Qantas Delays/Cancellations

Continuing with Wednesday 5 July, the 3 July QF74 (2225 hours SFO down to SYD, B789 VH-ZNM) took off on time at 2249, but diverted to NAN, from where takeoff this morning was at 0609 hours after a stop from 0430 to 0546. Arrival should be at 0840 hours, 80 minutes late. Was this a famous Quckstatus 'splash and dash' due to adverse winds requiring a fuel top-up or a medical diversion?

QF5 from PER to FCO (ZNB) arrived yesterday at 0946 hours, 56 late with the return QF^ 9timetabled to leave at 1050 hours) airborne at 1205 for a projected PER arrival time at gate of 0917 hours, 47 behind. This makes the chances of arriving in SYD on time unlikely.

In more on 5 July, QF11 (1020 hours morning SYD-LAX, A388 VH-OQL) was airborne at 1153 hours with suggested gate arrival becoming 32 minute late at 0737 hours, same day.

The 1200 'high noon' QF35 (MEL-SIN) is delayed to an expected 1330 hours pushback, the fourth time in five days it's suffered(ing) a substantial delay.

A333 VH-QPE on QF81 (1150 hours late morning SYD-SIN) was in the sky at 1231 hours, so gate arrival should be half an hour past schedule, at 1845.

Flow forward operating all day MEL-SYD (not sure about other routes), varying delays (from nil to notable).

Unclear why ? wind (although the 16/34s seemed to be in operation) or maybe it’s crew / recovery from previous days.

The badly delayed QF9 (B789 VH-ZNH) arrived LHR on Wednesday 5 July at 1146 hours, 401 minutes late. At one stage during the journey, FR24 was estimating gate arrival at 1125, but this didn't turn out to be accurate. The aircraft then formed QF10, the 1155 hours scheduled ex LHR that took off at 1410 hours. PER arrival today (Thursday 6) is estimated as 1342 hours, 122 minutes behind the timetable.

A388 VH-OQG arrived (ex LAX) in SYD this morning 35 minutes late at 0820 hours.

While it doesn't always 'form its own', QF35 yesterday (A332 VH-EBM) from MEL to SIN arrived at its gate at 2048 hours (168 minutes behind schedule) and did form 'the 36', which was the 2015 hours airborne at 2236. Gate arrival in MEL this morning should be at around 0720 hours, an even 100 late.

A332 VH-EBB on QF40 from CGK down to MEL pulled in to its gate this morning at 0759 hours, 79 late.

The Wednesday 5 1200 'high noon' HNL-SYD QF104 was suggested as departing at 1230 hours but it's already 1239 up there.

QF87 will be departing ~30min late this morning due “waiting for a catering cart with economy class snacks for the flight”, although an on time arrival expected due shorter flight time than schedule.

Apparently there's some problem with passport-validating software operated by the Australian Border Force, media briefly reported about half an hour ago. It's allegedly leading to some delays in international departures.

This news is reported on 3AW in Melbourne earlier this morning

With ZNH now on ground in Perth having arrived 93 minutes late, I note that once QF10 eventually arrives in Melbourne, the flow-on flight QF93, is now showing a 90 minute delay.

'The 10' arrived PER on Thursday 6 July at 1318 hours, 98 minutes tardy. The 1310 hours PER-MEL second sector took off at 1523; arrival at gate in Melbourne should shortly occur at approximately 2029 hours, 109 late.

The 2025 hours MEL-LAX QF93 remains showing as a proposed 2155 hours departure: optimistic.

Earlier today QF63 (0940 hours SYD-JNB) did not get away until 1100 in the air, so expected gate arrival becomes 1713 hours, 63 minutes behind.

Just a bit optimistic - QF93 (B789 VH-ZNH) pushed back at 22:07, so 102 minutes late, and took off promptly 12 minutes later. Revised arrival into LAX now 19:07 PST, 82 minutes late.

On Thursday 6 July 2023, A333 VH-QPC on the 0950 hours midmorning QF23 from SYD to BKK arrived at its allocated gate at 1645 hours, five minutes late. However the return QF24 (the 1810 hours) was not airborne until 2258, so on Friday 7, predicted at gate SYD arrival becomes 1032 hours, 247 minutes late.

