Qantas Delays/Cancellations

QF22 is cancelled tonight. Wonder what the issue is given that they cancelled it at the very least while QF21 was in the air if not earlier.
QF7 SYD - Dallas was cancelled yesterday, so they don’t have an airframe there to operate the return QF8 Dallas - SYD which was airborne 45 mins ago using the QF21 frame (VH-ZNJ). Now there is no airframe for QF22…

Anyone know why QF46 DPS-MEL was diverted to Canberra? Aircraft was about to start final approach into MEL but suddenly turned around and flew to CBR.

On QF483 SYD-MEL. Boarded by one set of cabin crew but they were not the cabin crew coming to MEL. Captain indicated we were waiting for a very delayed crew from Adelaide (3 hours) who had just landed. Will add the Captain was amusing and it was very well judged to stand up front and give direct info to passengers. Crew arrived slightly late and looking very harrassed but passengers will now know to give them a break.

As a bonus I have a shadow next to me which is karma after sitting in a middle seat next to a leg-spreading armrest hog on the way up from MEL.

Just heard on the radio that there was an issue with the runway lights at MEL yesterday morning @RSVKanga and @Flyerqf many flights were diverted until the malfunction was remedied.

With the fact that Tullamarine have finally buckled and agreed to an above ground rail station, there's a dark little part of me that hopes their arm was twisted off the back of the lights going out. (I mean, frankly, from the state of the terminal buildings inside, I'm surprised any of the lights are still on, but...)

Yesterday's QF1 returned to Singapore shortly after takeoff and cancelled.
The return QF2 from LHR is therefore also cancelled today as the aircraft is assumedly still in Singapore.

At what point -- will there even be one?? -- do these delays start having a material effect on bookings?

I've just booked two important trips in the coming weeks on other carriers (one for work, one for leisure; both in J) where I would have otherwise booked QF because of concerns with QF's international reliability.

I leave for overseas in a few days time and already have my contingency flights ready to feed to the QF phone person. Sad and not a relaxing start to the holidays
.

QF63 has turned back to MEL about 4 hours after departing SYD

Edit: QF flight status has it arriving in MEL at 1730 and departing again at 1930, could be medical diversion?
If it's medical, wouldn't Tasmania be closer?

QF21 currently showing a 6.5 hour delay. Given all the A380 and 787 delays and cancellations it gives the impression that QF maintenance have had their budget cut 🙄
I'd say its the opposite. They just can't throw enough money to be able to keep them flying. (Key word enough). I'd hazard a guess that the cost to expedite the 380s at AUH are astronomical.

Every major delay/cancellation is an actual big cost to QF (unless the plane is very empty).

Some very rough google mapping:

At point they turned around (according to FR24) it was ~2,200km to HBA and ~2,500km to MEL, so ~20minutes flying

Yeah not sure how that adds in to the calculus when it is going to be ~4hrs back either way

Can Hobart's runway handle a 789? I thought that's what the upcoming runway works were designed to sort out.

Google tells me its just long enough.. Not sure I trust that though..

No doubt that MEL would be preferred if feasible, crew is surely timed out after this (for the ongoing trip to JNB)

QF63 is a medical diversion. MEL makes sense as it is a base and they have called out crew in MEL to operate it to prevent further disrupt.

It was obviously serious enough to divert but allowing the extra flying to MEL.
Let's just hope all souls that boarded are still there to depart.
