Qantas stops vegetarian meals on shorter domestic flights

Oh, I just love the marketing spin.

Don't worry it's only on shorter flights that they're doing it.

Like ... those under three hours.

Like ... almost all routes except east coast to Perth.

You could almost believe that Qantas is being run by a meglomaniac determined to bring the airline to its knees before he runs off with all the loot. What a relief that that's not the case.

Sorry, I should've been clearer. The savory puff served in UL had some veggies and cheese in it. Understand that vegans can't have cheese, so just veggies should do it? Make the savory puff a vegan/veggie option for everyone who opts for a vego meal ... or make a savory & a sweet puff - like the ones we get in 7-11 ? Instead of asking "chicken or fish", the FA's could ask "sweet or savory" 🤣

That's the thing. From what I read/heard/observed, so many pax are now choosing vego options onoboard (for a variety of reasons including health), so my point is, wouldn't it make sense to retain or at least not remove the current vego options?

Let's not forget the fruit cups :)
All the discussion about how many pax want vegan/vegetarian these days and will be up in arms does seem to run counter to the simple fact that the only detailed knowledge of preferences is held by QF. I am sure they ran up a spreadsheet at some point. I know from often having to occupy row 3 in J that only vegan/vegetarian dishes seemed to remain on offer.

Yes exactly. And as I live in Canberra I often have to take a sequence of “short” flights to get to my destination, so the total flying time is actually quite long.

The flight crew had to ask a customer how they feel to have the salad but they’ll remove the chicken slices that were laying on top. 🤔

So the removal of vego options will help the crew by removing any right of expectation of pax for a non-meat option; instead of trying to help, the crew can just say "Alan says no."

My understanding is that there is one meal per flight - that does not mean it will contain meat. It may still be vegetarian. Qantas spokesperson stated as much.

Now this is even worse … when it was “no vego options onboard” it was certain that those that need vego should be eating elsewhere. Now saying “May still be vegetarian” makes it uncertain

Oh come on, where's your sense of fun? Adds a bit of spice to the flight when you're excitedly waiting in anticipation to know whether you'll be able to eat the meal or not! 😉😉

Indeed, on my last flight SYD-MEL is was one or more vegetable Arancini. I didn’t eat it but I never do on the short hops, I’ve either eaten in the lounge or going to eat a proper meal on arrival.

Read the UK Business Traveller on the flight to SIN last night. Had an article on EK’s new improved food offerings including vegan meals.
So, the universe remains well in balance: where one improves, another weakens. Was that called evolution, natural selection, or what was the name for this?

From their internal emails.

Vegetarian meals on all domestic flights

Following a clear message from our customers, we will be increasing our vegetarian meals on our domestic services. During COVID we simplified our economy meal offering on all domestic flights under 3.5 hours – this included a vegetarian meal on many flights, but not all. In the coming weeks, we’ll start carrying vegetarian options on all flights. We’ll also reintroduce fresh fruit on board, which was paused during COVID. We’re also in the middle of a broader refresh of the menu on domestic flights, including introducing new vegetarian options. Phil Capps, our Executive Manager for Qantas Product and Service said: “We’ve heard the message loud and clear about having vegetarian meals on all of our flights and so we’re making that change as a priority. There’s a lot of work happening to get Qantas back to its best and that includes listening to the feedback from our customers as we keep investing in our product and service.”

So the Guardian article seems like a beat up piece based on one person's alleged experience and extrapolated to be that Qantas hates Vegans, when in fact it is quite the opposite?

Yes, entirely. Because it's not that they discontinued vegetarian meals at all. They just discontinued choice.
