Qantas Delays/Cancellations

For a flight that pre-January 2020 mostly was on time, and often up to an hour or so early into Japan, QF25 (currently the 2020 hours redeye SYD up to HND) has poor punctuality.

On 23 April it arrived 69 minutes late. On 25, the tardiness was 64 minutes. On 27's morning, with an A332 operating rather than the usual A333, it was 36 late arriving at its gate. On Friday 28 (today), it arrived with A333 VH-QPG at 0620 hours, 55 behind.

This flight once had a B744 IIRC so seating capacity has been dramatically reduced, which should in theory reduce the time spent boarding and alighting. It also means less luggage and freight/mail to handle.

Pre 2020 the flight was operated by a 747 which often sat on the ground in SYD for most of the day. Now its an A330 that is usually operating on DOM or inbound from HNL directly prior to QF25.

QF1 continues with its odd performance where it often arrives (ex SYD) in SIN ahead of time, but then departs SIN late and arrives LHR similarly late. Very unreliable, and unlike competitors from all points of Asia and the Middle East that pretty much routinely arruve LHR at or very close to time unless there's some extraneous event such as significant airways congestion or fog.

On 27 April 2023, A388 VH-OQJ arrived LHR at 0728 hours, 53 minutes late.

On 28 April, it was VH-OQK's turn, arriving 37 late at 0712 hours.

On 29 April, OQB arrived LHR's gate at 0840, 125 late.

Today UK time, VH-OQG is likely to arruve at 0731, 56 minutes behind the timetable.

OQK arrived this morning in SYD as QF2 at 0553, 43 behind.

The PER-LHR QF9 arrived at 0907 hours, 242 minutes late on Saturday 29 April with B789 VH-ZND.

I think on those days it was probably waiting for connecting pax from MEL on the late-running QF37.

hi! my first post 🙂 is QF12 generally unreliable from LAX-SYD? scheduled arrival 7:45am, I don't have a connection but I need to be somewhere by 9:45am (1/2h from airport) and based on current history of it I don't feel so confident, and not even close to the reliability of DL/UA : /

As a result QF11 on 30/4 is delayed 9 hours to 7.35pm departure awaiting inbound OQJ.

It's not going to depart at that time on Sunday 30 April. The aircraft should be at its SYD gate at 1906 hours (801 minutes late) as QF12 ex LAX, so QF11 is most unlikely to push back prior to 2045 hours mid evening, and even that would be a fast turnaround for an A388.

Have a look at FR24: in the last seven days, QF12 has been officially late (more than 15 minutes tardy arriving at gate) four times, which isn't impressive.

You also have to potentially battle the line for customs at what is normally a busy time of day for international arrivals in SYD (and MEL). This won't take 20 seconds.

Looks like OQH is taking the QF11 after 6 days in maintenance.

Indeed: it took off at 1952 hours, with suggested LAX arrival becoming same day at 1826 hours, 681 minutes late. It had been in Sydney all day after arriving as QF128 from HKG at 0737 hours, 52 behind.

Colleague VH-OQL, more often seen on QF127/128 SYD-HKG and return, is on the delayed QF12 that should arrive ex LAX in SYD on Monday 1 May at 0905 hours, 80 minutes behind schedule.

I don't know whether it's due to a shortage of A388s, or lower loadings in May, but the SYD-HKGs seem to have been reduced to an A333 for four days next week. Perhaps this is the 'new normal'.

I remembered seeing somewhere they will cut back A380 in May but I can’t seem to find it anymore

The delivery flight QF6040 PAE-MEL of the latest B789 VH-ZNL was scheduled to commence at 16:30 PST Friday, but was delayed 27 hours 7 minutes for a 19:37 PST departure on Saturday. It touched down in Melbourne at 08:46 AEST this morning 27 hours 16 minutes after the scheduled 05:30 AEST Sunday. The 20+ hour Sunrise test flight time was achieved by flying well into the Bight towards Perth after reaching the NSW coast, before returning to Melbourne.

Monday’s QF12 is delayed overnight. OQD appears to be unserviceable. Looks like Tuesday’s QF11 will immediately turn around to operate the delayed QF12.

QF12's nominally showing as 1030 hours ex LAX on Tuesday 2 May 2023, which in theory gives the A388 205 minutes for a turnaround, hopefully sufficient to punctually push back.

QF683 MEL-ADL delayed by an hour so far as they offload some bags for no show pax.

This had B738 VH-VZE that earlier on Tuesday 2 May 2023 had arrived from SYD as QF423 in MEL at 1044 hours, nine minutes late. The 1215 hours MEL-ADL '683' was airborne at 1333 for gate arrival at 1420 hours, 75 minutes tardy.

Granted, it must be a pain to drag checked bags one by one from the hold and search their tags, but with so many bringing the proverbial kitchen sink on board as carry-on luggage, one would have thought this should take at maximum 40 minutes, if not quicker. Of course 'correct' bags have to be manually reloaded on a B738.

Also on Tuesday 2, QF69 (A332 VH-EBP, the 0925 hours midmorning MEL-DEL) was in the sky at 1028 with gate arrival suggested as 1842 hours, 62 minutes behind. Inevitably, redeye QF70, the 1935 hours will be tardy but as today, when yesterday's QF69 was 63 late arriving in DEL, it may be able to pick up time and arrive MEL less than half an hour late tomorrow arvo.

Earlier this morning, A388 VH-OQH on 'the 12' from LAX arrived Sydney at 0835 hours, 50 minutes tardy.

QF128 with its stalwart A388 (VH-OQL) was similar - exactly an hour earlier, and also 50 late pulling in to its international terminal gate in SYD, ex HKG.

OQK is on 'the 2' from LHR overnight down to SIN with arrival expected at about 1819 hours, 49 behind, meaning on time arrival in Sydney tomorrow morning at 0510 hours is unlikely.

This afternoon's 1505 hours MEL-PER QF9 domestic leg is predicted to depart Tullamarine at 1600 hours, meaning a likely delay to the onwards Perth to London Heathrow far longer leg. I haven't kept up with it, but QFi appears to have reverted to operating the B789 all the way on weekdays as well as weekends, unlike recently on weekdays when passengers had to change in PER to/from an A332 or B738, typically.

Class leader VH-QPA on the frequently late QF104 from HNL down to SYD is living up to its reputation with arrival tonight suggested as 1928 hours, 48 minutes behind the timetable.

Another day another QF12 delay from LAX-SYD, been keeping an eye on it. Found an AA biz reward availability on the date I needed to fly back, paid the 5000 point change fee and switched from QF. As much as it's nice to represent the Aussie flag carrier, but not when arriving on time is like a coin toss.

QF9 (B789 VH-ZND) was away from Melbourne at 16:02 AEDT, 57 minutes late and subsequently away from Perth at 19:37 AWST, 52 minutes late. The revised ETA into Heathrow is 5:45 BST, 40 minutes late.
A considerable improvement on the last delay for this flight (coincidently with the same aircraft) as reported by Melburnian1 on 30th : 3+ hours.
