Condolences on losing your father.
And again thanks for sharing the experience with QF.

On a personal note I do hope when my time comes it is quick and that I am doing something I love which obviously would involve travel as long as it doesn't inconvenience others.
I would much prefer my family remembers me as still active and travelling rather than as an invalid.

All the best swanning_it.
Keep the good memories and that may make the coming weeks a little easier.

thanks very much for taking the time to write this swanning_it. I feel for you and your family, and send my condolences.

It was very nice to hear that Qantas and the other organisations you and your mother dealt with that day were so good to you... thanks again

Swanning_it, wishing you and your family the best in these hard times. I'm sorry for your loss. Your post was touching it just about brought tears to my eyes, thank you so much for sharing.

Ian, sincere condolences from Mrs Major and I, and what a great innings.

An impressive effort from QF and an impressive post from you...thanks for sharing

So sorry to hear of your loss Ian.
My thoughts on the actions of QF and the tour company are more than covered by everything posted above.
It's a truly humbling experience of corporate kindness and thankyou for sharing it with us.

Deepest condolences Ian at such a sad time, it was wonderful though that Qantas and its staff all rallied around to assist. 12 years ago I was in NYC when my Mum had a heart attack and I had to get back to Melbourne quickly and can remember that Qantas and especially a CSM on the flight were very kind, she luckily survived but it was a very emotional time. I wish you and your family and your lovely Mum all the very best in the tough weeks and months ahead.

Very sad occasion. Condolences to your mum, you & the family.

Your post is a beautiful description of what is good in this world.

+1 Also very sorry to hear of your loss, but nice that qantas managed this so sensitively. Best regards Skip.

Sincere condolences from our family. The next year will be hard for your mother as she learns to live without a life long partner - I am sure she will have caring support from you.

When Qantas was Govt owned this was part of what they did - good to see it still happening and them going "above and beyond".

Wow. Thanks everyone for your "likes" and posts of support and condolances. I must admit to feeling somewhat overwhelmed by your comments and I'm so glad everyone has been able to recognise a great effort from QF. I, as well as anyone, knows how easy it is to criticise and the praise is sometimes left behind. I was adament I wouldn't let such warm service from QF go without a public thank you. I do get a bit jaded at times and I can say the service we received really boosted my airline tolerance from a dim flicker to a warm bright glow. My faith in the service part of this industry has certainly been reinvigorated.

I'll show Mum these comments in the next few days (she doesn't use computers either and email is a four letter word) and I've no doubt all your thoughts will be so very much appreciated. Thank you everyone.

Condolences to you and your family swanning it.
last year my father also unexpectedly passed away, at the time my sister and her family were in Fiji on the first ever overseas trip. My sister lives in Townsville so her flights had been through Brisbane, after a quick call qantas arranged for my sister, husband and two children to fly from nadi to Sydney and then also arranged for the return flight to Townsville two weeks later, all as part of the service,(and in the busy school holiday period)
Like you, qantas went out of their way to make a stressful experience bearable, it is nice to see a compassionate side to such a large company.

thinking of you.

Like so many people on this forum, my thoughts & feelings are with you. I take my hat off to you for taking the time in writing such a detailed diary of the events that have occurred & how compassionate all the organisations you mentioned looked after your mum.

Sad for your loss swanning_it. QF were able to help me get to the UK for grandmother's funeral after she was run over (age 88) - holding award flights until I had chance to move points from Amex and more recently sorting flights when my needed to be put down recently - a still great and human side to the company.

Ian, I was very touched by your post. Last week was 21 years since my beloved husband died and I couldn't help but empathize with your Mum. I agree with other posts what a blessing your parents were together doing something they obviously enjoyed. Thank you for telling the story of how many people and organizations allowed their compassion and humanity to shine through in such a traumatic and sad time. What a testimony.
Your Mum and family are in my prayers.

My first reaction was what an amazing story, in a strange sort of way.
I really feet happy after reading the OP, but then when I think about the crux of the story, you lost your father, and for that I very sad for your loss.
On the other hand, such a wonderful story, the way you described the events almost sounds like you are content (that's really not the right word I know) with the events of the last few days, which I think is a great thing.

When loved ones pass it really is hard in so many ways. When this has happened to me I've always tried to celebrate their time with us, and it seems you have/are doing the same.

My condolences for your loss.
Your father sounds like a great adventurer.

The compassion and assistance showed by all involved brings a tear to my eye.

Lovely story re QF, thanks for sharing. Lots of thoughts and prayers with you and especially your beautiful Mum at what must be a time of such sorrow.
