Qantas to Remove Domestic Boarding Pass Printing from Kiosks

QF actually have something like this at Hobart that I noticed when I was there in Dec 2020. Slim touch screen kiosks that printed bag tags only.

Edit: You can see it at the 55 second mark in this YouTube video next to entrance of the economy queue.

Wonder if this is what they are deploying?
Nothing to do with the actual video but the pax had a printed BP ;)

I think on this thread, or on another, printing of BP at the lounge is also not available.
To get into the lounge, you must have linked a lounge pass to the booking, prior to getting to the gate of the lounge or you will hold others behind you up.
"Ideally", when you get to the door of the lounge, they will scan your BP already as you enter, or if you are a QP member, your QP card will be scanned.
Since QFF members can only link lounge passes to bookings and QFF members either have a card, or barcode on their phone, they can scan the barcode at lounge entry - this brings up the appropriate booking for the lounge agents (I did this a couple of weeks ago in SYD for reasons). So in this case a QFF membership barcode should be enough, though I agree this would hold up things a bit at the lounge entry - specially if one then requests a BP be printed.

now of course QF have not sent real cards out for awhile (except for QF Money cards and those attaining higher status) and they probably will phase them out entirely at some point it would seem so having a physical card/barcode could be an issue for the non digital natives (but then again, they wouldn't be linking lounge invites to bookings if they were not using technology in some form or other to access the website so....)

The last few weeks, nearly every time I visit the QF J lounge in CBR with an app boarding pass, they print it anyway without prompting!!

and IIRC don't the current kiosks allow for irrops? Maybe I am imagining it but I feel almost certain there have been times the kiosk has allowed for a flow forward situation. I know the app does this now

Yep when bad weather in MEL I have been offered via the self service kiosk a choice of earlier flights even when I haven't had a flex ticket.

Wonder if they would go as far as take away the bar code on the back of our QTMCs as ours expire.
Mine got an expiry date of 2027!!!, don't ask me why.
Probably, when my card starts to fall apart in the next few years, I might need a new QTMC.
The edges plastic on the side is starting to fray.

So, do they want us to download the app and check in that way for QFd flights?
Or do they want us to to go to their website, enter our QFF PNR and do check in there.
Or do they want us to be reminded, "you have a flight in 24 hours, please check in now".
Or do they want to do auto check in for our QFd flight.
Would be horrible if we have done OLCI, but then for some reason, at the gate, the red light keeps blinking.
Worst, is this, "we are not able to check you in!".

If we were starting this airline process again today without the history of BP....why even have "check-in" for seats anyway? That can be handled in the ticket sale process.

At boarding, scan your emailed (or printed) ticket/voucher that said you booked the flight and shows the seat . might be a stretch too far.

For checking baggage, still need some process to give the luggage the best chance of getting to its destination.

I remember from years ago, when we used to have that carbon paper ticket for airlines where they tore off each piece in the process of flying.
Had to take care not to loose the left over counteerfoils.
That last page of the tear off had the info of the flights.
Hand written by ta then computerized dot matrix printed.
Them were the good old days.
Non fade now like the BP we have now on thermal paper.

Some WOAG fares don't allow OLCI so this is going to be a PITA 🙄
Not quite. All WOAG fares allow OLCI.

The problem arises when the next flight in the PNR is not QF, and departs within 24hrs (IIRC).
Amadeus/QF will attempt through check-in, even if there is no IATCI (inter airline through check-in) agreement. (VA/ZL etc)
Been told, the issue has been reported to QF.

That made me think of all the times I was on charter flights and carried my bag out and left it near baggage door for the pilot to stow (they never liked over-enthusiastic amateurs actually placing them in the compartment). Never had any left behind 😁

Can assure you that has not been my experience, at all, for the last several years.

Airlines won't be able to track oversold seats if they do that, I guess?

Would you look at that. My cash fare MEL to SYD doesn't support OLCI for some reason all of a sudden. I can pick seats fine, my card was charged correctly, and I even have the e-ticket. Guess I'll see what happens at the airport tomorrow. I assume I will end up needing to go to a manned ticket counter.

That message is all too familiar to me ......
