Alan Joyce has just announced a new SYD-DEL route will begin on 6 December 2021. Flights will operate via Darwin outbound, and non-stop from DEL to SYD inbound using A330s.

Flights will be 3x weekly initially, increasing to daily by the end of the year.

Sorry, I thought Qantas International didn't have enough metal to fly all their previously announced routes. That's one of the reasons the A330s have to be used to fly BNE-SFO and BNE-LAX, rather than the 787s.

Unless of course, the A380s are being returned much earlier than previously announced (which is highly doubtful).

One A380 arriving back on 25/12 and will be used for training. Second A380 early next year.

AJ said A380 flights to LA will start in April '22.

Just thinking about this further.

Qantas has about 28 A330s. If they can fly BNE to USA, they can probably fly DRW-DEL.

So there are probably enough idle aircraft around to service this route.

The press release confirms it will be A330s. SYD-DRW-DEL on the outbound, DEL-SYD non-stop on the return.

Joyce is also asking Boeing to speed up the release of three 787s currently stored in desert.
He's anticipating a huge jump in pax wanting to fly saying he plans 120% of pre-covid domestic flights by April.

Joyce said the first A380 will land in SYD on Christmas Day. Daily A380 service SYD-LAX to start in April, saying that only a few months ago the plan was that the A380s would stay grounded till end 2023.

Probably for government to government traffic… Australia is busy building a relationship with India from a strategic perspective

Where ya gonna go? Are ya gonna go to India?!
Think about it a bit. The pent up repatriation demand back to Oz and the huge family reunion market I think secured this route - for now.

And yes, i'd love to go back to India, in due course.

This is similar to what they flew to BOM with A330. I did that flight in 2006, out via DRW direct return.
In 2005, it was direct in both directions on a B747.
QF123/4. I was living in Darwin at the time and used it to get to LHR once, connecting to a BA flight from BOM.

Another time I used the SYD-DRW international leg to connect from LAX which meant I could clear customs in DRW instead of SYD.

I can assure you I've thought about more than some, including while in Mumbai a month or so ago:

I got the joke even if nobody else did…. Very Good!
😆

Bleah. I make a point of avoiding the QLD Premier's silly pronouncements. Much better things to do with my time 🤣
