Key points:
  • Sydney-Auckland-New York route set for take-off in June 2023.
  • Seamless connections between Australia and New York via New Zealand.
  • New lounges in Auckland, Adelaide, Rockhampton and Port Hedland.
  • Two Sydney-Auckland-New York Points Planes in the first week of flying.
Qantas will recommence flights to New York, with a new service from Australia to the Big Apple via Auckland from 14 June next year*.

Assuming/guessing the AKL-JFK sector is probably operated by the New Zealand based Jetconnect crew?

Fascinating, very interesting alternative to restarting LAX-JFK. I wonder what connections this opens up for PER (etc) based travellers instead of DOM>INT transfer in MEL, SYD or BNE.

Not the most direct route but neither is MEL/SYD-PER-LHR/FCO.

But if the connections line up, it’s probably a compelling option.

Plenty of U class / business reward for the entirity of QF3/4 from Sydney. However, none available for AKL-NYC by itself

It was the same when QF flew from AKL-LAX. NZers forced to go via Oz when using points, at significant extra cost in time and points.

I remember that with QF25/26 yeah. Absolute pain. Interestingly some D/I fares available, but not significantly cheaper than NZ in all honesty at this stage

Looks like 10980 NZD for the 90 day adv purchase I fare on the direct route … compared with 8760NZD for AKL-SYD-LAX/DF—NYC

quite a significantly premium and higher than the NZ lead in J business fare I believe

Does bypass the LAX immigration arrival experience…

To be replaced by JFK.....

Although id imagine the vast majority will be ending their journey in NYC so much less of an issue

If the current schedules maintain then it opens up a lot of opportunities really since QF3 leaves Auckland around 1700 hours

From Melbourne you will have QF151 (ARR 1445)
From Brisbane you will have QF119 (ARR 1445)
The issue will be Perth since there is no PER-AKL direct this season

"Two Sydney-Auckland-New York Points Planes in the first week of flying". So to get those you need to got through SYD.

Also, I looked at June 16th as a dummy award booking.
Tried booking MEL-JFK. Got MEL-SYD-AKL-JFK no issues.

Tried booking MEL-AKL, AKL-JFK on June 16th.
MEL-AKL is fine.
AKL-JFK is not an option. Search returns AKL-SYD-LAX-JFK

My guess is it's a temporary married segment / fifth freedom issue.

That is rather inevitable if you're flying to NYC. The AKL transit would be similar to going through somewhere like SIN etc

'Qantas currently operates six daily services to Auckland from Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne which will increase to 11 daily services when the new flight to New York launches.'

Even if PER returns the connection wouldn't work as PER is a red eye east bound.
