Qantas Upgrades - Successes or Failures (post results)

EF fare bucket availability won’t tell you much about J availability, the J seat map will indicate more.

FWIW I’ve never had success upgrading SYD-LHR on QF1 or vv on QF2. But several such between SYD-SIN, and back in the day SYD-DXB and DXB-LHR. I’ve only ever tried upgrading one cabin at a time.

The seat map will only show you how many people have chosen a seat. So if there are nine empty seat showing, the cabin could be fully sold. If EF shows J9 there are at least nine J seats available.

My bad, I meant the seat map will give an indication of how full the flight is, of course allowing for those with no seat selection.

No infallible tools, if EF shows J9 there are at least 9 seats the airline is willing to sell on the flight, not quite the same thing as number of seats available at the time.

Here’s a little win: an op-up after a successful points upgrade

QF141 SYD-AKL on 4 Jan. WP on a Flexi Y so requested PE to try it out on the 787 as only 4000 points. Confirmed at T-60 then today (day before flight) I check my app and see I’m now in 3A with a Business mobile boarding pass. First op up on QF (flight is looking very oversold)

Flying BNE-SYD-HNL on Monday. Upgrade in for both (WP).

J is sold out for SYD-HNL so no chance. BNE-SYD was requested and randomly a few days ago that upgrade cleared (well before the 24-48h timeframe) giving me the last J seat - J is now sold out for this flight also.

Very, very strange - I couldn’t really care less either way about the short flight being upgraded. I wonder if someone could see that I’m not going to get SYD-HNL so gave me this as a consolation prize?

I’m much more excited about the blocked seat next to me (SYD-HNL) which is still there inside T-48.

Domestic upgrades for WP clear at T-72 (subject to availability) so nothing strange about that one.

It cleared 10 days before (T-240) and gave me the last seat. in my experience they usually save 2 J seats until the day of departure. I think that’s pretty strange.

It is my understanding that requests are also based on time of request, e.g. all things being equal if 2 travellers with the same status request an upgrade on the same flight and only one seat is available the person that put in the request first gets it. Further, in my experience when a P1 (not traveling) puts in a request for a family member, the traveller goes to the front of the upgrade line based on their status and is upgraded when their tier level is assessed. e.g. MrsM (WP) upgrades tend to come through 24-48 hours out.

From recollection, if I am in the booking then all upgrades normally release 7 days out. I It has been a while since I have done this, so the rules may have been enhanced.
Since you are WP you get enhanced a better priority for upgrades.

I do not believe time of request is much of a factor these days (it was documented as being so more than a decade ago, but that is no more) - see this long running thread for more (read it all for best consideration):

Upgraded from business to first on QF36 SIN-MEL on 4 Jan. Upgrade confirmation SMS came through at 60h 5m before departure.

Upgraded at the gate on QF127 today SYD-HKG, from Y to W. Non-refurbished A380, booked on a flexi fare. As WP, I earned 10,400 points and the upgrade cost 10,900 , so almost break even - that's kinda nice! This time the final manifest had me listed correctly (one previous time I had a late upgrade, the CSM came around and greeted me by the name of some other passenger whose place I had taken).

My partner and I upgraded from flex Y to J on QF20 a full 7 days before my flight - as P1 that has never happened to me so far out. All my upgrade requests that have been successful have been T-24hrs so much so that I thought this was P1 standard regardless of the published benefit.

Domestic upgrades are not limited to a time window but when QF make U available.

It is not like the international system at all except that, one presumes, once U is available waitlisted upgrade requests will be processed in order of status.

Hoping for last minute success tonight HKG - MEL; Currently T-9 and no luck yet on Flex Y - W/J as SG. QF30 was cancelled yesterday, so perhaps more pax to accommodate.

Good luck. Potentially 2x pax from W moved up to J and then 2x pax for Y to W. Plus maybe no-shows and misconnects.

Success on tomorrow's QF81 out of SYD to SIN for this solo flyer.
Y (Saver) to J; Notified at T-28. Had been showing J4 C0 D0 I0 for a few days in EF.

Cheers,
Matt.

Unsuccessful for Flex Y to J upgrade request for QF2 as WP. Advised at T-10. And lost the blocked out seat next to me, according to EF :-(
Had been showing on EF as F5 A5 J9 C9 D0 I0 W6 R0 T0 Y9 B9 H9 K9 M9 L9 V0 up until yesterday morning. Although there are still two sreats in J so maybe I'll get the happy beep on boarding

21/12/19 QF27 SYD to SCL successful upgrade from PE to J for two people. Notified T-28.

11/1/20 QF28 SCL to SYD unsuccessful Y to J upgrade for two people (upgrade to PE instead). Notified T-21.

I’m gold and wife is bronze.

Mr FM got an upgrade, award Y to J for cbr-Mel QF855 on Tuesday (T-72). Ms FM and I already had “ instant” upgrades which we got last year. She and I already have our upgrades for coming back on Thursday so hoping he gets another one. J is generally quite empty middle of the day for the CBR-MEL run, esp if parliament isn’t sitting.
