Qantas Delays/Cancellations

In another 5 January delay, QF67 (0930 hours SYD-BLR, A333 VH-QPG) did not point skywards until 1144, so gate arrival should be about 1723 hours in the late afternoon, 88 late.

Sunday 5 January 2025 had QF51 (A333 VH-QPH), the midmorning 1035 hours BNE-SIN not airborne until 1556. Gate arrival was at 2134 hours where the aircraft formed QF72, the 1915 hours down to PER. This took off from SIN at 2316, arriving on Monday 6 at 0408 hours, 223 minutes tardy.

The plane has then become a domestic flight, QF770, the early start 0535 hours PER-MEL in the sky at 0629 hours. MEL arrival should be 1247, 37 minutes behind schedule.

QF is not the only airline worldwide to arguably have insufficient aircraft to operate all its timetabled services, but its problems were exemplified on Sunday 5 January 2025.

A332 VH-EBV operated QF648 from PER to SYD, arriving at 1828 hours, two minutes early. It formed QF43, the timetabled 1630 hours SYD up to DPS on Bali that was in the air at 2056, arriving at 0006 hours on Monday 6, 246 minutes behind schedule. The return QF44 arrived back in SYD at 1024 hours, 249 late.

The aircraft is next on QF19 that lately has had poor timekeeping. It's unlikely to depart on time at 1205 hours.

Flow on effect from the EY incident last night?

Yes, possible. By 0830 AEDT the EY aircraft had obviously been moved as both runways were in use, but I don't know what time the move occurred.

QF63 is another QFi flight that (since its change to an A3870) has had less than great timekeeping.

On Monday 6 January 2025, A388 VH-OQH arrived as QF12 in SYD 13 minutes early at 0712 hours, but the 0930 hours '63' was not airborne until 1043 meaning late arrival in JNB at a suggested 1525, 40 behind.

QF59 SYD-HND is another that's often late, with today's offering of A333 VH-QPG said to be pushing back at about 1320 hours, 80 minutes late in SYD for the trip to Japan's HND. This is because QF68 from BLR to SYD is arriving at 1200 'high noon', 75 late, as it was delayed on QF67 yesterday. Hard to see an 80 minute turnaround in Sydney being achieved, so 1320 hours may turn out to be overoptimistic.

QF36/52/72 all delayed out of SIN tonight... Happy New Year!

I've covered 'the 72' above, but with QF36 (A332 VH-EBJ), this 1940 hours 5 January SIN-MEL flight took off at 2115, arriving Melbourne this morning at 0716 hours, 66 late.

It then transferred terminals, forming the 0930 hours MEL-SYD QF430 in the sky at 1056 for mooted at gate arrival of 1204 hours, 69 minutes tardy. The plane will then return down to Melbourne as QF441, the 1200 'high noon' QF441 estimated to push back at 1250 hours.

A332 VH-EBM arrived BNE as QF52 from SIN at 1039 hours, 299 minutes late on Monday 6 January. It has formed QF61, the 0920 hours up to NRT airborne at 1232 hours. Arrival should be about 2019 mid evening, 169 minutes behind schedule.

As surmised above, the 1200 'high noon' SYD-HND QF59 had little chance of getting away at 1320. It took off at 1425 with A333 VH-QPG so arrival should be 2157 hours, 117 late.

Sister QPI is on QF87, the 1130 hours SYD-ICN in the sky at 1247 hours for mooted arrival at 2116, 51 behind.

B789 VH-ZNB is on long haul QF7, the 1150 hours SYD across and up to DFW that took off at 1245. If arrival occurs at gate at 1024 as suggested, it'll be 34 minutes behind the eight ball.

When I selected my seat a few days ago my QF434 was a double aisles wide body. No notices but board onto a 738. Who is doing the scheduling?
For at least the last five days it’s been operated by a 738.

Happens from time to time that scheduled widebodies on the SYD-MEL get substituted for narrowbodies.

This is the first time anyone has complained on AFF about such an occurrence.

As @Himeno indicated, it's indeed an odd way to handle a same day delay.

The only reason I can offer is that Border Force require passengers to be rescreened for the (in this case) very late evening/super early next day flight, but that doesn't explain why your girlfriend needed to re-check in with QFi.

Why not just have the baggage handlers alter the tags on their ULDs (luggage containers) to the later flight?

I could cope with going to the loo with a suitcase and backpack but not two suitcases, as the latter might not fit in an airport toilet.