VH-QPB (A333) on the Thursday mid evening 2020 hours SYD-HND (QF25) was in the sky at 2158 so on Friday it arrived 63 late at 0628 hours.

QF35, the Friday 1200 'high noon' from MEL to SIN is forecast to push back an hour behind schedule.

B789 VH-ZNJ on yesterday's QF10 took off from London Heathrow at 1235 with Friday arrival in PER suggested as half an hour behind at 1210 hours.

QF6015 may be an empty working from MEL to SYD - A332 VH-EBA took off at 0757 hours.

Continuing with Friday 7 July 2023, by 1319 AEST SYD looked to be on single runway operations.

Because it's off peak, delays shouldn't be as bad as if it's still the case at say 1700 this afternoon.

QF2202 (showing on FR24 as 'QF22D'), the 1135 hours SYD-ARM has Q400 VH-QOH. It was airborne at 1319 for suggested arrival at 1406 hours, 71 minutes late.

The 1215 hours SYD-MNL (QF19, A333 VH-QPG) was still queuing for takeoff as at 1322 hours, so should be at least half an hour late arriving at gate.

SYD has enacted single runway ops due to weather.

This was also the case yesterday for much if not all, of the day and perhaps evening, but being Saturday, it didn't seem to result in any significant delays so I refrained from mentioning.

One example this morning is QF645 (A332 VH-EBO, the 1025 hours across to PER) that at 1117 hours was from what one can see on the map still second in a long queue for takeoff. It's likely to be at least 35 minutes late arriving at its PER gate.

QF11 (A388 VH-OQD, 1020 hours SYD-LAX) is however an exception, using the normal north-south runway. It took off at 1139 hours, but with favourable winds is predicted to arrive at 0722 same day, only 17 late. An hour later however, SQ232 (also an A388) used the east-west runway along with almost all other aircraft so far today.

As Sunday afternoons are busier, delays can be expected to compound unless the airport reverts to use of two runways.

SYD remains on single runway operations as at 1741 hours on Sunday 9 July. B738 VH-XZI, the 1420 hours ADL to SYD took off at 1525 and is about to arrive at 1746 hours, 66 minutes late.

Earlier, A333 VH-QPE on the lunchtime 1215 hours SYD-MNL was in the sky at 1401 with suggested arrival at 1955, 65 late.

QPJ on the 1150 hours SYD-SIN (QF81) is worse, having taken off at 1351 for forecast gate arrival in the Lion City at around 2008 hours tonight, 113 late. The 2030 hours QF82 (SIN down to SYD) is suggested as pushing back at 2115 hours, 45 behind.

'The 103' from SYD to HNL due out at 2040 hours is predicted to change to a 2125 hours pushback.

Perhaps due to the single runway ops in Sydney and consequently late domestic connections from airports such as Hobart, QF9, the Sunday 9 July 1505 hours mid afternoon MEL-PER-LHR took off at 1717, with Perth arrival suggested as 1902 hours, 107 late. London arrival is highly likely to be after 0630 hours local time tomorrow.

Despite normal operations at Sydney having resumed either very late on Sunday 9 July 2023 or early in the evening, delays have been inevitable.

QF842, the 2040 hours SYD-DRW has just become airborne at 2155 hours with B738 VH-VXR, so will be at least 50 minutes late arriving at its gate. Scheduled arrival in Darwin is 0045 on Monday 10. If the return flight is delayed, given it often forms the 0800 hours SYd-MEL, that can then suffer delays unless QFd can arrange an aircraft swap.

QF25 (2020 hours SYD-HND) took off just ahead of 'the 842'.

While Sunday mornings QF63 SYD-JNB was only delayed 22 minutes for a 09:57 AEST pushback, it didn't take off until 10:40 due to the single runway issue, thus 65 minutes late, and consequently was 87 minutes late into Jo'burg.
The return flight operating as QF314 rather than QF64, was 76 minutes late departing, but with those winds now becoming tail winds, is expected into Sydney at 13:34 AEDT Monday p.m. just 9 minutes late.
