Qantas Upgrades - Successes or Failures (post results)

Might be released, might not. You do see vacant J seats even with somewhat fuller Y cabins. So, you can hope for the release but it's far from guaranteed.
So I had to change my inbound flight from MEL to SYD to the night before on 27/10. I requested upgrade to business and got the confirmation instantly YAY.

It's another 20 days to go for the outbound flight SYD to MEL. I've put in the upgrade request already. Hopefully the flight stays light and I'll get an upgrade confirmation soon :D

I seem to recall something about domestic QF upgrades being processed immediately, is that only pending U availability?

It was the case that domestic upgrades were processed immediately if there was U availability, and later if not. But from other posts here this appears to have been "enhanced" at least for some flights, particularly A330's x-PER. Officially, it's only advertised that upgrades are processed around T-72 for P1 and WP, and T-24 for everyone else. See https://www.qantas.com/au/en/frequent-flyer/use-points/classic-upgrade-rewards.html

Oh, thanks. Yes the coast to coast A330 is definitely a higher value upgrade to have.

It hasn’t been enhanced.
Just awful info on the website.
Domestic Upgrades are still confirmed immediately if there is availability.

16.2 Classic Upgrade Rewards - for travel only within Australia (on flights QF400 and above and travel on domestic legs of flights QF1-299 and, effective 27 March 2022, QF350-389)

16.2.1 Classic Upgrade Rewards can be requested for a specific flight and date between 353 days and 10 hours prior to scheduled departure of the flight. The awarding of Classic Upgrade Rewards is subject to availability at the time of request. If a Classic Upgrade Reward is available at the time of request, it will be confirmed immediately and Qantas Points will be deducted from the Member's account.

The relevant words being "if available". Nearer the departure date, and if there are seats unsold, a few more might make their way into reward classification. Hence later notification. At least, that is my interpretation.

Yes that’s correct. If U is available (a regular Domestic Business Class Award) at the time of you requesting the upgrade then it will get confirmed immediately and points deducted.
It’s easy to check this online before buying your ticket.

Further U seats may get released closer to departure.

As is the B787. ;)

I am currently batting 6 from 6 with two more opportunties to come later this month. With 42 J seats to sell on each flight, it appears to be one of the easiest, and best value, domestic upgrades on QF.

QFF Silver on QF10 PER-PER discount Y-to-J flying 7/10 classic upgrade 27,200 points confirmed at T-28

22(!) J seats to choose from.

QF81 SYD-SIN, Y to J, notified at T-72hours and 7 minutes. Flight was showing J8C8D3I2 (haven't seen "I" class in a while!). I imagine it would have cleared at T-7days, but it wasn't ticketed yet back then.

QFF Silver on QF10 PER-MEL discount Y-to-J flying 16/10 classic upgrade 27,200 points confirmed at T-28

Observation: Just 3 J seats for me to choose from for this flight - an amazingly large reduction compared to my experiences over the last 6 weeks, where there's been 10-20 available on each flight

BNE-ADL in about a month's time. Y-J, confirmed immediately after booking. Rtn flight a couple of days later is waitlisted.

I'm back to Bronze but somehow not bothered. I feel as though the last couple of years have put chasing status in perspective.
