Qantas Sydney First Class Lounge

Soon to be the 388 routes only as most of the 744's are to be retired with the remainder having J/W/Y classes only.

QF11 to LAX, QF31 to SIN/LHR.

ex MEL: QF93 to LAX and QF9 to SIN/LHR.

Does that mean QF1 is to be no more? :-|

I may have imagined this, but I thought QF31/32 was being retired and renumbered QF1/2 now that the BKK-LHR flight was gone?

It wasn't a dream - more of a nightmare, but yes QF31/32 is gone from March 2012 being replaced by QF1/2 (much to my dismay on the QF1/2 schedule rather than the popular and profitable QF31/32 schedule). The result being there are no midday departures ex LHR, no morning departures ex SIN, and no evening arrivals back into SYD (a perfect arrival time to avoid jet-lag IMHO).

I'm looking forward to VA pairing with SQ as they do have flights that better suit my schedule preferences.

Nup, you did not imagine it; I was trying to save a few keystrokes ..

However, the point still remains ...

Coming back LHR-HKG in first on CX252 so may get two bites at that cherry!
Then home HKG-SYD a few days later on VA upper class so should get a good exposure of what the various carriers offer in one return flight!

If stopping over in HKG you won't (At least not easily) get access to the Wing.
However you will have access to the Arrival - a small lounge with a good shower and some decent food (no alcohol) - great if you arrive early morning and may not have immediate lounge access.
Is located pretty much underneath the railway line when you exit the main terminal via the main middle exit.

I guess if you book two legs separately you may have to check in again? Go through customs mid-trip? I don't fly international enough to know...

Nope, very rarely does one have to ever collect bags and check-in again. Most airlines, even if they are not alliance partners etc will happily check bags all the way through even on different airlines. Some will allow another airline to issue their boarding passes, if not then there are boarding pass collection points on the airside of airports. In this case however it seems the poster is flying Qantas all the way, so bags will be through checked and boarding passes issued in Sydney.

So this is to answer the question I have seen posted, as to whether one can gain access to the first class lounge if the immediate leg is not on first class, it seems you can, as long as they charged you the full 192k points (she checked)

Interesting. This isn't a written rule of lounge access, but is something for people to keep in mind.

And yes, the way the QF site prices "certain" awards is a little disappointing.

Note that Qantas introduced a policy a year or two ago that they will only interline checked baggage if:

  1. Travel is all on the one ticket, or
  2. The subsequent carrier is a member of oneworld.

Since when? Never had an issue with them through checking on different tickets, well from Canberra anyway. My most recent trip in this category (admitingly back in 2006) was CBR-SYD-SIN on Qantas, then SQ return to Hanoi, with the SQ flight being on a different booking and ticket. Qantas through checked bag to Hanoi, and I collected my SQ boarding pass to Hanoi in the transfer area in Singapore.

It started around a year ago. Here's a link to a thread on the topic: http://www.australianfrequentflyer....ram/qf-no-longer-interline-through-26031.html

BTW, it's similar to policies from other airlines - BA has a very similar one for example.

Landed in HK and tried to go to the Wing but it is under renovation so mostly closed - the whole end bit is closed off both up in first and next level down in business.

So limited service at the Wing so went to Qantas first class lounge and finally managed to get a shower so feel human again, although the Qantas HK first class lounge is nothing like the Sydney one... :(

Still, did the job so I am not complaining, just posting so people know that the Wing has been clipped for awhile...

Depending on timeframes, the Pier CX lounge should be available - decent walk though ...

I believe the First Class part of the wing is still open¹ - the "end bit" is the Business class lounge.

You may need to access it from the same level as the Qantas First Class lounge

¹ It will close Q1 year (http://www.cathaypacific.com/cpa/en_TW/atairport/hklounge_wing)

The booking engines will sometimes throw up mixed class options if it can't get the preferred class all the way - it is fairly clear. but thems the rules.
At least you get FL access and a long F leg.

Its those who book BNE-SYD-LAX in a mixed J/Y class that are really peeved.

And sometimes people do it deliberately - my father burnt points for an F Qantas oneworld award so that my mother could fly F on AA (he was on a DCIRC) and yet could only get J on the SYD-HKG and LAX-SYD legs - only F flown was on AA!
I'm wondering if you try and do the same award bookings over the phone rather than online, do you avoid the situation for example with the BNE-SYD-LAX where SYD to LAX is in Y. ie does a phone booking ensure you get to travel J all the way?

Good to know as my work is about to book me a flight that will involve two carriers (QF and SQ again) and normally they buy as two separate tickets.
The link to the FAQs in Post #1 above is very useful when trying to work it all out.

Could not be further from the truth.

The First Class Lounge is nice and I would route a flight via SYD/MEL to go and visit but I would not go out of my way to visit it if I did not need to go anywhere. I certainly would not pay First Class airfare or FF points to visit it....

I wouldn't pay F class airfare just to visit it (it's nice, but not $15,000 worth nice) , but I would visit it for the sake of visiting it on a JQ SYD-MEL cheapy or a QF SYD-BNE not quite so cheapy, especially when there are 20 other AFFer's there...
