QF announce non-stop Perth-London B787 Services

Just had to give it a whirl, so I've included QF10 as the second last sector of my DONE4 that starts in SYD next year - the last sector of course being back to PER the day after arriving in MEL:p:D.

Were you able to book the last leg MEL-PER on QF9 as well?

QF9 is MEL-LHR, just as QF10 is LHR-MEL. That is how those flights appear when booking and on the e-ticket & itinerary. Under 'flight information' (along with est. journey time and aircraft type) it simply says 'Stopover: Perth' instead of 'non-stop'. There is no need to book the MEL-PER or PER-MEL legs separately.

Interesting that your last leg which stops in PER says "Stopover" and states the final destination as LHR, even though the ticket ends in PER.

Yes that's my coinfusion.

I read the earlier post as the DONE4 going LHR-MEL (via PER) then a booking as the last leg back to PER. Hence my QF9 question.

I don't know whether I have been unclear in my posts since the first one yesterday, but it seems to have caused some confusion. I'll try to be clearer.

I have booked a DONE4 (ie. RTW trip) next year. It commences in SYD (I'll position to SYD from PER separately), going first to S America, then N America, then Europe before I get to LHR - after using 14 of the allowable 16 sectors - in readiness to head home to PER. There are several options, but I wanted to try QF10 because it is new and novel - to make my own judgement on what it is like.

So, I have deliberately chose QF10 as my second last sector (no. 15). QF10 is fundamentally structured as a LHR-MEL flight (just as QF9 is the reverse). Despite the 'stopover' in PER, QF10 is a LHR-MEL flight counting as one sector in the DONE4. After arriving in MEL in the evening, I will stop overnight before using the 16th and last sector of my DONE4 to go MEL-PER to finish the DONE4 and return home. It's just a version of 'Why fly direct when you can connect?' ;).

I could have disembarked QF10 in PER on the way through but that would have left me with one of my 16 available sectors unused - and consequently would not have maximised my SC and points haul from the DONE4 (I typically get about 1600 SC and about 110,000 points from a DONEx).

As a long-time annual DONEx purchaser (2018 will be about number 15), I have always used the full number of sectors allowed (20 in the days of paper tickets, 16 since the advent of mandatory E-ticketing). I don't intend to start short-changing myself now!

So, that's what it was all about :).

(If anyone is wondering why I did not start to DONE4 in PER, it is not permissible to make more than one full trans-continental flight in an xONEx, so that would have cut out going all the way over to MEL and making the journey back MEL-PER part of the DONE4. I chose to position to SYD separately to begin the DONE4, but I could just as easily chosen to position separately on the MEL-PER leg.)

I understand your intention and post, maybe my post should have been a question.
What is the flight number and aircraft of your 16th segment, MEL-PER?

I know right?! Can't imagine another way to make your original question clearer short of asking for the e-ticket and itinerary.
 
I didn't attempt to choose QF9 MEL-PER because I was looking for a mid-morning flight and the 9 leaves MEL at 1515.

Just playing a dummy xONEx booking in the OW tool a moment ago and QF9 does come up as an option for the MEL-PER sector.

Yes. I was planning a DONE4 for next May and that leg turned up in the selection as my final leg.

I note that the WA Government is donating more cash to the QF cause by advertising the QF direct flight on the perimeter signage at Chelsea FC home games.

They cannot mention QF by name however due to the DL sponsorship of Chelsea...

More likely contra/cut price deal related to the cash being shipped Chelsea's way to play in Perth against Glory in the European summer. Just makes co-incidental sense to promote the direct flights.
 
I received the London on sale email this week and had a look at some dates we are interest in. It is obvious that all the "bargain" J fares are only on combinations with QF9/10. Given a fare nadir of $7.5K, and a verrryy loonng flight PER-LHR, they are wasting their marketing energy on the Oateks.
 
QF now has all four 787 aircraft it needs to do both the MEL-LAX and MEL-PER-LHR services.

Have you checked QF business fares ex-NZ to London? ;)
 
One Perth-based travel agent suggested that to make the MEL - PER - LHR route work, QF would have to charge $2000 return fares in Y: I assume he meant 'average.' It is discounting at present to around the $1250 mark if I recall, but perhaps only a few seats on some flights.

There's a lot of competition to London and travel agents claim that the market is 'soft.'
 
Are there enough toilets onboard in the business class section?
Depends what you call “enough”. From a passenger perspective there should be more toilets than what QF installed.
 
I'm interested in the meal service...QF website indicates :
Meal: Refreshment - Business , Economy , Premium Economy and then Dinner - Business , Economy , Premium Economy ?? Anyone have an thoughts
