Qantas Delays/Cancellations

Is this an actual flight with pax? Or just an aircraft repositioning?

Agreed it's unusual, but it's displaying on QFd's 'flight status' so it may be a passenger flight. It's a 1400 hours running 135 minutes late with expected ADL departure at 1615. QF2195 operates three or four days a week at the moment.

Also on Sunday 17 July, the first of the morning's, QF670 (0605 hours ADL - MEL) departed at an extremely late 1222 hours (377 minutes tardy), with gate arrival becoming 1406 hours, 366 behind.

QF674 (the 0835 hours) departed at 0918, arriving MEL at 1057, 32 minutes tardy. QF694 (1745 hours ADL - MEL) has been cancelled., so a poor day for this reasonably short domestic route.

Continuing with Sunday 15 July, QF9, the 1515 hours ex MEL didn't take off until 1651. B789 VH-ZNC is suggested as arriving at gate in PER at 1832, 77 minute slate, meaning that the onward sector to LHR may not push back until around 2005, 75 late. However it often picks up time .

News Ltd papers like 'Herald Sun' have an online article suggesting that due to the 100,000 passengers a day cap imposed by Heathrow Airport, QFi has had to change its Tuesday 18 July 2022 departure of QF2 to operate nine hours earlier to SIN than the usual 2105 hours pushback, with travellers being provided accommodation in SIN and then arriving SYD (on Thursday) at the usual (ridiculously early - no thank you!) time of 0510 hours (one of only two flights to enjoy this 'winter curfew breaking arrangement').

The flight will depart instead at 1200 'high noon' arriving at SIN at 0820 on Wednesday 19 then departing as usual at 1930 hours in the early evening.

The article doesn't explain exactly why QFi is making this schedule change, and how it's allegedly affecting one day only. Does Heathrow count passenger numbers for a day from 1201 to 1200 hours rather than what might be expected i.e. 0001 to 2400?

What piece of the puzzle am I missing? (Presently, Heathrow passenger numbers are 122187. I assume this is double country: roughly 60000 arriving passengers and 60000 departing, although on many days there'll be more of one than the other).

How does Heathrow enforce with airlines the former's requirement that 'no further serats to be sold until 11 September'?

Surely some businessmen and leisure travellers will miss a flight that's brought forward nine hours. Will QFi provide these users with overnight London accommodation until QFi can find a seat on QF2 or QF10 in coming days? It's not much notice to change a flight to a significantly earlier time with less than 36 hours' notice.

What happens if some travellers don't know about this (perhaps because they lack a mobile phone, or don't look at it for updates) and front at Heathrow at 1800 hours on Tuesday? No QFi staff/contractors may be at the airport to rearrange the deck chairs.

In line with the above, on Sunday 17 July, QF10 (1155 hours LHR-PER-MEL) was officially delayed by QFi 'three hours' in its LHR departure: it took off at 1601, and should arrive PER on 18 July at 1730, 230 minutes late. MEL arrival will be after 2200 hours.

FR24 claims that the 1310 hours PER - MEL second sector of QF10 is to be cancelled. This may be true, but it isn't reflected in the QF flight sttatus page.

Continuing with Monday 18 July 2022, QF19 (1230 hours SYD - MNL, A333 VH-QPD) took off at 1319 so expected arrival is 1921 hours, 31 minutes tardy.

A388 VH-OQK on QF1 on Monday 18 (the 1555 hours) took off at 1712, so SIN arrival is estimated at 2254 late tonight local time, 39 late.

Tonight's QF93, the 2115 hours MEL - LAX B789 is likely to depart at about 2345, 150 minutes late, as QF10 is delayed, arriving MEL after 2200 hours as noted above. Minimal turnarounds may be good for shareholders and aircraft utilisation but leave less ability to 'catch up' if there's a delayed arrival of a long distance flight.

According to FR24, QF23 (0950 hours SYD to BKK) is usually a good runner but on Wednesday 20, it's to be cancelled. Most unusual.

So is another A333 flight, QF35 from MEL to SIN on Wednesday (usually departs at 1205 hours). Again, rare. Engineers were threatening strike action but AFAIK that hasn't been announced, and usually requires a 'notice period' to comply with IR laws.

Also cancelled on Wednesday 20 is the A332 flight, the 1055 hours BNE up to SIN QF51. What the heck is going on if FR24 is correct?

Notably, however, the QF flight status page doesn't display these cancellations so perhaps it's merely a 'bug' on FR24, or incorrect information transmitted from some other source to FR24. I post them here on the offchance FR24 'knows something'.

