Qantas or Jetstar domestic flights from Sydney international terminal?

Normally they day before where they need to make up delays, and rejig flights.
Even flying the aircraft without pax might catch up an hour for example.

These are always fun. The only time I've been in the SYD Flounge (courtesy of my WP sister) was on a domestic tag back when JQ1 routed SYD - MEL - HNL (in the A332 days). Even better it was a wet, windy and stormy day and the flight was delayed by 3 hours, so it was 4.5 hours Flounging rather than 1.5 :D

still good to have access to the better Intl J Lounge compared to the QP.

Is it? The few times I have attended the Intl J lounge (in between short drops to SG!!) It seemed very average, dark, over crowded and not really a nice place to be! All times have been peak periods so perhaps it is slightly more tolerable during off peak?

Guess the experience really depends on the time of the day. But in terms of food and beverage selection, it beats QP easily.

My last few visits to the SYD Int J Lounge was during the peak prior to the bank of morning QF departures and it was super busy. Hopefully, the 9am departure from SYD on a Sunday in March would yield a less crowded lounge experience.

I miss the bar service in the domestic lounge when in an international J lounge, but the range of food is definitely much better in the international lounge.

J is a reference to 'business'?
My limited experience with the international lounge at Sydney (never having been in 1st) is it's way more airy & open (and less dark) than the domestic one; and as has been said, the food & drink are considerably better in the international one.
Crowded's likely to be a Thing; although domestic business gets pretty ridiculous at Sydney at that regard (and I've only been in there 3-4 times :)).

However, my motivation for this thread in the first place was one of few chances I'll ever have to try the 1st ... whatever seating class that is. :)

J is a reference to 'business'?

Yes. J refers to Business, F First and Y Economy (and W Premium)

For most airlines J represents the highest fare class for Business, for Qantas tickets are J,C,I or D

The FLounge is definitely worth a visit. Domestic flights from the international terminal are certainly worth the hassle if you can use the FLounge.

Of course you could go on a short overseas trip e.g. to NZ and access the FLounge too.

Well in fact, what brought all this up was my better half's membership anniversary being in May, and her being really quite close to Platinum membership for the first (and possibly last) time.
A mate who spends half his time in the air suggested F was relatively inexpensive to New Zealand on the Emirates A380's, so I had a squiz at the Qantas site and a code-share (QF flight on Emirates 'plane) F ticket was only just over double full-fare economy at ~$1600 return. She gets enough status to get her over that line, and I get to at least touch that particular brass ring. :)

To dribble-on further, those Emirates flights leave late morning and I'm told the Sydney F lounge restaurant has a really good lunch ... so, I was looking for short-hop flights (for after May) so that we might get a chance to sample it. Yeah New Zealand is indeed another option, but we could go Mould Coast or The 'Bane or Melbourne just overnight whereas an NZ trip would more sensibly be a bit longer. :)

Anytime of day is great in the F lounge however lunch/dinner are certainly better options for experience.

My last ten trips have all been early morning (along with everyone else) meaning breakfast only and a very full lounge. Gotten to the point where I am going to search out PM flights just so I can experience something other than Buttermilk Pancakes and English breakfast (first world problems )

I was lucky, or unlucky, to book a JQ flight SYD-BNE from international terminal. Visited the F lounge with wife and daughter.

Wife has asked a few times when are we going back to the nice lounge. ;)

My next visit will be flying overseas probably. I should try and do a domestic flight from the Int terminal sometime.

Its a pain in the bum when I did it, mviy.
Nice to be able to do it, but its a pain in the bum.
Why I hear you ask.
a.With JQ doing it, I was not able to do OLCI flying as a dom pax on an int flight, as I had to show my Aust passport, to be able to get a JQ stock BP so they can stick that orange sticker onto it.
b.You can't use Smartgate.
c.You have to queue up on dep, and then again on arr. The queues can be very long.
d.They have to stamp your exit on the BP and then on arr on the BP, and you don't get to keep that BP either, its taken over by ABF as its a quasi IPC
e.Because the service is provided by JQ, what you are used to flying true int, is very different from this sector in question. I was in subclass of J on JQ SYD - MEL, they practically "forgot" to give me a welcome drink on me sitting down on that 330. I didn't make any comments, so just went with the flow.
Have also done it in Y on the 787 SYD - MEL.
Did the J on the (former QF8) 747 BNE - SYD, that was great, my first experience upstairs of the 747.
Its up to you, what you see as a downside and what you see as a plus.
Though I do like this flying dom pax on an int flight, I would preferably be flying to NZ though, even if its even for an Easter long weekend, or Christmas longweekend when it falls on 4 days, as it will this year.

Are there scheduled flights out of SYD (or MEL) to international destinations with domestic legs?

Are there scheduled flights out of SYD (or MEL) to international destinations with domestic legs?
Sometimes Jetstar tacks a domestic leg onto Gold Coast / Japan flights, may be northbound or southbound. And until the flights were suspended on the weekend, they were doing the same for the Gold Coast / South Korea service.
Look for services using a 787. They carry some domestic pax to fill empty seats.
But if you are flying say SYD/OOL/NRT then you are flying international ex SYD and will have to stay in the international (transit) lounge in OOL.
