Qantas Hotels - Seriously WTF?

Was looking for a hotel close to where I needed to visit in Chengdu, China and so used the map option on the Qantas Hotels booking page to locate a hotel that was suitably located... made the booking etc - all fine.

Landed in Chengdu on Tuesday evening and tried to get a Didi from the airport to the hotel. Didi couldn't find/didn't recognise the hotel name, so then I entered the address that came with the booking - that got me nowhere either. The locals were trying to help (well apart from the fake "Didi Uber" drivers who just wanted me to get in the car and we would figure it out on the way with the help of a mysterious friend) but they couldn't figure it out either despite the various translate apps being used aplenty.

Eventually a school girl who could speak reasonable English came along and between the two of us we managed to identify on the Didi map the approximate position of the hotel based on the map on the Qantas Hotels webpage and we managed to get Didi to accept a booking to there with the expectation that I should be able to find a roughly 20 story Hyatt once I got within +/- 100 metres of it.

Got to the address with the Didi driver and... nothing that vaguely resembled anything like a hotel... it wasn't quite China's equivalent of the Bronx, but it was a lot closer to the Bronx than it was to Broadway - 2am in the morning with people sitting around cable drums drinking and smoking etc. The Didi driver dumped me and fled.

Fortunately the locals were friendly and hospitable, and out came the translation apps again and eventually they managed to find a number for the Hyatt and rung them and gave me the phone to speak to the manager - who couldn't speak English. So more use of translation apps and it was organised that the hotel would send a taxi to pick me up and take me to the hotel - which is about 10km away from the location shown on the map on the Qantas Hotels page, and the street name is absolutely nothing like the street name that came with the booking confirmation. So after a ginormous 3.5 hour stuff around I finally checked into the Hyatt at 2.30am.

It would be an understatement to say that I am a little bit annoyed, fortunately I have done a reasonable amount of travel so I didn't freak out or end up in the foetal position crying - but I am concerned about what could have happened to say a solo female traveller or a first time overseas traveller - it would have been pretty confronting for a person like that.

I will give Qantas Hotels a call tomorrow to thank them for their exemplary geographical accuracy, but what are the thoughts about what I should ask for in compensation for this enormous stuff around?

I could almost be excused for thinking that Qantas Hotels has been trying to kill me over the years - back in 1994 I booked a hotel in Los Angeles through the Qantas Hotels page - it would have been really really nice if they had of warned me before I booked it that this hotel they were offering was in the Skid Row section of Los Angeles... after I checked in around lunch time I decided to go for a walk to stretch the legs, and about every third building was burnt out, there were needles lying on the ground everywhere, and eventually an ambulance pulled up beside me and insisted that they take me back to the hotel rather than me walk the 500 or so metres back to it - and the paramedics were wearing body armour. Needless to say I didn't go out after dark...
 
Ask for a refund of the first night that you essentially missed through having been touring greater Chengdu. It’s a nice package that they can come to grips with.

Someone said that Qantas hotels is simply Expedia with the Qantas front on it. Haven’t have a look there and see what it says got myself. Not saying it’s going to help you here but it would be an interesting data point.

I never trust what any booking site (QF Hotels, booking.com, Agoda etc) say without verification, and step 2 is to open a new tab and go to TripAdvisor for that same property and see what it says re average price, reviews, Q&As etc.
 
Hope you get them to fix up the address. Nicely told story but one of the tribulations of travel!

Qantas hotels is a shop-front for Expedia. I can categorically tell you this as I’ve spent fair amount of the past two months in various hotels who have told me their payments come from Expedia

I do like it as you pay🦅🐦‍⬛ in A$ via an Australian merchant and so don’t get whacked the 3% international transaction fee

Informally I can say the commission is more than I expected but that’s how business is done
 
I always check out the actual hotel's website before booking through any OTC. It certainly paid off when booking the Hokkaido trip even though I didn't get to stay there. I wanted a hotel in Esashi on the south west coast of Hokkaido. Unfortunately there are 2 Esashis on Hokkaido. The other is on the north east coast and about the furthest away from the one I wanted.
But a complete surprise for something like a Hyatt.
 
Strange. So none of the locals could type Hyatt in their phones so none of them picked up that the Hyatt was in a totally different location to the address provided?
 
I suspect what happened here firstly is that the maps feature on any western site is useless if it uses GMAPs. Google does not have an accurate map in China and isn't allowed to. Ive seen the same hotel show up twice 1km apart on gmaps before.

The next is there's 3 "Hyatts" in Chengdu. Grand Hyatt, Hyatt Place and Hyatt House. It's likely that asking for the right one got lost in translation and they just sent you off to one of them.
 
I agree that realistically Qantas is probably limited in what they can do because of the GPS obfuscation happening there - but ultimately it is their responsibility to give you accurate information.

If you have an iPhone, Apple Maps is sort of a working middle ground for English speakers.

Maybe Trip.com is a better choice in China. Buy a ticket and see the pandas in Chengdu. Last time Expedia showed me way cheaper prices in Chile than Qantas Hotel. Anyway, hope ou have a nice trip!
 
I just book with the accomodation direct. No need for pesky third parties. Three is a crowd.
I also prefer to book direct when I can. Although sometimes this is difficult if not staying with a known chain, where there isn’t an English language web site. There are plenty of places in Japan, for example, with no English web site, and not a chain - independent hotels, ryokan, ski places etc that do not offer the option of booking direct.

Agree, many times I have found the Qantas Hotels price is significantly higher than the price offered directly on the hotel's site. A few thousand Qantas points accompanied by zero support if problems crop up has ruled Qantas Hotels out on my travels.

Though i have found a couple of times, sending an email in English gets an unexpected reply in English.
Yes I’ve had that too - and also had it vanish into the gloop.

Booking overseas accomodtionis getting to be quite a worry, what with all the scams with online booking aggregators. So far, we have been lucky, but I’m feeling a bit anxious at the moment after hearing about people I know being scammed with a fake listing, people’s accounts being hacked etc. Maybe it’s time to stop visiting those more authentic places unless on a tour eg Intrepid. But that’s not how I like to travel.
For upcoming trip to Spain and Portugal, we will mainly avail ourselves of direct booking with Accor - I will be Platinum by then courtesy of their special offer and my Accor Plus credits.
