Qantas Delays/Cancellations

Tuesday evening's QF94 LAX-MEL after being delayed 22+ hours, has now been cancelled. It should have been operated by B789 VH-ZNA, which arrived early with QF93, earlier on Tuesday.

Edit : this begs the question what happens with Thursday's QF9 ? Will QF10 turn around in Perth ? or will the only other B789 currently in Melbourne, newbie ZNM commence revenue service?

In its second consecutive overnight of unpunctuality, QF20 from MNL to SYD (A333 VH-QPF) arrived on Thursday 8 June at 0751 hours, 71 minutes late.

Last night, B738 VH-VZW on QF139 (1855 dinnertime SYD-CHC) was again delayed, arriving this morning at 0037 hours, 38 late.

VH-QPG is 'the horse' for the 0930 hours SYD-ICN (a route that passenger wise one AFFer has suggested is performly poorly for QFi) and is expected to push back 40 minutes late.

Given it was about two hours late yesterday departing Sydney, QF1 is predicted to arrive London Heathrow local time at about 0809 hours, 94 minutes late. A388 VH-OQG is the aircraft.
 
QFi is often unreliable on this offering
QF93 vs UA 99 since March - both two cancellations
QF93 is showing as 67% early and 9% on time, UA99 is showing 48% early and 20% on time (which is 68%, so still lower than QF at 76%)

QF11 vs UA 842 since March - 5 cancellations for UA and none for QF (although one appears due to a diversion so willing to make that 4)

No doubt OTP might be one thing, but to suggest QF is cancelling flights on a regular basis is just wrong. 2 over a few months is not that extreme.

I know you hate QF, but why don't we make this thread more useful for people that may actually be affected by delays, rather than the constant bashing. The stats don't even support your argument. We get it. It's not always great. But this could be a really helpful thread if it wasn't for the unnesscary commentary all the time.

I admire you for sticking up for your employer, but if you perceive 'it's just me' who criticises QFi, read 'The Age', 'SMH', 'Herald Sun', 'Daily Telegraph' and so on. A casual look at other 'AFF' threads (and competing websites) would provide further support, and that's before glancing at Google or TripAdvisor reviews.

It'd be preferable to have a longer time period to compare performance than just two months.

I referred to 'USA' routes and wasn't confining it to SYD or MEL to LAX.

So let's look at SYD to HNL and its return route:

'On time' from 1 April to 31 May 2023, which I assume is 'arrival time', is said to be 53 per cent for QF103. 'Excessively late' which I can't see as defined but may be above an hour late, is 19 per cent. There weren't any cancellations.

HA452 is the competitor. 'On time' is 65 per cent, not great but better than QF103. 'Excessively late' was only two of the 48 flights surveyed, with no cancellations.

In the other direction, QF104 was not 'on time' or just 'late' once in the survey period. Of 42 flights, 17pc were 'very late' and 83pc 'excessively late'. As I've remarked a few times, it'd be interesting to know why the turnaround seems to almost constantly lose time at Honolulu.

Compare this to HA451: 'on time' has been 53pc, 'late' 24pc, 'very late' 10pc and 'excessively late' 12pc. Again, not A1, but way above the competitor, QFi.

So on this route, QFi southbound has an unfavourable variance in 'excessively late' arrival in Sydney of a staggering 71pc compared to Hawaiian Airlines.

A shocking performance by QFi.

It'd be useful if you let us know why there are so many delays up there. When the (typically) A333 aircraft does a 'yo-yo', up to three consecutive QF103-104 trips, it is able to turn around in Sydney pretty efficiently, but at the other end, a different story.

One can't compare SYD-SFO yet as insufficient data from the QF73 (re)commencement, and nor can one compare SYD/MEL to DFW as IIRC there isn't a competitor offering a nonstop.

But it's good that some are loyal to their employer, as after all, the company puts food and more on the table.

I do however believe that given QF has received so much help from governments (not just the Feds), prospective and longstanding users alike deserve to know how it performs.

