Qantas Delays/Cancellations

Today’s QF5 from SYD has been delayed from 1830 to 2020 - at this stage!
Hope it doesn't delay or stuff up the rest of your trip. Have a great time. It was good to catch up in Melbourne.

OQJ is today’s spare (in SYD) now that OQG is back in service. OQJ (or the inbound OQA from LAX or OQH from SIN) will position down to MEL to operate tomorrow’s QF93.

A very expensive way to operate this flight, but way better than cancelling.

Given that a maximum of 236 seats will presumably have been sold, there should be plenty of room to spread out, especially if a passenger was booked in economy.

Isn't QF5 a scheduled 1920 hours departure from Sydney, not '1830'?

One wonders how well any carrier's international aircraft are cleaned when there's pressure to achieve say a 90 minute turnaround from 'blocks on' to 'off', as pesky passengers take 15 minutes to alight, and boarding commences many minutes prior to pushback. Other sites claim aircraft are ideal breeding grounds for bacteria, and that it's best to bring wipes to give one's tray table loving care. (Hypocritically, I never do)

On Saturday 31, QF5 departed SYD at 2027 hours. Being a quiet Saturday night, it was airborne for PER (and FCO) at 2041 hours., about an hour late.

The aircraft is B789 VH-ZND that had arrived from SCL as QF28 at 1812 hours, 12 minutes tardy, so my now deleted previous comment about it being formed by the QF6 arrival was incorrect. Apologies.

Saturday 31 August's QF5 (B789 VH-ZND) took off from PER at 0132 hours on Sunday 1 September, so arrival should be about 1109 hours, 69 behind, in FCO.

OQJ has just departed SYD as QF6100.

Given the A388 won't be at the gate in MEL until about 1118 hours - 75 late on its scheduled empty working - QFi's estimate of a 1235 hours departure for QF93 from MEL to LAX seems optimistic.

It took about four and a half hours from QF2 arriving at its gate in SYD at 0512 hours this morning to pushback at c.0945 hours as QF6100 for VH-OQJ.

QF291, the Finnair-operated SYD-SIN for QFi is estimated to depart 50 minutes late at 1115 hours.

QF27, the 1130 hours SYD-SCL B789 is estimated to depart two hours late at 1330 this afternoon.

in MEL, A388 VH-OQJ landed at 1125 so it should be at its gate at about 1130 for the 1155 hours MEL-LAX QF93.

A guess is it'll depart after 1330 hours, not '1235' as QF is still asserting.

OQJ didn’t operate the inbound QF2, that was OQH. OQJ was on the ground overnight.

Thank you Flyerqf. This makes it even less excusable that it's late. Is the difficulty (i.e. as to why it ran late) finding an available flight crew, or something to do with the aircraft?

Separately, QF137 (1020 hours midmorning SYD-CHC, B738 VH-XZB) was airborne at 1126 with a 1608 hours arrival at gate expected, 43 minutes tardy.

QF291, the Sunday 1 September 1025 hours SYD-SIN (A333 OH-LTS) took off at 1213 hours, much later than its presumed amended pushback time of 1115 above, so arrival is estimated at gate at 1815 early this evening, 85 minutes tardy.

QF93 (A388 VH-OQJ) took off at 1357 from MEL with its arrival at LAX suggested as 1036 hours same day, 86 minutes late.

QF35 4:15 late . Left 5 minutes ahead of QF37.

QF35 from MEL to SIN has A332 VH-EBS that is expected to arrive at its SIN gate on Sunday 1 September at 2159 hours, 224 minutes late.

It appears this aircraft will form QF52, the 2030 hours mid evening SIN down to BNE altered to depart at a predicted 2320 hours. If so it should be more than two hours late arriving in BNE on Monday 2.

Thanks for the QF35 update @Melburnian1
Assuming tomorrow's QF 35 will be from QF38, at this stage no inkling of delay in your considered opinion?
From looking at MEL (airport site) arrivals and departures, it appears that on Monday 2 September, QF38 is arriving at gate 9 but QF35 (the 1200 'high noon' MEL-SIN) is departing from gate 7.

QF80, an A333, is (at this stage) arriving at gate 7 (ex NRT in Japan) at 0745 hours so that "may" be forming QF35 as the latter is also an A333. I can't see any other QFi departure using gate 7 in the morning.

A333 VH-QPC is currently running QF79, estimated to arrive NRT's gate at about 1906 hours, only six minutes late so hopefully nothing goes wrong and it arrives back in MEL tomorrow morning on or close to time.

As you will be acutely aware, on occasion aircraft swaps can occur, especially (but not limited to) due to one becoming defective but at this early stage I'll stick my neck out and say you have a very good chance of being OK. Perhaps you have a tight connection in SIN?

Thanks for that information @Melburnian1
Our connecting flight is 2015 QF3498. Bangkok Airways only has 2 flights to USM and we are on the later flight.

As is my usual practice, hotel first night booking is fully refundable until 6pm.
As long as we are no longer than 60 or so minutes, we should be good.
