Qantas / Emirates tie up (Partnership inc. Codeshare, Status)

I think that a schedule like this would be best as it gives a competitive advantage over SQ with the overnight ex syd. Similar timings with mel with one going to jq and one to qf

1040 SYD-1700 SIN 330
2240 SYD-0500 SIN 330

0930 SIN-1900 SYD 330
2130 SIN-0700 SYD 330

It has been, challenging to say the least, to try and get redemptions on any of QF 1/2, 5/6 and 9/10 recently, so will the ability to use points change. Stick to the oneworld RTW and you get access to all the current OW flights except QF 5 & 6. Throw in Emirates as a QFF partner, could even reduce demand on QF awards.
I certainly hope you are right.

Perhaps I am being selfish but I value those points at $30,000+ which is a sizeable investment to hold in a volatile company.

When there were between 6 and 10 lines of AFF members posting positively about this tie up earlier in the week that was the obvious share buy signal for QANTAS shares. My mind was not on that concept so I missed the bounce.
The same thing happened on AFF when Virgin launched their business class with that many lines of members posting positively.
I did get that one correct.
Try this idea when you are playing to win in the ASX share game!

Also to another poster - why should the status bonus end on BA? Th is no JSA between QF and AA and you get status bonus on AA. Saying that I wouldn't be surprised to see it go.
I do not think BA are going to be too ecstatic with a move that will see most QF traffic to Europe via Middle East. So I suspect the status bonus is going to disappear amongst other things.

And even before this we have been seeing reduced access to BA lounges.

And correct me if I am wrong but I also believe that with the JSA ending the base earning rate of 1 QFF point between capital cities and LHR and FRA via Bangkok and Singapore is going to decrease to 0.25 QFF points which is a poor earning rate.

Reading this thread in DXB on a KBL-BNE run. Initial thoughts below, I'd like to see more of the details re scheduling and pricing.

Initially thought 'cool' re the announcement, but I don't know it will be good. EK has no Y+ product and hideously expensive J every time I've looked. Connctions on FlyDubai mean a lengthy transit to the LCC terminal and no J product. Which makes EK pretty low on my range of options.

QF and BA were much better matched in their offering IMHO. One upside - the end of the JSA agreement might mean BA Y+ might get cheaper than QF again.

Uninspired about DXB as a stopover/connection point. If flying BNE-LHR I'd much prefer an afternoon flight to SIN, then a long night flight to LHR rather than the reverse. If I'm stuck with EK metal on the first sector then no Y+ option for the first 14 hours or expensive J - forget it! Flying via SYD or MEL to get Y+ is what we had before we got Y+ BNE-SIN on the 747. A big step backwards...

And uninspired by DXB over SIN. All heat and dust, and a bad place to interline has been my experience (including today) .

The drugs in dubai issue was an interesting one to raise - I wonder if it had been raised in relation to VA/EY flights via AUH. Same set of rules there. As for transit pasengers the drugs must be declared to customs on entering the country, and if you don't declare them it may be considered smuggling (according to the DXB airport guide). If transiting you don't need to declare anything unless you go through customs. I have heard stories - more than one - of people getting arrested and jailed, but that has been in regard to behaviour the authorities regarded as offensive. Which could be as trivial as swearing at a customs person.

Cheers skip, who is very much looking forward to stepping onto SQ in about an hour...

The indications are QF will still fly to SIN, but with possibly improved times.

Actually I am worried about this. ;) QF has a truly remarkable record when you look at the "enhancements" to flights and the QFF program. And besides, the current flight SIN-PER leaving at 2330 and arriving 0440 makes perfect connections with the first flight of the day to SYD. ;) And why would the improvements not be additional JQ flights?;)

Still waiting for details from QF, MH and UL...

Oh well, waiting provides an excuse to wander

On the topic of the SIN flights retimings, given the SYD curfew, it's virtually impossible to operate night flights to SIN, so really, the only option is to have an 11am or midday flight, arriving into SIN at 5 - 6pm, making most of the later 3K connections. After which, the planes can depart for their return journey at around 8pm, arriving into SYD at approx 6am. In that sense, the opening hours of the SIN lounges don't need to be extended.
Just thinking out loud but wouldn't it be possible to have the following?

- SYD-SIN depart 10:00am arrive 4:00pm (3:00pm during AEDST)
- SIN-SYD depart 8:00pm arrive 6:00am (7:00am during AEDST)

If they do indeed attempt to have a night flight ex-SYD, you would arrive at SIN at about 4am-ish - probably not the best way to start a day but for those travelling for work can get a full day of work in.
I believe the old QF5 was quite popular

- SYD-SIN depart 10:30pm arrive 4:30am (3:30am during AEDST)
- SIN-SYD depart 8:00am arrive 6:00pm (7:00pm during AEDST)

I think both those options allow more than enough time in SIN to connect to the rest of Asia.

