Qantas plan to axe frequent flyer joining fee

That's good because I've still got my wife's old white card and we're off to MEL shortly so we can try it out. Do they send out a new one ever?

I wasn't aware they had done away with that rip-off scheme. I have booked quite a few flights for my mother over the past few years but have never given her QFF number, for one because she can't find it, and also because I thought she'd have to have it 'reinstated'.

If there's one thing I've learnt from life experience ... it's to never assume anything:!:

I have a friend whose work recently paid for her qantas club membership, she signed up as if from new and to her surprise, they linked it all to a FF account that she hadn't used for about 8 years, and that she'd completely forgotten about.

Nice but around 6 years too late! Any chance I can get a refund of my QFF joining fee? ;)

Nice spin Qantas. I still hope your direct transfer becomes a horrible failure and mess for you.
Why am I thinking the same thing? Seriously though all this emphasis on credit card points cannot be good for FFers who earn the majority of their FF points through regular travel....

I agree the increase in numbers will dilute the possibility of getting FF seats especially in Business/First which is hard enough already.

AMEX recently sent an email in which comparisons were made re the number of points needed in various FF schemes to the same destination and QF came a poor last in most.

I for one am not transferring my points. Not flying QF will be a blessing.

surely the free QFF membership, is to boost the customer database numbers right up, before QF look to sell this off-shoot of the company (or list it on the ASX or whatever..)

Isn't this what a Canadian airline did a few years ago? From memory I think the FF part of the company was valued more than the 'flying' part of the organisation.

Does anyone recall when they started charging? I joined in 1995 and it was either free or $30. It went up to $82.50 at some stage (was that after Ansett died?) and has stayed there.

I'm considering joining the kids up to QFF just for the points for the US trip but only if it's free. Wouldn't be worth it otherwise I think.

It was $75 before the GST came in, bringing it to $82.50.

I believe it was around $50 when I joined mini serfty up in 1996.

Been a charge for it for as long as I remember. I signed up in the late '90's but can't recall the exact amount.

I have just dug up a QFF application form from 1994. It was $30 then ...

Then it hadn't changed much in the previous 3 years (assuming Australian Airlines Frequent Flyer program before the Qantas merger).

So was Ansett always free or did they drop the charge 5 minutes before they went under?
I never joined Golden Wing as my company only used QF but to this day I meet up with people who bleat over how many million points they lost in the fall.

I joined in 95 and don't remember paying a joining fee..

I did see someone the other day with a Golden Wing baggage tag (?) on their backpack..

You must keep a lot of aviation stuff, 1994 is 15 years ago, I am surprised Mrs Serfty hasn't asked you to get rid of some of the older stuff. I thought your last house move you would have had to throw a few things away.

I joined in June 1999 and I think it was $75.00 or $80 before GST. not sure if I keep credit card statements more than 5 years.

Yep, it definitely cost me $30 to join QFF back in 1995... I joined Ansett's program a couple of years before that and don't recall paying a joining fee.

I joined in 2003 and the fee was $82.50 so it would appear that it has remained at that level for many years....

I'm a QFF but my flatmate isn't. We're just about to book for London in November - I want him to join QFF but can he join just before flying and still credit the trip to the scheme? I ask just in case between now and November the scheme becomes free. Call me cheap. Please!

Yes you can. In fact, you can even retrospectively join up to 30 days after a flight and get credit for the flight.

The current plan is that the everyday rewards card will allow you to get FF points. If you also use a direct sweep card then you will get those points as well.

I hope this comes about soon, because I don't make enough to get one of those CC's and earn points, so I'd be happy to spend the way I currently do and get FF points as well as fuel savings. Although I assume I'll have to spend a fortune to even get close to a free flight, still better than nothing :p

Oh and OT, about time they axed the fee when you can just sign up with a foreign address and then change back to your actual address before they send the card.
