QF and Turkish luggage

Just in case anyone does this in the future, as expected at checkin in Sydney they didn't check it all the way because it was on separate ticket, but on the way back Turkish just added the QF flight number on the tag and the bags made it to Sydney.

Interesting that Turkish did it but Qantas didn't. I guess it just proves it doesn't really matter and more a policy thing.

Interesting. I'm wanting to do this. I'll have a flight from IST to SIN with a 110 minute connection to PER on QF, on separate tickets. The first TK phone agent I spoke to said fine, no problem. The next two said no, not on separate tickets.

There appears to be nothing on the TK website.

I now have to decide whether to overnight in SIN on the return or hope for the best and try to get my bag through checked when I check-in at IST.

Any thoughts?

Any thoughts? I'd be happy to sign a waiver against TK or QF not having my bags delivered on my flight in PER. It's my home port so I'm not going to need anything. I just don't want to have to delay my return to Australia by another 24 hours.

Even if a TK phone agent says that they will interline bags on separate tickets, the only thing that matters is that the TK CSA at the airport is happy to do so.

If not, I would go asap to the transit counter airside at Changi & ask if they will retag your bags behind the scenes for your QF flight SIN/PER.

Even if you do OLCI for the QF flight your bags still need to be checked in before the flight closes.

As always you have to consider the worst case scenario which would be:

a) TK not through checking the bags
b) TK arriving late into SIN
c) Transfer desk at Changi not willing to retag your bags
d) Having to clear customs with your bags in SIN first before lodging them with QF checkin landside
e) Arriving at QF checkin to find flight is already closed for baggage acceptance
f) Not being able to travel on that flight because your bag must travel with you
g) Missing out on F Lounge experience in SIN

Bugger. It's all stacked against me.

I don't have experience with the airside transit counter and re-tagging bags. I think I'm just going to have to book for an overnight in Singapore.

Qantas used to do this. Their are risks and potential liabilities and costs associated with this. Either to reduce these liabilities and costs, QF implemented a policy a little while ago of only through checking baggage to non-one world carriers which were booked as part of the same booking (or is it same ticket?). You can only through check luggage for different bookings if all the bookings are on one world carriers.

Some airlines (eg SQ) will still through check luggage to anyone except for LCC's regardless of being on same booking or not (unless needing to be collected for customs/quarantine purposes). At the other end, there are airlines that have a tighter policy and simply will not through check luggage on different bookings, even if it is the same alliance, or in some cases even if it is different bookings on the same airline (eg NZ) .

My experience is consistent with this. On a recent SYD-IST trip via SIN using QF and TK on two separate tickets, QF denied interlining with TK when checking-in in SYD on onward leg, but TK agreed to interline with QF without problems when checking-in in IST on the return leg - and won heaps of brownie points with me.
