QF doesn't want to make PAX take a bus from T3/T4 to T1 to transfer from a domestic sector to the international sector.
And they aren't ready to move their domestic operations from T3/T4 to T1 which frankly isn't ready for them anyway.

Once I had to take a cab between the terminals and it cost like $30 or something. Ridiculous.

Actually that is an awesome idea. And if you fly on the QF numbers you get more SCs because the flight numbers change? I assume they do?

I've done that too and think it is a great option, particularly on the way back

you can fly EK metal on QF code and get SC and points. When you make a multi-city booking on the QF website you need to look at the results for each leg and then look at "other flights" (or similar option for each leg) as by default the QF website will try and put you on a QF metal flight. You can see the airline logo next to the flight Sometimes you also save money using an EK plane vs. QF plane. Just be careful with dates and times, e.g. Saturday 00:30 SIN to DXB is really Friday late night, so don't show up in SIN or DXB on the wrong day

Not sure if the amount of SCs you get for 3 flights is more or less or the same as using QF's 2 flights, you'd have to check.

One thing I noticed is to some EU destinations the EK flight does not have a QF code when booking on the QF website, not sure what happens there in terms of SC when booking through QF.

You can also get rewards seats on EK through QF, which may be interesting as well.

Or have a look at Finnair (also available on the QF site as alternative I think), they do a lot of EU destinations, and you get 2 flights from SIN: SIN-HEL, and then HEL-whichever capital you're going to.

Interestingly I just made a booking on QF9 because I would like the opportunity to try out the F lounge in MEL on my way back from an upcoming trip to SYD.
I booked using a gift voucher for reasons including avoiding the CC fee and there were no flashing neon red and yellow warnings about the international terminals, the need for identification or the additional restrictions on carry on luggage including LAGS. Which raises the possibility that some less informed PAX who books this flight with a gift voucher could rock up at the airport for this flight and be in for a nasty surprise!

Now the important question - how long should I allow myself to enjoy the F lounge? 3 hours?

Yes, it is still international. The flight number is QF9 and there is a note on the e-ticket saying "Your domestic flight forms part of an international flight. This means international travel requirements apply."

Are you sure you aren't booked on QF777 MEL-PER connecting to QF9? Current timetable has 789 operating QF9 every day in Aug 20.

No, the e-ticket definitely says "Airbus Industrie A330".

Oh yeah.... another flaw in their system.
Also, if you book via the Biz Rewards portal... also a different experience. And also on Expedia it doesn't mention it.... maybe if you go all the way to the end of checkout it might say something, but by then it is too late yeah?

But this can be tricky.... I know that at SYD I have arrived super early for my flight and they check me in anyway as the counters are OPEN pretty much all day.

However, even though MEL is apparently on track to be Australia's "#1 Best Big City!", its airport is certainly not trying to match that status. Keep in mind this may have changed, but last year (I think) I was on an afternoon flight to AKL, and finished up at work early, so thought I'd head into the airport early to guzzle some more free booze.... well you can imagine my shock when I arrived at the curbside F check-in and it was CLOSED!!!!

So I had to stand outside like a peasant, puffing away on a ciggie, until the clock reached EXACTLY 3 hrs before the next departure. There seems to be a gap in their flight schedule where there is a period greater than 3 hours between departures.... that is the only thing I would keep in mind!

I should be checked through from SYD so this won't be an issue.
However as QF don't seem to sell QF9 as part of a domestic itinerary I do have SYD-MEL and MEL-PER on different bookings.
But I don't think QF have stopped booking through on their own flights yet!

They must be planning unusual aircraft movements around that date.
