Qantas proposal to reward people who vaccinate with flight credits/points

Undoubtedly will involve some money into Qantas coffers from the Australian Government to compensate for the points

I suspect many other companies offering rewards / prizes will come forward, well maybe not many many, but a few I suspect with jump on the bandwagon, get some positive vibes among the vac rate.
I suspect a reasonable number especially in the travel sector will, obviously they need to wait until everyone's had a chance to get one first, looking like October/November at this rate.

Bonus Qantas points from Woolies would be welcome, might even get me shopping there again....

Second prize: *two years* of unlimited Economy flights on QF/JQ.
Are you just speculating or is that confirmed?

From the ABC story reporting on what Joyce told the today show this morning, it seemed rather fixed that the top prize would be a single year:

I thought it was excellent that Allan Joyce has started to detail incentives for people who have been vaccinated. I realise that Qantas potentially has a lot to gain by more people being vaccinated but at least they are doing something.

If only the government would follow suit so that the borders could reopen!

Well AJ tried the stick approach and that got a massive backlash. QF appears to be considering taking a leaf from the book of the US and other places offering incentives for shots (like lottery draws, free burgers etc).

I heard a senior manager from QF the other day suggest it could take the form of points, flight vouchers or SC's (lol).

I wonder IF they do this how would it actually work? How does one prove it? a screenshot of a AIR immunisation record with two shots? Of course nobody could possibly fake that. Otherwise how? Privacy concerns for some no doubt so while I am all for the idea, I wonder exactly how it might work in practice.

That would be a breeze if on vaccination we were at least offered the option of receiving some sort of certificate of vaccination.

Incidentally, I wonder if Virgin will follow suit?

In SA they had some prepared vaccine certificate that the DR was going to sign, date and put the vaccine details sticker (type, batch, expiry etc.) on, I asked the the Dr put the sticker and details in my ICV rather than the certificate option.

From the ABC 'We are trying our best to help with this rollout': Qantas offers prizes and incentives for vaccinated travellers

Looks like Qantas is one step ahead of everyone.

Based on what Joyce told 9 news (quoted above from ABC), the plan at this stage is to give everyone 1000 points but also have a large prize. The Unlimited travel on the Qantas network for a year is quite impressive.

If those unlimited QF/JQ flights come with status credits I'll still have no chance of making LTP!

However, I do think it's a great initiative, so well done AJ.

Interestingly United Airlines is doing a similar promotion in the US. Over there they are getting those CDC cards (google images "CDC Covid card" if you don't know what I mean), and that's the official proof of vaccination.

United is requesting people to upload a photo of their vaccination record to their frequent flyer account, in the same area as your contact information.

United says this will be retained after the competition has closed to assist with future travel eg. traveling to a country requires check-in staff to confirm vaccination status (which they can do given it's in your account) but they also say you can remove this information from your account at any time.

Obviously, with those CDC cards, they're really easy to fake, in fact some employees working at vaccination centres were even caught stealing them.

Another interesting thing about the United promotion is that those who are unable to get the shot for whatever reason and also eligible to enter the competition and just have to upload a medical certificate stating why to the same spot above.

That would be a breeze if on vaccination we were at least offered the option of receiving some sort of certificate of vaccination.
In Australia, the reason why they're asking for your medicare number is so that it can be put on the national immunisation register. Mine was updated the day after my first COVID shot to have a new COVID-19 immunisation status at the top, further down the page lists the specific jab and date. Any Australian with a medicare or IHI number should be able to download their statement (from Medicare online) and I assume this is probably what you'll need as official proof when traveling in the future.

as a general rule no points or status for flight prizes.

I'd aim for minimum 2000 status if the prize did earn. But I have the freedom to fly every weekend.

Pity QF doesn’t have pooling as we’ve managed to get every single family member (except the kids of course) vaccinated in AU now and I could get some serious points from them ;) Just waiting on the second AZ jabs for some.

Crickets from Bain/VA2 and Rexy still... cmon pull the finger out!

I’d like to see our major supermarkets who profited extraordinarily from the pandemic chuck something big in too.