On Monday 18 July, A388 VH-OQK that had taken off from SYD as QF1 at 1712 was in SIN from 2312 hours (57 minutes behind schedule) until takeoff at 0138 on Tuesday 19, so expected LHR arrival is 0722, 47 minutes late.

VH-OQJ on QF2 arrived SYD this morning at 0608 hours, 58 minutes tardy.

Also on Monday, the delayed QF10 (B789 VH-ZNI) arrived MEL at 2258 hours, 258 minutes behind the timetable.

VH-ZNC on the MOnday QF10 ex LHR was airborne at 1245 so on Tuesday, at gate PER arrival should be at around 1221 hours, 41 behind.

A332 VH-EBR on QF69 ex ADL and before that MEL arrived DEL last night 45 minutes late at 1845. QF70, a 2005 hours DEL - MEL "express" then took off at 2113 so on Tuesday 19, gate arrival in the Victorian capital should be 1403 hours, 63 minutes behind.

Tuesday 19 July also sees the specially brought forward to 1200 'high noon' LHR pushback of QF2 delayed to an expected 1230 hours.

QF10 for PER and MEL is in contrast only expected to be 20 late in pushing back at 1215 hours local time from LHR.

With what for London is hot weather - 38 degrees at 1200 at Heathrow - there are many flight delays. It was reported yesterday that the tarmac at London Luton partly melted.

The supposedly '1200 high noon' QF2 (A388 VH-OQK) from LHR on Tuesday 19 July did not take off until 1524 on what was for London a very hot day. SIN arrival is estimated on Wednesday 20 as 1108 hours, 168 minutes late on the amended schedule.

QF10 (B789 VH-ZNC) on Tuesday arrived in MEL at its gate at 1910 hours, half an hour tardy.

The 1155 hours QF10 scheduled to depart LHR on Tuesday has been delayed by 32 hours to a new time of 2000 on Wednesday evening (0500 AEST Thursday 21). This must throw the B789 rosters out of kilter, so passengers can expect more delays. The aircraft involved looks to be B789 VH-ZNK that arrived LHR at 0448 hours, 17 early on Tuesday bright and early.

All those flights are operating.

That apparent FR24 error has been corrected. At times, especially when flights of any airline run a day late, FR24 becomes 'confused'. Occasionally, it also shows a turboprop flight as "operating" a different route when one searches for a long distance flight number. Odd.

With the temperature at MEL (Airport) down to minus1.1 at 0700 this morning - marked change from LHR - perhaps no surprise that QF151, the 0710 hours MEL - AKL is expected to depart at 0900 with an A332.

Does MEL have a deicing machine hehe?

As I suggested, QF93 on Wednesday 20 July (the 2110 hours nicely timed mid evening MEL - LAX B789) has been delayed to 1010 hours tomorrow morning (Thursday 21) in expected pushback due to the huge delay adversely affecting QF10 - see above. This means LAX arrival at 0730 on Thursday, not the usual 1830 on Wednesday.

QF94 on Wednesday, usually a 2130 hours LAX back to MEL becomes a 1030 hours (780 minutes late) proposed departure on Thursday 21, arriving at 1900 on Friday, also 13 hours tardy.

Then the Friday 22 departure of QF9 (1515 hours mid afternoon MEL - PER - LHR) is suggested as instead pushing back at 2030 hours, 315 minutes behind schedule. Note how only 90 minutes is allowed for turnaround in Melbourne: this may be insufficient.

Third time lucky for Qantas flight trying to get to foggy Mildura

ALLAN MURPHY JUL 13 2022
wdFKSMpuJ48wD35u8qxW.jpg

PASSENGERS on a QantasLink flight bound for Mildura had not one, not two, but three attempts to touch down on Wednesday before eventually making their way to the city about nine hours after beginning their pre-flight routine at Melbourne Airport.
Passengers are now encouraged to arrive at major airports two hours ahead of scheduled departure for domestic flights, with those on the 8.25am Mildura-bound QantasLink flight finally touching down in the city after 3pm.
The flight was initially delayed by half an hour before departing Melbourne, but then was greeted by a thick band of fog when it arrived over Mildura about 9.45am and the plane spent the next 30 minutes circling near Cullulleraine before eventually conducting a fly pass of the Mildura Airport at 10,000 feet.
Concluding that the fog was too thick to attempt a landing, the pilot continued on over Swan Hill and eventually touched down right where it started, back at Melbourne Airport, at 11.50am.
As the QantasLink flight was passing over Bendigo, a Regional Express flight from Melbourne to Mildura, which had delayed departure by almost an hour and a half to 9.50am, was also forced to circle over Cullullerine until the fog cleared, landing at Mildura Airport about 11.30am.
The late departure out of Melbourne also forced Rex's 10.35am flight out of Mildura to be delayed until 11.50am.
Meanwhile, after refuelling at Tullamarine, the QantasLink flight took off again close to noon but, before passing over Boort about half way through the journey, a "minor technical issue" that needed to be checked by engineers forced the aircraft to return to Melbourne Airport, yet again, at 12.50pm.
Passengers were expected to be "reaccommodated" on a new aircraft at 1.25pm, but even that plane did not take off until 2.25pm before weary travellers finally made their way to Mildura at 3.22pm.
The Bureau of Meteorology says there is a further chance of fog on both Thursday and Friday mornings.
Given a 2hr pre-departure arrival to airport, could probably have driven from Melbourne to Mildura in that time.