It was announced tonight that Standard and Poor's have downgraded QF to BBB- with more to announce a revision early next week.
Indications are that further downgrades are likely.

It seems by all accounts the markets have not been moved by the tie up announcement except in a further downward direction.
It has been the Ma and Pa investors that have moved the share price this week not institutional investors.

This is going to make it more expensive for QF to borrow and lessen there buying power when negotiating new aircraft contracts.

I think QF will have to do more than this tie up to improve sentiment.
This once great airline is soon to be only a shadow of its former self.
And i'm mot refering to J* by my comments.

Lucky that future QF aircraft purchases can be funded with cash and they are looking to reduce debt. - according to the results announcement.

From a curfewless perspective an innovative timetable could look like:

MEL-SIN 0730/1315 or 0130/0715
SIN-MEL 1445/0000 or 0845/1800

I'd be happy with an afternoon flight SIN-MEL, still be able to get a decent nights sleep on arrival. However if you make the bold assumption that QF is keen to move traffic on to/from 3K, then mid afternoon arrival from Australia and mid evening departures from SIN would make sense.

That's quite a big attraction for those of use who currently have to pay for XONE4's

Edit: Stupid comment, codash. XONEx has to be on OneWorld airlines.

Presumably many doing xONEs will be flying QF SYD/MEL-DXB, then BA-LHR.
What are the other oneworld connections into DXB like?

RJ have two daily I think??

BA have 2.5 daily??

CX have daily flight with connection to Saudi (??) used to have DXB-Mumbai as well but stopped. That is about it.

It's a great alliance if you live in Sydney and Melbourne.

For me and all of us in Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane, Hobart, Darwin and another place not Syd / Mel -- it means Qantas has made it impossible to fly on a QF plane to Europe without stupid routing options.

May as well be loyal to Emirates themselves or for better Y seats... Singapore / Virgin or Etihad / Virgin now.

not so bad for BNE and ADL - only 1 hour flight to SYD or MEL...I know not the best, but still not so ridiculous as PER and DRW

A a BNE home porter I've always started my QF/CX/BA international trips with the first sector BNE-SYD.....Flounge & better cabin is the reason. Been doing it for years and will just keep on keeping on......

Really, they have $8.5B Cash on hand over the next ten years reversing the last few years of being cash flow negative?? Thats not what was said in the announcements.

Not sure how much will be cash but it won't be much, unless they raid QFF which has most of the reserves.

You quote the Singapore / Virgin and Etihad / Virgin alliances. What is the difference considering that Virgin only flies out of SYD to Abu Dhabi, and the rest is all codeshare.

Add to that, if timings are right, you can fly EK to DXB, then pick up QF from DXB to LHR if you so desire.

If you fly out of Adelaide with Qantas it is more than simply an hour flight. You need to factor in the two hour gap between flights to allow for flight delays and if Sydney, getting from Dom to Int. Its more like a four hour tack on.

Interesting development, when I first heard about the tie up last week I thought it was stupid, but I am starting to warm to the idea

I though that maybe Malaysian may have been a better fit but I don't think Qantas international can wait long enough for MH to enter one world before they lose even more money. Emirates offer a lot more 1 stop itineraries than MH will ever be able to.

Qantas won't be able to retime their arrival into London so I can still see the long haul flights departing Australia between 4pm and 5pm and arriving into Dubai around midnight, and arriving into London around 6:00am.

I think there will be a few changes in the Emirates network into Australia, flights into Sydney and Melbourne won't change but I can see some flights into Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth being timed for at least once day flights direct to Dubai. I can still see the Emirates flights from Sydney and Melbourne to Auckland still continuing but I am not sure of the timing of the Brisbane flight. It will be interesting to see how Emirates use the Australia to Singapore flights as I am sure that these new code share flights will make for some interesting timings.

One thing I can see is merging or improving of Qantas and Emirates lounges in Australia, especially Brisbane and Auckland and I know Singapore is under renovations.

Times change Bangkok and Singapore were good transfer points but Qantas needed an airline with a great global reach and now Emirates provide a great 1 stop itinerary to over 30 European cities.

London is really in the wrong place for a transfer hub to Europe.

I can see Qantas Lounge in Singapore being used by both Qantas and Emirates.

Terminal 3 in DXB should be interesting, Qantas have always allowed Qantas Oneworld Emerald passengers to use First Class Lounges even when flying cheapest economy, so will be interesting to see how Emirates will handle that. It is possible that the F lounge in Dubai is modified so that there are different sections. I know when flying Qantas ex London on anything but First you can't use the dining area as part of the BA/QF lounge.

10 years is about the right time frame, allows to revamp a whole bunch of lounges in Australia, Auckland and Singapore to go into the next 10 years.

I am sure there will be a few areas when flying Emirates that it maybe not as good as flying Qantas, something like when flying from areas where BA use those contract lounges.

If you can't beat them you might as well join them.:)
