Qantas Family Points Transfer Expiry

Hi there,

I just have a question with regards to points expiry.

My daughter is doing her first solo flight PER to MEL on Monday.

When we made her booking back on 27th July, I transferred her 55,000 Frequent Flyer points so we could try for an upgrade.

We were just discussing her upcoming flight and I was looking at her account - the points expired on 4th October

Is that right - she is not a regular flyer, but I thought it was normally 18 months for points expiry?

It'll be 18 months from the time you earned the points if there is no other activity on your acount in that time. Transfers don't count as "activity".
 
Thats the thing - no other activity on the account, and terms and conditions are very vague.

If I had known, I wouldnt have transferred so far in advance.

There is little chance that she will get the upgrade - but she could have used those points for a flight.

Just tried to call qantas, but FF is only available Mon to Sat 7-7.

Flight is Monday morning, so no no chance to follow up about missing points! So upgrade request will fail.

Weird thing is the activity statement says:

"Expired status credits -55,000 "

It'll be 18 months from the time you she last earned the points if there is no other activity on your her account in that time. Transfers don't count as "activity".

Fixed that for you. The time for expiry does not attach to the points - it relates to the account they are sitting in. Any points (regardless of where they came from) in an account that hasn't earned points for 18 months will expire. As far as I know, the only way that points can get into an account without counting as earning to reset that 18 month clock is by family transfer.

It is very much worthwhile to make sure there is some (token) earn in every account at least every year. Can just be a Red Planet survey, or link a Woolworths EDR etc.
 
Unfortunately I think they are gone, the only way I've heard of Qantas reinstating expired points is via some sort of challenge (earn X points in Y different ways within 3 months or something) and it seems unlikely your daughter would be able to fulfill that.

For future reference, you can request upgrades for family members yourself, no need to transfer the points to them.

Disagree. The QF t&c's are very clear. Transfers do not count as "activity".

Qantas Points Expiry


Family Transfers enable you to transfer a portion of your points to an eligible family member, who is also a Frequent Flyer member, in any 12-month period. You can transfer points online to an eligible family member online or you can call the Frequent Flyer Service Centre to transfer points (a Reward Assistance Fee applies for family transfers completed via a consultant). Minimum 5,000 to maximum 600,000 points per transfer. Family transfers do not keep your account active so your transferred points would ordinarily expire in accordance with the usual points expiry rules; 18 months after your last eligible points activity.

For many people with a car or a car in family / friends buying petrol at BP is the easiest way to keep QF ff points alive. Just need to do once every 18 months. Even for kids who do not drive or have a license.

Upgrades
Members of QF ffp can upgrade eligible family members. No need to transfer.

Upgrading family members

If you're travelling with family, your upgrade request will include all passengers in your booking who are eligible family members. If your booking includes passengers other than eligible family members, you will need to contact Qantas to split the booking and then you will be able to request an upgrade.

If you are not travelling but want to use your points to request an upgrade for an eligible family member, the upgrade will be awarded according to the eligible family member's priority, not the status of the Qantas Frequent Flyer whose points are being used. An exception is made when Platinum One members (who aren’t travelling) redeem points for an upgrade on behalf of eligible family members. In this case the eligible family members will enjoy a higher priority.

How do I request an upgrade for an eligible family member who is not travelling with me?
  • Log in to your Qantas Frequent Flyer account at qantas.com
  • Select 'Upgrade a family member’
  • Enter their Booking reference and Last name and follow the steps

I look after several QF ffp accounts for family . They are infrequent flyers.
Have had very clear emails from QF that points are due to expire. Is also on screen when logging in. But those QF ff points were from earning and not transfers. Took action to ensure the QF ff points did not expire.

Thanks, I'm flattered, but didn't need fixing. what I wrote was accurate. There was no activity on her account so the points expired. If there was no activity on the OP's account, the points would have expired. Transfers are not "activity".
Never suggested the points themselves had a time limit.

Beg to disagree. You stated that the points expired 18 months after the OP earned them, which is not correct. Doesn't matter when the OP earned them or the status of the donor account - only relevant thing is the earning activity of the account they are in - the daughter who is not the reference of the "you" which I corrected.

Family member has points about to expire in 2 weeks. If they transfer those points to MY account will they expire in 2 weeks?
My account has constant inputs from Bankwest so essentially will never expire.
I am a bit confused by the T and Cs

No, they become bound by your account activity and will not expire as they are now your points once transferred.
