Qantas to Norfolk Island

And of course VIC had to make NLK a 'red' zone now, for the virtue of having a NSW postcode.
Now will have to cancel my NLK trip..
That is a level of idiocy and presumably will upset the Norfolk Islanders no end given the tent embassies and the like going on

of note, when I filled in my Queensland border form it gave me the option of NI being either NSW or, well, NI- wonder if the Vic system has the same ability?

it’s not actually part of NSW of course (legally, constitutionally, whatever) so I reckon you’d have a decent case for re entry to Vic

Regardless I couldn't fight against the big red patch on the victorian site :( 1626056960858.png

On account of me having nothing better to do today, I have emailed the administrator and also Norfolk tourism as I suspect a pincer movement is the most effective way of correcting the matter
Thanks, though I don't like the chances of VIC changing their mind, (if it's not a mistake) as I feel they're doing the whole of NSW as red zone for political purposes.

To my mind it has to be a mistake on that basis, as it’s not actually part of NSW

so lord Howe island being so classified makes a kind of sense but Norfolk less so

Norfolk Island should not even have

Exactly. They are an external territory, not part of any Australian state or territory. I guess you can say that they are more like ACT or NT.

Lord Howe Island was Orange along with the rest of NSW until last night. Whereas Norfolk was green until last night.

Please let me know if you hear anything back

There seems to be some kind of mistake given Cocos Islands and Christmas Islands both of which are also "Unincorp. Other Territories" have also been marked red but these don't have NSW postcodes and are about as far away from NSW as you can possibly get.

Given parts of the Sydney harbour and a few others areas are in NSW are officially "Unincorp. Other Territories" I suspect someone has selected all of those areas in the GIS package they use hence they've been marked red zones.

OMG you are right! I almost feel like keeping my holiday to NLK and just deal with the 14 days quarantine on return if it comes to that in the hope that this 'issue' gets fixed by the time I return.

100% it'll be fixed shortly once someone realises what they've done. However, I'd be avoiding transiting through SYD so if your NLK flights go through SYD then perhaps consider changing them to BNE.

I know there are exemptions for transit through red zones right now (as most states have exemptions except WA) however last year when MEL got worse most states scraped the ability to transit in the impacted MEL area.

Update : Just as I was typing this I realised it's even funnier than I thought... There is a link above the map that says "list of LGAs and their zones (CSV)", upon 2 seconds of inspection they've used ABS LGA's which include "No Usual address" and a few others like "Migratory - Offshore" to feed the map. No offence to VIC Public Health... but that's just amateur hour. It's blazingly obvious now this is a mistake but it's not clear how to communicate that with them. Also they've used ABS Census DataPacks for the LGA so I guess they could at least credit them as the source of their map data boundaries.

Edit 2 : Just downloaded the ABS data pack trying to figure out why they'd mark "Unincorp Other Territories" Red... because Jervis Bay is included in that "LGA". So by making Jervis Bay red they accidentally made Norfolk Island, Christmas Island and Cocos Islands red in the process.

I have raised a case with the Vic DH hotline, they will look into it and get back to me.
Somehow I don't have confidence they will fix it and get back to me before I leave.

As for flights I am going BNE on the way there, and via SYD and CBR on the way back to Melb, however I should be able to transit the red zone under current rules.

Checked VIC's map again just now still incorrect, i'm not holding out much hope.

The Vic covid line really has no clue, they just said if its on the map then it's correct, I then asked him to read out the changes from last night to me he said "red zone for all of NSW" I then said again how are islands off the coast of WA fitting that criteria..apparently my call back from my escalation will come "soon". 🤬

I have sent a followup to the interim administrator of NIRC to see if they have had any luck.