The way you described QFi's handling of this extensive same day delay (albeit to very early the next day as things turned out) adds to QFi's costs, so it doesn't seem to be in the airline's interest to handle it in the way you described.
Thank you for the information that this is not normal. I have complained to Qantas and they have responded by requesting a signed statement from the passenger, authorising my complaint. Privacy legislation apparently. Given that they treated a large of people the same way and there was nothing person specific I wonder where the privacy question comes in but none the less we have supplied requested statement.
My feeling is that when they cancelled the original flight, the re-bookings were scattered over multiple flights so, rather than sort the luggage, they kicked everyone out and forced them to check in again. I can understand the logic there, but not allowing immediate re-check in was nasty.

A lot of delays out of Auckland since VH-XZF got stuck there yesterday. QF146, QF148 and QF158 were all hours late yesterday. E.g. QF158 (AKL-MEL) left at 00:42 instead of 20:55.

QF152 today has been delayed so far about 7 hours.

A333 VH-QPG is about to operate its fifth consecutive badly delayed flight in the shape of QF19 SYD-MNL, expected to depart shortly.

It arrived in SYD on Tuesday 7 January at 1126 hours, 91 minutes tardy as QF60 from HND. 'The 60' has been punctual on only three of the last seven days: it was badly late on two days.

A333 VH-QPI is on QF59, the 1200 'high noon' SYD-HND that was in the sky at 1329 hours. Gate arrival at 2059 hours mid evening is the forecast.

B789 VH-ZNM on QF93, the 1200 'high noon' MEL-LAX was airborne so same day arrival becomes an estimated 0752 hours, 32 minutes behind schedule.

A332 VH-EBM arrived in MEL at 1002 hours, 137 late, on 7 January as QF80 overnight from NRT. It is forming QF35, the 1205 hours MEL-SIN suggested as pushing back at about 1445 mid afternoon.

Late last night (Monday 6), QF15 from BNE up to LAX took off at 2353 so arrival in Movie City is estimated as 1901 hours, 96 minutes tardy for A332 VH-EBO. This is likely to delay QF16, the 2010 hours LAX back down to BNE by about an hour in its pushback, though probably less in terms of its BNE arrival.

Wednesday 8 January's wet leased QF291 (1100 hours SYD up to SIN) has been cancelled.

EBM must have gone tech in MEL as EBQ has now been subbed in to operate the QF35 service this afternoon, resulting in the cancellation of QF775/782 between MEL and PER.

On a separate note, the cancellation of QF291 tomorrow is a result of the QF292 cancellation from tonight. I wonder if it's related to the industrial action being taken by Finnair pilots at the moment...

On Wednesday 8 January 2025, QF128 with A333 VH-QPC arrived in SYD (ex HKG) at 0833 hours, 63 minutes late, as it had overstayed in Hong Kong, having arrived as QF127 "only" 33 late.

Today it has become QF67 to BLR that took off from SYD at 1119 hours (as against its scheduled 0930 pushback) so gate arrival is forecast as 1655, an hour late. This in turn will delay the 1740 hours QF68 in commencing its overnight journey back to Sydney.

QF19, the 1205 hours SYD up to MNL has been unpunctual on many recent days. Today it has A332 VH-EBJ, taking off at 1323 hours for a prjected gate arrival 51 late at 1821 this evening, likewise delaying the overnight QF20 back down to Sydney.

A333 VH-QPD arrived in SYD this morning (as QF88 from ICN) at 1146 hours, 66 late but hasn't yet transformed into a new flight number.

B789 VH-ZND as QF27, the 1220 hours lunchtime SYD-SCL took off at 1312 this afternoon so gate arrival should be about 1116 , 31 late. Generally this flight (and especially, given the greater than minimum turnaround time allocated, QF28 returning) is/are good runner(s) with pleasing punctuality. A contrast to some of the USA QFi flights.

QF93 (1200 'high noon' MEL-LAX, A388 VH-OQD) was not airborne on 8 January until 1329 hours so expected gate arrival is 0807 hours, 47 behind.

On Wednesday 8 January, A332 VH-EBM is on the 1205 hours MEL-SIN (QF35) airborne at 1333 hours. Likely arrival is about 1800 hours, 55 minutes tardy.

Sister EBO arrived in BNE this morning at 0617 hours, 42 minutes behind schedule as QF52 from SIN. It has then operated QF61, the 0920 hours BNE up to Japan's NRT, taking off at 1047. Estimated gate arrival is 58 minutes behind schedule at 1828 hours.
