Qantas Upgrades - Successes or Failures (post results)

After reading some of the experiences here, I suspect that my upgrade request on QF38 SIN to MEL in early Jan 2025 as a lowly Bronze (Saver fare), is highly futile

Re-reading the terms and conditions about the "Register me for an upgrade at the airport", the first bullet point mentions "may not be able to use some of the benefits such as additional baggage allowance or lounge access" - I've already linked a lounge invitation to my booking, so I assume that even if not successful for an upgrade (or even if), that I'd still be able to use the QIBL in Changi?

Correct. ‘The benefits’ mentioned are those in relation to the upgrade. Your lounge pass is separate to that and can still be used, subject to the terms and conditions of the lounge pass.

Business class benefits such as additional baggage, priority chicken and lounge access obviously won’t be applicable if you don’t get upgraded until the gate (or unless you have them by some other means such as qantas club membership or status)

Success from FlexY > J on QF11 as WP. Notified around T-60.
Mustn’t be a heavily loaded flight, with EF still showing I9 after the latest round of upgrades.

Go to My Bookings which should list your upcoming flight, hit the upgrade button and then cancel.

Hmm, I thought about that but was worried they'd think I was trying to cancel my entire flight. I've read a few stories about communication problems with support.

Yes, I believe it is only possible up until 24 hours prior (?), so presumably if you were checked in it was too late for that and you would need to call up to see if it could still be done. EDIT: Here's the details. The 24 hour window does play into it, but not in terms of ability to cancel, at least not in all scenarios:

Will I be charged if I cancel my Classic Upgrade Reward?​

You may cancel an unconfirmed request for an upgrade without forfeiting your Qantas Points at any time prior to the scheduled flight departure.

Should your upgrade request be confirmed and you choose to cancel your upgrade request more than 24 hours before the scheduled flight departure, your Classic Upgrade Reward will be refunded subject to a 5,000 points cancellation fee.

If you cancel your upgrade request or fail to board a flight for which you have redeemed points for a Classic Upgrade Reward within 24 hours of the scheduled flight departure, you'll forfeit the points used and a seat may no longer be available in your original booked class.

Booked QF1 SYD-LHR for my daughter on the weekend, 24 hours prior to departure and immediately submitted upgrade request Y-J with fall back PE and gate upgrade etc.
Flight zeroed out F/J/PE.
No luck ex-SYD but I logged onto my QFF midway through that flight to see the points upgrade deduction for SIN-LHR !!!
Very grateful and happy daughter arriving in SIN to see my message. Nothing was showing on her QF App.
Checked with the lounge staff and BP reissued for J

My personal favourite with this used to be when the rejection SMS inevitably came through and they had thoughtfully moved you from a nice window seat near the front of economy to the middle seat on the 2nd to last row of a 3:4:3 configuration aircraft.

So not only were you not flying in Business, but you got to enjoy literally the worst seat on the plane instead!

No - won't make a difference; go ahead and check in when it opens and get yourself the best seat you can. 3 J seats still for sale on that one, too... but Y looks very busy, so more upgrades will be processed, and I don't like your chances again, sorry
