Qantas Green frequent flyer tier

I doubt they would care. They are using the purchase to buy carbon credits (so it should be cash neutral for them) l and they can say they have got x people to offset their homes and it doesn’t matter much whether those people were honest about where they lived. The green leaf icons are fig leaves.
So your saying QF don't care if they claim carbon neutral offsets legitimately or not.
Not aimed at you personally as I assume many in same boat.

So big picture, no matter how you get to carbon neutral or whatever the changing goal is, as long as you can tell the media you got there, xx pax are CN.

Maybe there'll be more QF (green) members living in Tasi than actual Tasi locals.

The QF machine rolls on as always.

Is it possible to gain green tier without flying or staying in an eco hotel? If so how? I can achieve the other 4 categories however i'm not travelling for a little while.
You could make an award booking with carbon offset, wait a week to get the carbon offset recognised, then cancel the booking as suggested here:

Not quite. I am saying that for this particular offset, QF has transferred the burden of honesty onto the customer. They will say that they have offset x tons of carbon making them (almost) carbon neutral plus they have also enabled xx Australians to offset the carbon cost of their homes and their cars. Any dishonesty is in the customer not paying the full whack, but QF will purchase the carbon credits that people pay for.

Fair enough.

Yet if QF did their due diligence they'd be fully aware of the situation. Which I'm quite sure they're aware of anyway.

Really does make the target of carbon zero of whatever company in whatever area rather nonsensical.

It's all about PR spin as always imo.

I doubt that many people will be chasing Green Tier - the average Joe is not interested in complicated paper chases and the requirement to either book a flight or book a hotel room will be a hurdle that many will not clear. Add to that the need to part with actual money for the home offsets and/or points for the Giving Back and it is a package that looks difficult. Few will have benefited from the collective wisdom here and found light touch ways to do it.

So that leaves QF with a white elephant programme. They will want to hook as many people as possible for PR purposes so it is not in their interests to deploy their own resources to disqualify people who could otherwise be held up as examples of the programme's success.

I'm not sure that I would risk cancelling if aiming to get 50SC as surely there is a risk that Qantas will just claw them back. If it was the 10,000 Qantas Points rather than the SCs it might be worth the risk of cancelling.

I looked into this but couldn't see a Fly Carbon Neutral tickbox when booking an award... But I may be blind.

I suppose it depends on how robust Qantas's processes are. It's similar to the discussion on whether people can claim a carbon offset for a home in Tasmania because it's less expensive than NSW or Victoria even if they don't live there. There might be a loophole or two that allows you to get to Green Tier without fully satisfying all the criteria if Qantas hasn't set up the internal checks to strictly validate those requirements.

Apparently the way the "book a reward flight, add carbon offset, cancel the reward flight" loophole works is that the carbon offset is not refunded. So if Qantas does claw back the status credits or points then surely technically they should also refund the carbon offset points/dollars. It's because they (apparently) don't do that, that the loophole exists.

Looks pretty safe to me, when reading the T&Cs:

In order to be recognised for the Green tier activity, Qantas Frequent Flyer members must tick ‘Fly Carbon Neutral’ on eligible flights during the booking process or in My Account. Carbon offset will be recognised as a Green tier activity seven days after purchase.

This is in contrast to the sustainable hotel, where it's clear from the T&Cs that the member has to stay at the hotel to complete the green activity.

For the fly carbon, I imagine most QFF members that chase SCs will achieve that activity organically over time, with the exception of maybe members with an anniversary in the following months (i.e. March, so only a few weeks to make a booking, hence the book-and-cancel loophole), and I guess those that book via corporate systems, that is until Qantas lets you offset an existing booking via "My Account", or until they book a leisure trip.

Certainly there is nothing in the T&Cs that asks for anything more than selecting the option to offset when booking a flight. You would expect if they are going to claw back points or SCs from those who cancel flights or don't fly that it would be clear in the T&Cs. Maybe it is too complex for Qantas IT.

l I’ll

How much cheaper?

As noted in the reply immediately after your post, it's right at the final stages of booking. I was starting to get worried myself as I was booking my LRE flights (gone are the days I would pay cash as the price is ridiculous). I booked my QF flight on Friday and I got my final fig leaf (thanks @Mr H) Sunday night. As a data point however, I have just started my membership year and the screen that popped up when opening the app suggested I would have green tier until Feb 2024, is this tracking correctly with everyone else?

That's interesting - mine only says it will be valid to the end of my current membership year... that's to Aug 2022. I don't mind as it's an easy additional 50SCs to earn in that new membership year and towards LTG. I would have gotten to LTG by now - I suspect - were it not for the pandemic.

Cheers,
Matt.
