QF launching own credit card

Qantas has announced plans to offer its own platinum credit card, offering a high rate of points earn and exclusive travel benefits.
The card, powered by Mastercard® and issued by Citi, will be launched by the end of this financial year along with full details of features.
Announcing plans for the card at the Qantas Investor Day, CEO of Qantas Loyalty Lesley Grant said the card was a response to the strong consumer demand for points as part of everyday spending.
“Around 35 per cent of credit card spend in Australia earn Qantas Points, which shows strong interest in this type of reward but also plenty of room for growth,” said Ms Grant.
“This is a premium card aimed at people who love earning Qantas Points and who travel enough to want access to special deals on air fares and lounge access.
“Ultimately, it’s about giving customers more choice by widening the range of cards that you can earn points on and adding some unique features that only Qantas can offer,” added Ms Grant.
Ms Grant said Qantas was pleased to partner with Citi, the world’s largest issuer of credit cards, and global technology and payments leader Mastercard as Qantas Loyalty enters this new phase of growth.
The Qantas credit card is the latest in new products launched by Qantas Loyalty, including travel, health and life insurance as part of Qantas Assure. It follows on from Qantas Cash – a travel money card launched in August 2013 that has grown 17 per cent market share of this segment with 670,000 cards activated and almost $3 billion of funds loaded.
More information on the Qantas credit card will be available when applications open before the end of this financial year.

Re: QF launching own credit card

I'm still interested and glad it's going to reward with lots of points... but generally Platinum level cards are out of my reach and I'm a high-spender/big-earner of points, so I certainly hope they don't set the bar too high for entry. I'd be happy to take a reduced credit limit so long as I could successfully apply, whatever the annual fee, as I expect it will earn well. But if it's 0.5 points/$ then they can forget it :p

So note to Qantas for intro offer:
1. No annual fee first year
2. 2 x free lounges passes
3. Balance transfer 0% with 0% BT fee. 90% of max balance.
4. 100k bonus sign on points.
5. Max insurances(purchase, travel, warranty) including local rental car insurance
6. 75k salary eligible
7. Status credits going rate is 75 bonus with flight purchased?
8. ATO GETS POINTS !!!!
Did I miss something?

I've got a feeling Qantas are going to offer some vanilla (50k) sign-up bonus + average earn (0.5 ppd) but then try to sweeten it with some perks only they can offer (discounted Qantas Club, 1x free domestic upgrade for WPs etc).

Would love to be proven wrong, but I fear this will be a yawn fest. You only need to look at their other products (Qantas Cash, Assure etc) to realise they're not offering a competitive product, but instead relying on their brand.

/facetious thought/

And their actual offer will be:
1. $375 annual fee
2. Lounge "discounted" by 10% if paid on card
3. Balance transfer 5% with 2% fee
4. 10k points
5. "Special offer of Travel insurance" (ie. "standard" travel insurance that comes with many cards)
6. 100k salary
7. No SCs.

Wonder which one will be closer?

I agree here. Their health insurance is about 45% more expensive than what I currently pay.

Re: Qantas to issue own credit card

No chance of that - pre-approved credit is not permitted (not even pre-approved limit increase are allowed).

Even *invitations* to apply for a limit increase have to be after an opt-in by the consumer these days. A very good thing, I think...

Subscribing with interest. I don't see this product being too revolutionary because quite frankly qantas makes a lot from transfer partners and if this new card were significantly better, they'd be destroying their own value.
However the use of the word premium indicates to me it might be targeted to qantas customers who hold elite status already. A status credit component makes sense as a market differentiator but I can't see anyone earning gold status purely from spend (although a great idea) as it would, again, destroy value for genuine frequent flyers.
I'd like to see something different like, bonus points for CC earn depending on your FF status , or guaranteed fee waivers on x/spend or on requqlification of elite status.

Co brands make loyalty programs heaps of cash, but there are market risks to be aware of and qantas is so far highly leveraged as a transfer partner.

Be interesting to see this next "game changing" (insert whatever buzzword bingo you want - thanks dfcatch)

That just resulted in NAB continually sending me *invitations* to opt in for limit increase invitation.

Well of course, if you read carefully what most people think is a pre-approval you'll discover it in fact normally isn't.
