For once I wish I worked a normal 9-5 job so I could be behind my computer all day! Only times I am awake are out of business hours.... I've checked all night with a refresher on my computer from 6pm-7am and located absolutely nothing. Looks like they only post during business hours.

Its not a change.
Rules state can't change date, time, departure and arrival destinations.
This is simply splitting a 2 pax pnr then cancelling one of them.

Keep checking for a Jo'burg flight... slight pain in the cough given there's 300+ $20-$25 places to stay there.... First world problems!

I suspect the person who got that booking only wanted one seat, so Qantas then released the other one from that pair. That would have happened on the phone.

The problem is unless Qantas let you split the AirBNB booking over two FF accounts, you can't actually travel with a friend, as you need to restrict your redemption to a "family" member as defined by Qantas, under terms of FF program.

I just missed out on one to NY, it was snapped up in about 5 seconds. I could cry right now! But on a positive note, it's the first one I've actually seen.
