Qantas Delays/Cancellations

Hope they recover quickly

That is a long stint for all the passengers.. Assuming they stay on board in MEL, will be about 24 hours in the seat if they land in JNB at the new scheduled time!

QF63 has turned back to MEL about 4 hours after departing SYD

Edit: QF flight status has it arriving in MEL at 1730 and departing again at 1930, could be medical diversion?
Crew would be out of hours.. no QF21 tonight so could be using that crew.

I'd say its the opposite. They just can't throw enough money to be able to keep them flying. (Key word enough). I'd hazard a guess that the cost to expedite the 380s at AUH are astronomical.

Every major delay/cancellation is an actual big cost to QF (unless the plane is very empty).

Given the pitiful amount QF spend on delayed pax, which is something like $200/group and will fight you all the way to a tribunal date based on multiple AFF threads if your costs are higher. The cynic in me says that an exec has done the maths and worked out that it's the lower cost option and that they'll get a bigger bonus

or, they got a consultant in to do it for them 😜

Our Wednesday QF22 has been delayed overnight due to a very delayed inbound 🙄 fortunately we had enough warning to sort out our own hotel which is suitable for the four of us.

QF4 being diverted to Nadi. Looks like far out, isn’t there anything closer that can handle a B787 assuming it‘a a bit of an emergency. Or is AKL closee?

Heard it was a planned diversion due to predicted fog in AKL.
Interesting.

Does it then wait in Fiji for weather in AKL to improve and then continue to AKL?
Or will they refuel in NAN and then go straight onto Sydney instead?

Looks like Hawaii would have been closer for them if it was an emergency.

It’s only showing it’ll be on the ground in Nadi for 45 minutes.. QF4.. the one to watch if it is fog, and nothing else is diverting at this stage, is the QR921. It’s 4 hours 40 late and due at 7:25.

As of 0330am local Nadi time, it seems to indeed line up and getting ready to fly to AKL (rather than SYD direct) with an expected landing at 0645am AKL time. Bit of a weird one.

Perhaps given flight distance and loadings, QF4 was unable to carry enough holding / diversion fuel for nonstop arrival into AKL (given weather there) so the NAN stop was a tech stop more than anything.

@jb747 might be able to guesstimate the rationale.

At times flights have diverted to CHC when AKL is closed. Flights from LAX-SFO. But does not happen often

Today QF612 MEL-BNE (B738 VH-VZY) was delayed due to earlier flight being diverted back to Brisbane due to mechanical issue and aircraft swap. Arrival at 15 38, so 163 min tardy.

QF4 again dropping into NADI.

Meanwhile Sunday’s QF10 is a day late.

And Monday’s QF10 is also a day late leaving Tuesday 23/7

Sitting on QF432 fully loaded and ready to go. Captain just came on and said SYD closed one runway due to winds so there'll be delays. Probably start to see red come across the board for domestic airlines involving Sydney now.
