I tried with no success.

I had the Citi Qantas Money - then applied for a Citibank one (with the Velocity Points) - approved instantly. I then closed the Qantas Money one (took 3 months to show on my credit reports) and then wanted to try the Virgin Money one but was instantly denied.

I called and sent an email and a letter but with no success.
So it seems that going from a Citi-serviced credit card to a Citi-branded card is fine but then going from a Citi-branded card to a Citi-serviced card is an instant denial.
Thanks for the info; I won't bother for another Citibank for a while.

I have the Citi Rewards (the one with Velocity sign up bonus and second year Velocity bonus) and then applied for and was successfully approved for the Virgin Flyer card. Currently also hold CBA, Amex Qantas Ultimate, ANZ Travel Adventures. I also just received approval for a new Qantas money card.

Have previously been knocked back by Citi every once in a while but there seems to be no pattern to their decisions.
Thanks - your luck with several cards leads me to believe I've had too many in a short period which happened later last year. I'll see how I go with another non-Citi application and then sit things out for a while if I get rejected again.
 
Citi is known to be more challening when jumping between their serviced and branded cards - pretty sure another member mentioned they have a 9 month exclusion period in general, even if not mentioned in the T+C's
 
The application page for the Qantas Premium Platinum card doesn't seem to be working at the moment. Has anyone else had problems?

 
Does anybody know how long it takes for the account to go from "pending closure" to closed? I cancelled my account yesterday with a $0 balance but it's still pending

This one took MONTHS to change status to closed when I did it.
The time period is irrelevant.

If applying for other forms of credit, all that you need is the cancellation letter(s).

Nope. That date starts the day you cancelled the account. This will be recorded on the letter from the bank. You need to ensure that you keep this letter for future reference/need.

Ahh, thanks. Good to know. I'll be cancelling mine tomorrow just as soon as today's BPay payment is confirmed and I have $0 balance. But will likely return to it in 12 months time.

St George seem to be particularly difficult with these letters as many don't say it's completely closed but go on to talk about if any debits come on later you are liable among other vague language. last card i had with St George i just ended up asking them to assess my application as if they were still open, thankfully still approved.

This is standard for most banks. But it's irrelevant. You account was closed on the date you closed it/date on the letter.

agree it's irrelevant for waiting out exclusion periods but not your second comment below and even then only ST George has been difficult for me.

Up to you what you want to believe. I can only report on my own experiences and those reported by others.

If you want to wait for it to move from 'pending' to 'closed' go for it.

I have at least 5 that have NEVER moved from 'pending' to 'closed'! Clearly demonstrating why there is no need to wait at all.

Closed my QF Premier in 06/10. The account status on the app goes to "Pending Closure" or something to that effect. A letter is issued from QF Money that the account is marked for cancellation; however, the actual closure will only happen as part of the next statement cycle. In my case, the card went from Pending Closure to Closed/Cancelled on 06/11. so in my case it took a month for the change to happen

Re : staying open on credit file - this has been my experience as well. Applying for a bank loan, the loan officer kept coming back that I have an UNSECURED NAB CREDIT showing on my file. I supplied the Closure Letter from QF Money and it seemed to help progress the loan application for a few days. But after a while, the loan officer called again and asked about the same UNSECURED credit. He wasn't convinced that the card was indeed closed. Had to wait until 06/11 and the credit report was updated.

Yea, I see what you mean. This what happened to me - the card was still showing as Open in the credit file, but Pending Closure in QF app and actually Closed from an end-user perspective ...
 
I had similar issues with the QF premier card and my credit report when I applied for a Westpac card, and it resulted in my being refused despite proof showing otherwise.

This is the issue and major frustration I have had. In some cases I've been asked why I said I have no other credit cards despite the credit report stating otherwise; in this case I could supply the closure details. In other cases I've been outright refused as the end of the application before a human has even looked at it, with all other circumstances remaining in place. This disparity is the most likely reason for the rejection I'd say. Citibank has been the worst for this. I take this into account during my applications now and I'll likely push my next set of applications back a month as I really want the HSBC for the gold status :).
 
The last group of post on this thread go to illustrate why it is important to close and account as soon as you possibly want. Sure in a month or so, it get's closed at the date you requested and is in the report matching and doesn't affect the 12 or 18 (or whatever) month waiting period, but if you want to jump onto another credit card between the time you close and the time it registers you are closed you are in a tricky situation as one poster pointed out, in that if you don't include it in your application and during the application the computer (or person) see the discrepancy, that alone let alone any credit worthiness may jeopardise that application. If you include it, the same could happen (or push you over the edge.

I try to wait until my credit file is correct when making new credit card applications (and I turn over quite a few)
