Hi All,

Just FWIW and a question:

I am sitting in the Qantas Sydney First Class Lounge as I type, sipping on some Bollinger and waiting for my Ranger Valley 300 day grain fed tenderloin with cafe de Paris butter and chips.

I am booked business class Sydney to Hong Kong on QF87 and then first class Hong Kong to LHR.

I was charged 192,000 points for the privilege, ie first class all the way.

So this is to answer the question I have seen posted, as to whether one can gain access to the first class lounge if the immediate leg is not on first class, it seems you can, as long as they charged you the full 192k points (she checked)

my question is this: she asked why I did not book a business leg to HK and the first HK to LHR as that is what I am doing. I thought that the airlines stopped this mixed class flight situation?

Don't get me wrong, the first class lounge is nice on a first visit, but would hate to be wasting points unnecessarily.

Can anyone shed some light?

Thanks is advance.

Food just arrived, go to go! :)

I thought that the airlines stopped this mixed class flight situation?

How could they stop it if you made two separate award bookings?

(Anyway, what's done is done. Enjoy the Bolly! :))

The booking engines will sometimes throw up mixed class options if it can't get the preferred class all the way - it is fairly clear. but thems the rules.
At least you get FL access and a long F leg.

Its those who book BNE-SYD-LAX in a mixed J/Y class that are really peeved.

And sometimes people do it deliberately - my father burnt points for an F Qantas oneworld award so that my mother could fly F on AA (he was on a DCIRC) and yet could only get J on the SYD-HKG and LAX-SYD legs - only F flown was on AA!

I recommend the Pav next ;)

I guess if you book two legs separately you may have to check in again? Go through customs mid-trip? I don't fly international enough to know...

Will enjoy the Bolly - it is going down nicely while I ponder the error of my ways, and weigh up rich sticky date v cleansing sorbet for pudding...

I guess it was good to be able to see what is behind the door but I think perhaps once might well be enough.

Nice and quiet, great service.

No; if Qantas all the way (or Qantas then oneworld), simply check in with your luggage and both tickets.

It will be checked through to your final destination.

The cheese plate is also rather nice if you have room ;)
I have flown this exact routing J to HKG and F to LHR. Not as an award though.
The booking engine does throw up some short and curlies with awards.
Enjoy the trip, I recommend a spell in the cabanas at the Wing tomorrow :)

Hi Princess & thanks for the info.

I am not a cheese man but will have a look for the cabanas tomorrow - I guess the Wing is somewhere in the HK airport? Is it Qantas or a partner airline lounge (I guess - showing my ignorance here!)

Boarding in 9 minutes...

Yes you have to be careful with the mixed class options that get thrown up when looking for flights - e.g. I was looking for J class flights from HKG to MEL recently and being shown options like HKG-SYD in Y then SYD-MEL in J: not exactly what I would consider an overall J experience!

It's a CX lounge and you will have access, upstairs and opposite gate 3 ( I think ??) the QF/BA lounge is closer but not as good, nothing beats a soak in the tub after an overnight flight :)
Let us know how you go.

Thanks - will check out CX Wing lounge in HK tomorrow morning - would love a good soak!

Coming back LHR-HKG in first on CX252 so may get two bites at that cherry!

Then home HKG-SYD a few days later on VA upper class so should get a good exposure of what the various carriers offer in one return flight!

Once you start.... ahem.
Could not be further from the truth.

The First Class Lounge is nice and I would route a flight via SYD/MEL to go and visit but I would not go out of my way to visit it if I did not need to go anywhere. I certainly would not pay First Class airfare or FF points to visit it....

Yes. In HKG definitely the Wing (its a relatively short walk from the normal Qantas gates)... Great bath in the cabana, a lovely buffet dinner and then sit at the long bar and have a drink..

Anyone know where one can find a list of routes out of Sydney that Qantas offers a first class service on?

Just curious - no first class to HKG tonight so wondering which destinations are so blessed... google turned up nothing useful.

I believe the Wing is soon to be undergoing a facelift and the cabanas might not be available(/exist) after that.

Could well be SIN/LHR/LAX soon with only the 8 A380s offering it once the 747 refurb is done/744s retired.

Soon to be the 388 routes only as most of the 744's are to be retired with the remainder having J/W/Y classes only.

QF11 to LAX, QF31 to SIN/LHR.

ex MEL: QF93 to LAX and QF9 to SIN/LHR.
