Qantas welcomes AA to SYD

I wonder why would Qantas welcome a direct competitor? I find it hard to believe they will truly welcome that.
Because AA and QF are not competitors. They have a joint business agreement, codeshare on each others flights and will most likely be profit sharing on the AA/QF transpac flights (just as IB/AA/BA do transatlantic).
There might be 5 airlines flying between Australia and the US mainland now (QF, UA, VA, DL, AA - AC and HA if you add YVR and HNL), but it's only really 3 with the QF/AA and VA/DL JBVs.

Nice to see that QF are still friendly with at least one OW airline!
Well, they are friendly with LAN and JAL and would likely have a closer partnership with JAL if they were allowed to - perhaps they'll be allowed to once ANA reenters the Australian market.
They were friendly with BA until a few months before the change in JV to EK.
I have no idea what happened with CX. They've had issues since even before the JQ HK attempt.
They were somewhat friendly with MH - QF sponsored MH into oneworld - they had a falling out when MH refused to help with the planned "RedQ" Asian based premium airline QF wanted to start.

American Airlines are flying their flagship B777 to SYD on 13 November, ahead of the inaugural flight SYD/LAX in December.

QANTAS WELCOMES AMERICAN AIRLINES FLAGSHIP BOEING 777-300ER TO SYDNEY AHEAD OF INAUGURAL DECEMBER SYDNEY-LOS ANGELES FLIGHT - Qantas News Room

Newsflash!

American Airlines to fly-over Sydney Harbour, followed by joint CEO press conference Qantas’ Hangar 96!

Here's some details about the flyover:

Date:
Friday 13[SUP]th[/SUP] November 2015

Time:
Approximately 8:15am (suggest being in position from 8am)

Flight plan:
The current flight path takes the aircraft on a route from east to west flying over the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Traffic permitting, the Captain will then make a 180 degree left turn around and come back west to east before heading to Sydney International Airport. Flying at 1800 feet.

Was a bit of a let down unfortunately...

Aircraft flew south over Gladesville Bridge at 3000ft but then continued down to RNP coming down to 1800ft and did a flyover of 34L before turning right and flying over the bridge west to east at 1800ft at about 8.35am. Tracked out over the heads, up to 3000ft, then headed south to of the airport, couple of circles then landed on 34L around 9am.

Having a friend who recently flew from MEL to the USA and automatically booked QF (and who paid over the odds in my view for doing so), it may be wise for prospective passengers who have a choice (that is, who are not restricted by corporate travel agencies) to remember that DL, NZ and UA are among other options that may have a very competitive offering and sometimes may be on sale.

QF may be the market leader on this route (about the only one internationally where that is the case) and have the largest market share but by shopping around, some good deals or interesting intermediate destinations if one has the time can be available.

One can also fly via Fiji, Hawaii, Manila, Seoul, Singapore or Tokyo to name a few - a year ago I came across someone in Manila who was using PR in business class and who at the time, having completed his first leg, was quite satisfied although that would be among the slowest ways to do it. Not everyone is in a hurry to get to their destination, and stopping off at a beach for three days in Fiji, Hawaii or Philippines, or shopping in Singapore may suit a minority of travellers.
