Qantas Delays/Cancellations

A few things at play here:

- Both routes last night are within a few nm of each other (~3530nm), with overall wind component differing by just a couple of knots (~P40) ; however
- A380 normally cruises slightly faster at M084-M085 vs M081-M082 for the A333
- If QF2 can arrive before curfew end (6am) this is generally preferable as it wouldn't need to be sequenced. Additionally, arriving before curfew end also means shortcuts if coming from the west (over Royal National Park towards the IAF, sometimes from 200+ nm out), and often cancelled speed restrictions on descent. QF2 got both of these last night
- QF292 arrives at a busy time in the morning, so often has to slow and/or fly extra track miles to fit into the sequence. With the runway config this morning being 16 direction and AC33, DL41, UA863, UA839 all coming in via BOREE (ie from the north).. this pushed QF292 down the order slightly
Agree i didnt add in
- “padded timetable” for ground handling requirements or seasonal winds (often what is a 45min boarding delay becomes an on time arrival) or arrival/departure slots

Net: there are a lot of factors, and the airline holds data and uses it in scheduling

Agree: many if not most international flights have 30 minutes of extra time/padding in their schedules, probably based on what their data says are 'average' i.e. 'median' winds.

The more than 24 hour late QF6 from FCO arrived PER this afternoon (Tuesday 10 September) at 1302 hours.

B789 VH-ZNK is losing further time on the ground as by 1723 AEST (1523 AWST) it had yet to push back. A post-2100 hours arrival in Sydney is becoming a possibility.

UPDATE: FR24 has altered the departure from PER to be 1530, but it's already 1533 over there.

FURTHER UPDATE: It departed at about 1534 AWST from PER and was airborne at 1547 hours. It is showing as overtaking VA562 that departed a couple of minutes ahead, with 'the 6' arriving at its SYD gate at a suggested 2119 hours, 1689 minutes late: more than a day behind schedule.

Meanwhile, also on 10 September, QF1 (1445 hours mid afternoon SYD-SIN-LHR) has A388 VH-OQJ that took off at 1622 hours for arrival at its allocated SIN gate at approximately 2209 late tonight, 49 minutes late.

FR24 states that QF292's Finnair A333 wet leased to QFi had time in the air of seven hours and nine minutes, while the A388 operating 'the 2' had six hours and 40 minutes in the air.
I was on the QF292 on 9/9 . We took off at 9:28. F lounge in SIN last night was chockers. My first time on Finnair. Not a fan of the seat. Photo attached.

Also much annoyance from some with the QF1 arriving about 21:00, but then delayed for 7 hours. QF 38 also was 7 hours late. View attachment IMG_2695.jpegIMG_2696.jpeg

Great information. Wary of going OT in the delays threads, but from what I've read, the Finnair J seats receive very mixed reviews.

I'd missed the delay to the second sector of the 9 September QF1: apologies. A388 VH-OQG was airborne at 0406 hours today (10) with LHR arrival to be 1041 hours, 246 minutes late.

QF38 had A332 VH-EBL, arriving MEL today at 1254 hours, 244 minutes tardy.

In further on Tuesday 10 September, QF300 'Paralympians Special' took off from Paris' CDG at 2233 hours (Monday 9) with PER arrival (on 10) at 2201 hours tonight, 61 behind for B789 VH-ZNL.

Hint go to the QR lounge next time. I went to the F lounge for a snack then zoomed straight to QR J. It was dead quiet inside.

I wonder if the delay to the second sector of QF1 (SIN-LHR) was due to it waiting for connecting passengers off the very late QF37 from MEL, which arrived at a ghastly 02.40 in the morning. The QF1 subsequently departed just after 03.45 in the morning, which would seem to correlate.

They should be okay for time.. 3hr20min on the ground in Perth even with the hour delay.
QF300/QF1300 will be heading to Hangar 96 for a welcome home function.

Still on Tuesday 10 September, B789 VH-ZNE arrived in SYD early this evening at 1812 hours, a creditable 18 minutes early as QF104 from HNL.

It quickly turned around and formed QF5, the 1920 hours SYD-PER-FCO that was in the sky at 2013 hours. PER gate arrival should be 2258 late tonight, 33 minutes tardy.

It could be. I flew Syd-Lhr on QF2 back in April and instead of on arrival in Singapore the cabin crew saying return to the gate in 90 mins they said check with ground staff.
When arriving in the lounge they informed us of a 3 hour delay to the SIN-LHR sector as they were holding the flight for connecting passengers from Melbourne on QF37.
So appears reasonable.

One I missed earlier today was QF35, the 10 September 1200 'high noon' MEL-SIN airborne at 1451 with A333 VH-QPI. Arrival in the Lion City should be at 2038 hours, 143 minutes behind schedule. Earlier today the aircraft had worked empty down from SYD to MEL as QF6012, taking off at 1154 despite being marked as an 0830 hours scheduled off blocks: it arrived at the gate at 1310 instead of 0935.

ZNL is currently scheduled to operate QF3 today.. with it in Hangar 96 earlier this means that QF3 is delayed. Tentatively operating about 1.5hr behind schedule.

In more on Wednesday 11 September, QF356 (E190 VH-UZK, the 1650 from WLG across the Tasman Sea to BNE that took off at 1647 hours is arriving at around 1934 hours, 44 late. I didn't know E190s were used by QFi across the ditch.

There had been comment that B789 VH-ZNC would reenter service 'this week' but with the week half over, that's yet to occur.

On Wednesday 11 September, A388 VH-OQG arrived in SIN as QF2 from LHR only 11 minutes late, but then did not take off for SYD until 2108 hours, resulting in arrival on Thursday 12 at 0619 hours, 69 minutes tardy.

The following QF2 (VH-OQJ), the 2045 hours ex LHR was airborne at 2217 so SIN arrival tonight should be 1819, 54 minutes behind schedule.

B789 VH-ZNE on QF6 from FCO down to PER is arriving on Thursday 12 half an hour late at 1010 hours.