Continuing with Wednesday 20, QF1 (1515 hours MEL-PER-LHR) was airborne with B789 VH-ZNI so at gate PER arrival is on the cards for 36 late at 1751 hours. On time arrival in LHR remains possible.

FR24 claims the 1755 hours QF5 from SYD to PER and on to Rome (FCO) has been cancelled, but QF's flight status website page suggests it's merely been delayed out of SYD by an expected 55 minutes. I assume the latter is correct. Not sure why FR24 features incorrect information at times: the feed has to come from somewhere (mind you, things change).

QF5 was wheels up a few moments ago. Not cancelled.

Indeed: it took off at 1929 hours with B789 VH-ZND, so PER arrival looks to be around the 2157 hours mark, 67 minutes behind the timetable. Based on previous recent timings, it may not be very late at all into FCO, provided it doesn't massively extend its Perth time on the ground.

QF5, the PER - FCO on WEdnesday 20 July took off at 2355 so expected Thursday 21 arrival becomes 0915, half an hour late.

On Thursday 21, QF9, the 1515 hours MEL-PER-LHR is expected to start its long jo0urney two hours late at 1715.

At a chilly MEL, A332 VH-EBM on QF69 (0815 hours MEL-ADL-DEL) was initially airborne at 0933 hours., so it should be delayed into the Indian capital.

Earlier, B738 VH-VZX on QF151 (0710 early morning MEL - AKL) did not take off until 0850 hours (probably had to wait for ice on the plane to melt?) so arrival should be at 1404 hours, 79 minutes late.

On Wednesday 21, despite QF103 being less than 20 minutes late arriving at HNL, QF104 (the 1055 hours) did not take off until 1146 so on Thursday 22, mooted SYD arrival for A333 VH-QPC should be at 1800 hours, 35 late.

This flight eventually left at 21:27 BST as QF7010, so just under 33½ hours late. It is fortunate that its new arrival slots into the lightest day for 789 operations - normally 12 sectors (versus 17 on Monday, Friday & Saturday)

Thanks. Information only a 'nerd' would know!

So this scheduled Tuesday 19 July flight ex LHR should be in PER tonight (21 July) from 2020 to 2150, arriving MEL at 0320 hours on Friday 22, 1960 minutes late.

The overnight delayed QF93 had been changed to depart MEL today (Thursday 21) at 1010 hours but ended up taking off at 1120 with B789 VH-VNJ likely to arrive at 0743 hours, 793 minutes tardy. The Wednesday 20 QF94 remains delayed by an expected 13 hours in its pushback to 1030 on Thursday (today) from LAX.

B789 VH-ZNA on the Wednesday 20 QF10 (1155 hours ex LHR) was in the sky at 1311 so PER arrival was at 1233 hours today, 53 late.

QF69 (see above) continues to run late, with arrival tonight in DEL expected at 1855, 55 minutes delayed.

Continuing with Thursday 21, QF9 is delayed more than indicated, with the B789 likely to shortly push back at 1800 hours, 165 minutes behind the timetable. If that occurs, it may be (with snappy work on the ground at PER) arriving LHR about 0705 local time tomorrow, 120 late. (Let's see how wrong the prediction).

VH-ZNA on opposite number 'the 10' should arrive MEL tonight at 1941, 61 behind.

QF104 was predicted to be 35 late arriving SYD late this afternoon but was only one minute late.

B789 VH-ZND took off from PER last night as QF5 at 2355 so today, arrival at FCO was 0931 hours, 46 minutes tardy. Since recent inception, this thrice weekly has had a generally excellent timekeeping record, in marked contrast to many other QFi B789 flights.

Yesterday, QF35 had A333 VH-QPB for the second consecutive day, arriving SIN (ex MEL) at 1858 hours, 43 late. Today it was VH-QPE, taking off at 1750 with suggested arrival 2313 hours, 38 late. (A different schedule today: 1625 pushback, not 1205).
