Not sure if this is already posted, if so MOD please merge it to another thread.

I have a Westpac Altitude Qantas Black card, and I need to get spend something on Qantas services in order to activate to get my 2 complimentary Qantas Club invites.

I thought about getting Qantas vouchers but I don't have any planned usage of it. I also don't need to redeem any Classic Awards either. Also the normal carbon offset requires a Qantas ticket to be bought. But I was determined to get those free QP invites.

Then I googled and found the following website:

https://www.qantasfutureplanet.com.au/

It is a Qantas website which allows you to buy carbon offsets, EVEN if you don't fly Qantas at all. All you need is to go to "Offset My Flights", pick some arbitrary routes and they will tell you how much it costs to carbon offset the flights. Just click Pay, and then proceed to pay your credit card.

I could have picked SYD-CBR route, and it would cost me $0.54. But I chose SYD-ADL route instead and paid $1.62. I thought I should experiment it and at least get more than $1 dollar.

So in my Westpac online statement, the transaction comes out like this:

29 Aug 2017
QANTAS AIRWAYS LTD MASCOT AUS-$1.62

Westpac has sent me the 2 complimentary Qantas Club passes and I received it today.

So for anyone here who needs to have some kind of Qantas spend to activate complimentary flights/Qantas Club passes/Qantas flight credits from your credit cards, this is probably the easiest and the cheapest way to do so. Also you will help save the environment.

Very clever. The American Express Ultimate Qantas card requires QF spend to make you eligible for the free flight/soon-to-be flight voucher. This would be a clever way of activating that criteria also.

bookmarked for future reference ;)

Great find well done :)

Some of us don't like the idea of throwing money away. So personally I wouldn't use this method.

Great find, and thanks for sharing.

Really.... it was a dollar and 62c!! I suspect you waste more than that on card surcharges or an unnecessary car trip when you could have walked.

Great tip.

How were you notified of your passes?

I made a flight purchase on my Westpac on the 1st.

Nothing, Westpac just sent me the passes about 1 week after the purchase.

Well you are "saving the environment" ..... Otherwise you can choose SYD-CBR and just pay 54 cents (or even shorter QF route somewhere) ...

UPDATE: Barcaldine - Longreach, or Gladstone - Rockhampton is 22 cents each way.

IIRC a data point when this was discussed earlier in the year indicated the minimum spend needed to be $1.00 - but if someone tries 22c and it doesn't trigger it the bank wont be broken ;)

Under $1 didn't work for amex - SYD-BNE at $1.04 is ideal

For someone who has no need to spend money on Qantas flights, spending ~$1 on carbon offsets to trigger a couple of lounge passes worth probably 50-100 times that outlay is hardly throwing money away.

I used this method to trigger the free flight on Mrs 2tall4Y's Qantas Amex Ultimate, so a dollar unlocked about $300 in value for me. At the the time I was sitting on a stack $50 Qantas vouchers bought during a certain promotional period (wink, wink) and simply did not need any more vouchers, nor did I want to pay for any Qantas flights.

Did this today for my Westpac Black. Hope to see the passes soon :)

Transactions shows as:

QANTAS AUSTRALIA AU

UPDATE: When I received my paper statement the merchants name has changed from 'Qantas Australia AU' to 'Qantas Airways Ltd Mascot AUS'

I did not receive my passes, but it appears that I may have made the purchase via my Mastercard. Not sure if using the AMEX would make a difference.

I've given it a go on my westpac black Amex, so fingers crossed. Seems as though a few people haven't had success in the last couple months, so maybe the loophole is closed. Find out in a couple of weeks if I don't receive the passes I guess! I will report back with the outcome.

UPDATE: I made a new purchase using my Westpac AMEX. Got the passes a few days later.

Damn. I forgot to register my card before I bought the offset.

Altitude Qantas Black - Home

Strangely, you have to register the mastercard number, not the Amex number...

Registered now and I guess I'll do it again on the Amex if that's what worked for Dr Ralph (thanks for the update by the way).
