10 should arrive PER at 1214 hours, 34 minutes late.

QF121 (0930 hours SYD - ZQN) is predicted to push back half an hour late.

The 1540 hours SYD to DFW long flight should depart an hour late on Saturday 16 July.

Maybe partly due to winter weather, TransTasman flights continue to have a lot of late running.

On Saturday 16 July 2022, B738 VH-VZI on QF151 (early morning 0710 hours MEL - AKL) took off at 0825, arriving at 1349, 64 minutes tardy. It returned as QF156, the 1340 hours up up and away at 1508 hours, with expected at gate arrival becoming 1654, 59 late. This was despite the aircraft having overnighted in what is today windy Melbourne, having arrived half an hour late at 2205 last night as QF493 from SYD.

QF9 (1515 hours MEL-PER-LHR) is displaying as delayed until 1540 in initial pushback but that time has passed: it's still invisible on FR24. Winds at MEL were gusting to 57kmh (31nm) at 1530 mid afternoon.

One I missed yesterday (Friday 15 July) was QF7 (B789 VH-ZNE, the 1540 hours SYD - DFW) that was in the sky at 1645, arriving same day at 1659, 59 minutes late.

Today's has VH-ZNH and was airborne at a far later 1837 hours, so its at gate arrival should be around the 1835 hours mark, 155 minutes late. This was because it arrived from LAX this morning in MEL (QF96) at 1134 hours but then did not become airborne on the 1130 hours MEL to SYD QF438 until 1445, arriving at 1551 hours, 176 minutes tardy.

A333 VH-QPA on the 1925 hours early evening SYD - HNL has been showing as likely to depart at 2012, a couple of minutes ago. This delay may mean another late QF104 ex HNL on Saturday morning local time, quite a frequent occurrence.

The HBA up to BNE QF1720 (B717 VH-YQX, the 1340 hours) did not take off until 1859 so expected arrival becomes 2134 hours, 309 minutes behind the schedule.

Sitting at the Gold Coast QF Club waiting for an engineer from Brisbane to come down to OOL and inspect our aircraft nose as there was an issue just as we all boarded and they closed the door. Pilot checked it but it’s QF’s policy to have an engineer to do this. Full flight seated and waiting for 30 min until it was decided to deplane. Revised departure at 11 00 which it’s quite unlikely. Flight QF877 (B738 VH-VXP) OOL- MEL

Also on Sunday 17 July, while the inbound QF9 is only an expected 35 minutes late into LHR at 0540 hours with B789 VH-ZNI, QF10 returning to PER/MEL has been delayed by 185 minutes to 1500 hours (midnight tonight Australian east coast standard time) in predicted pushback. Crew rest requirements?

This 0915 hours flight took off from OOL at 1128 hours with MEL arrival expected at 1338 this afternoon, 118 minutes tardy.

Is this an actual flight with pax? Or just an aircraft repositioning?
