Well I predict that the QP's wil be less crowded and the wifi will work better in the lounges. I also predict the Virgin Lounges to be very crowded and DJ likely to be regretting their status match.

I predict fares to be not soft in the short term.

Just arrived home from London last night. Glad I got that flight in.

The first long haul flight for 12 months on Qantas and must admit that cabin service seemed quite indifferent compared to my other previous long haul flights. Maybe they were tired and worried about the industrial action, I flew in economy, but did have seat 80A. The flight from London was packed with barely a seat vacant. Same on the flight over 6 weeks previous. So on some flights they are still getting the numbers.

But I agree this is major action by Qantas in this dispute. I will watch with much interest.

A lot of what I've read online from the pilots side indicates the yields have been running quite high on the international routes.

Funny funny stuff! You claim to be a QF WP NZ G etc...

If Qantas has it's way you can wave goodbye to your nice little lounges, business class and extra baggage allowances and say hello to Jetstar

Qantas are the ones to blame for this 100%

So if the unions get their wishes we would get the lounges, biz class and extra bags?

So you work for the unions?

RIP QANTAS 16 November 1920 to 29 October 2011

One of the world's great airlines - beloved partner of the people of Australia for just over 90 years.

Tragically murdered by an ignorant Irishman.

Funeral details to follow.

Ha, as if it were that simple.

Unfortunately, tragically being killed by a parasitical union that doesn't understand that when you kill the host, the gravy train stops for _everyone_.

Hope the union emergency fund is willing to cover the living expenses of the 35,000 employees they will soon cause to be on the dole.

Unemployment is a bad place to be. Anyone who understands anything about working for a living would rather negotiate an outcome, any outcome, that doesn't result in business closure and unemployment for the workforce.

The unions, the workers, and us here, can get as outraged and pissed off as we like, its cold comfort to those who will lose their jobs over this pig headedness.

Big business across Australia, take note (if you have not already). Never, and I really mean, NEVER, directly employ any group who collectively can bring your business to a halt. Always use employment agencies and workforce middle companies. This way, you can negotiate between several possibilities each year and choose the one which will suit your goals without any stand-over tactics.

Air Asia is currently offering rescue fares to QF pax, posted to their FaceBook page recently (and via OzBargain):

Anyone holding a valid QF ticket to or from any of our AAX destinations (D7 flight code) for immediate travel can access our special rescue fare of AUD$150 (all inclusive) per sector outbound from Australia.

Simply arrive at any AAX airport with a hard copy of your valid Qantas ticket and if we have a seat available we will sell it to you for AU$ 150 per sector ex Australia.

For example it will be possible for passengers to reach destinations including London and Paris for $300 one way from Australia.

Please note that this is only for AAX (Flight code D7) destinations. Passengers can take advantage of booking other AirAsia low cost fares online at www.airasia.com to reach their onward destination.

Guests can arrive at the airport three hours before our scheduled departures and visit the service desk with their valid QF ticket to check availability and take advantage of the special fare

My guess FWA will put an end to the lockout and they'll be flying again in the next couple of days.

Yes it is a conspiracy.By doing this Joyce has forced the Government's hand, got an early Fair Work hearing that can force everyone back to work-including the Unions.
By the way I am due out on QF1 on Tuesday. However the benefits of booking through a TA you have built a relationship with-already have a booking on the BA flight 20 minutes earlier that day.

Meh, knew this was going to happen for sometime. Not Suprised. If you are stuck, Virgin have special fares "saving qantas passengers" tab on there website, the are calling in the heavies from there partners to add extra 60,000 seats so start with. All flights are pretty full, so fares have risen if not an already a stranded Qantas Customer.

But, all I can say is, Well done Qantas, Well done.

Enjoy your company while you can.

This is so un-Australian no matter which side you take...

I am seriously getting sick how pathetic we are becoming in this country, sure strikes are not the best, but now look where we are

Sad day for Australia.....

What a mess the Qantas Management have created tonight. I hope the shareholders are happy because the flying public aint.

I'm hoping for a SC promo offer once things get back up and running again.

So how did it get to this situation? Incompetent management must have played a huge part in letting things get out of hand.

How low do wages have to get before they are acceptable to management? There does actually come a time where the wages are way too low to actually attend work. Is this where Qantas management want to set the bar?

Or does Qantas management support slavery? While wages are acceptable at the moment it is clear that they want to lower wages and conditions to the front line workers whilst maintaining their own wages and conditions. Hypocrisy thy name is Qantas management.

OK now I am really pissed with Joyce - in a little over 12 hours I am supposed to be flying out to the U.S. to a black tie awards ceremony to receive one of THE biggest awards in the world for my profession - and now I'm not going to get there.

I don't know why the government is going to Fair Work Australia - I would have thought going to the immigration department to get Joyce deported would be a better move.

Whatever you feel about Joyce, he is an Australian citizen and cannot be deported!

Alan Joyce made the tough choice here, he took the hard option and is finding a long term solution to solve Qantas' problems.

He's going to get this sorted out, and Joyce will not have Qantas flying until an acceptable solution is found.

Good on Alan Joyce I say, he's got some serious guts to ground an airline. He's earning ever cent of his pay cheque right now.

Qantas seems to have really messed this up. I thought that they should have resolved this rather than drag the Airline further into the mud.

Neither the unions, nor Joyce can hold the high ground on this. The union demands are outdated - if they really want the conditions they're demanding, they should be lobbying the Australian Government for protectionist measures that would give Qantas the capacity to concede to their demands.

Alan Joyce on the other has finally shown his true colours and acted like a petulant child. By shutting down Qantas, he is effectively holding the airline to ransom. The only difference is, he is supposed to be looking after Qantas on behalf of his shareholders not his ego. I don't think there are too many shareholders who will appreciate having their company held to ransom by a CEO who is supposed to look after their interests. Particularly, when this whole debacle was so avoidable.

The only thing that could have resulted in this is government intervention - and if this is what Joyce wanted, why the f*%$ didn't he just pick up the phone and call the PM?

"Hello PM, I need your government to get involved in this now, otherwise I will have to shut down the airline" - A statement like that would 100% get the government involved - without having to cancel all flights WITHOUT WARNING.

Was Joyce just irritated because of the barrage he copped at the AGM? So now his response is to act like a child?

Gillard has said that there was no need fo4r the government to get involved until now. Seems like this had to be done to get their attention.