The media in recent months has been paying more attention to this: previously, quite a few outlets rarely if ever seemed interested.

JQ's management, for one, has had to admit it needs to do better. QF management seems to have an extremely thin skin when it comes to criticism, and this may percolate downwards.
 
On Thursday 8 June 2023, QF104 from HNL arrived in SYD with A333 VH-QPA at 1923 hours, 43 minutes late. This delayed QF25 (2020 hours mid evening redeye SYD-HND) to pushback of 2107 hours, with as at 2131 QF25 waiting behind EK413 (an A388) in the takeoff queue. QF suggests HND at gate arrival at 0610 hours, 45 behind.

For those who don't read this thread backwards, the always helpful and succinct Flyerqf has said that these QF104 to QF25 delays will be reduced from the late October northern winter timetable change, as 'the 25' becomes a B789, apparently.
 
Tuesday's B789 Dallas departures QF22 & QF8 are both running late. As there is too much discrepancy on the tracking sites on the actual departure delays, I'll just report the arrival delays.

Thus QF22 is now due in Melbourne at 06:05 AEST Friday, 40 minutes late, and QF8 is now due in Sydney at 06:36 AEST Friday, 21 minutes late, both flights being projected to make up time in flight.
 
A333 VH-QPG as QF88 from ICN down to SYD is arriving at 0924 hours on Friday 9 June, 49 late.

VH-ZNB (B789) was on QF22 from DFW down to MEL, arriving this morning bright, but not early, at 0559 hours, 34 minutes behind the schedule.

The BKK-SYD redeye QF24 was similar, with A333 VH-QPF33 minutes tardy in its gate arrival at 0658 hours.

As previously discussed, the domestic MEL to PER initial sector of QF9 on Thursday 8 became an A332 in the shape of VH-EBB, arriving at gate at 1729 hours, 14 minutes late. However the second LHR-bound operation sees B789 VH-ZNJ likely to arrive at 0544, 39 down.

The BOM isn't suggesting there was fog in Canberra this morning, but QF1420, the first of the morning as an 0600 hours pushback did not take off until 0734, and is about to arrive in SYD at 0726 hours, 91 minutes late with Q400 VH-QOD.

True, however in the case of the QF22 mentioned, one site had 90 minutes delay, others had between 15 & 30 minutes delay.

Meanwhile this (Friday) morning, QF21 MEL-DFW (B789 VH-ZNH) was 39 minutes late pushing back in Melbourne, however it is currently shown as making up all that delay into Dallas.
 
It's actually Fort Worth.
The terminals and the 3 western runways are, yes, in Fort Worth. The 4 eastern runways are in Dallas.

FR is closer to the correct time though I think it was actually even later than the 2220 reported. I was watching FR and listening to ATC due to the crazy WX. They were pushing the tower hard for an earlier clearance -- unsure if it was crew time or fuel related.
 
Also on Saturday 10 June 2023, QF67, the 0905 hours SYD-BLR (A332 VH-EBN) was in the sky at 1000 hours with arrival at 1719 hours, 59 late, the likely outcome. QF68 back will be delayed.

B738 VH-VZV on the 0835 hours SYD-NAN QF101 pointed skywards at 0934 hours, arriving 35 late at 1510 hours.

QF104 (A333 VH-QPE) is expected into SYD (at gate) tonight at 1919 hours, 39 behind.
 
Saturday's QF10 PER-MEL sector is delayed 5 hrs 35 minutes ( and still showing as a B789), with VH-ZNJ now showing as turning around in Perth to operate Saturday's QF9 PER-LHR.
Meanwhile VH-ZNC is operating the Saturday QF9 MEL-PER sector, and thus will presumably turn around to take the delayed QF10 back to Melbourne.
Curious.

Edit : In view of AFFr milehighclub's earlier comment re ZNM, I don't have a crystal ball, so no idea what will happen to this evening's QF93 MEL-LAX, which is currently not showing a delay.
