Qantas to permanently close QF HKG lounge

No I haven't but LAX is not a major hub of a. Oneworld partner so it makes sense for QF to have a lounge.
Has AA pulled out of OneWorld or abandoned LAX as its west coast hub? I can hardly keep up with all this Covid stuff.

It's not their biggest hub but it's their main hub on the West Coast and their primary hub for Asia/Pacific flights, and they have a flagship lounge which is also very good (not quite as good as the Flounge) but I'd say better than the ow J lounge.

Point is there will always be circumstances where airlines will choose to have their own lounge. QF used to have its own lounge in DFW but now uses AA. QF still has it's own lounge in HNL and it's absolutely terrible, they'd be better sharing with AA.

Absolutely not

I thought - technically - LAX was a oneWorld lounge (jointly developed by BA/CX/QF) and operated by QF??

That said, I also seem to recall the ow CEO stating that they were looking at DME being the first ow branded lounge (again pre-COVID??) - so that makes me totally confused!!

I feel sad that Qantas will shut the hk lounge (never been myself) but I see it is not just $ saving for Qantas for doing this... i see something different but horrible for this decision... pls kindly dont push me to answer it as it is for more sinister reason than Qantas or CX (oneworld alliance either)... My own reasoning has nothing to do with Qantas or aviation industry related, and I wont blame Qantas for shutting it down...

With recent events, I think QF has worked out that there will be fewer demands to travel to HK for business, or tourism going forward. So they think they will operate fewer flights there.

I believe that the QF lounges opened before there was a terminal connector between TBIT and T4. Unsure whether the connector was considered when planning the oneworld/QF lounges.
Regardless, they’re technically different terminals so unlikely sending QF passengers to the AA lounges would have been considered acceptable.

I think it was a pretty expensive just to accommodate Qantas club passengers. There were better lounge options for First class and platinums (CX F) and for business class and golds (CX J lounges). The whole 'champagne on request for platinums' was a bit redundant when it was free pour for everyone at the CX lounges a few metres away. Did the lounge do enough to attract premium QF pax away from the CX offering?

A good question and I don't know the answer. My last visits there (2019) were typically because BA32, the A380 service to the UK, departed from gates nearby. The lounge always seemed busy until the QF flights were called. I wonder how many Gold and Platinum QF pax are savvy enough to know about the CX lounge options if they are booked on a QF flight.

I am quite sure QF has done "cross checks" on the QF lounge traffic against the charges sent by CX for QF Gold and Emerald members.

I found the lounge went through phases. Ordinary for a while, became better and then went downhill again. Sad in some ways though; I escaped from Hong Kong and arrived home the day before quarantine became a thing. HKIA was a very sad place that day, as was the QF lounge with barely a handful of people in it. I remember chatting with the bar staff and laughing that I’d see them in a few months. I guess not.

Ta for that - I was relying on a shortened version of the press release in the Australian.
In fact it's the other Chinese destination PVG which wasn't at all mentioned in the QF press release...

Its not always about being savvy. A vast majority of people just don’t care and don’t belong on AFF :)

Many QFF Gold and Platinum level members do.

As a % of the total member population it would be minuscule. The point being many just don’t care regardless of status like my boss who is CL/P1 x 10 and flies more than anyone on here - just walks to the nearest lounge, grabs a whiskey and makes some calls :)
