Qantas seems to have reduced its Economy Flex fares on key domestic routes like the golden triangle and east-west routes. The lead-in Flex pricing is now:

  • $359 on SYD-BNE
  • $369 on SYD-MEL
  • $419 on BNE-MEL
  • $679 on MEL-PER
  • $699 on SYD-PER
On these routes, the Flex fares also seem to now fluctuate depending on the Red e-Deal price. If the lower Red e-Deal fare buckets are sold out, the Flex fare is also higher.

I suspect this is a competitive response to VA's recent fare structure changes.

No changes on other routes though. E.g. Flex on SYD-CBR is still an eye-watering $555 one-way.

suggests demand is low on the high volume routes for the foreseeable future
on the lower per day service routes suggests there's no great problem filling up seats.

the cheap J class ADL-Mel is $549 y'now what the Eco Flex is $552

so there's still profit gouging at hand...
