Just to clarify, a 747 showing row 5, means it IS refurbished right? I have been a bit confused by reading some conflicting posts.

Yes thats right and there is no 5A or 5K. I think it's seatguru qantas 747 version 2

Conversely if you get J in rows 23-26 you are in unrefurb 747. The version 3 in seatguru

Seatguru version 1 retired - in the desert, sold by murky 3rd parties to Iran, or recycled into Pepsi cans

Currently have 3A and 3B selected for QF95 MEL-LAX next February, rows 15 and 16 are available on the upper deck any thoughts whether its worth selecting upper deck?
Travelling with my 18 year old son so he'd probably prefer we don't sit together.

IMO, yes. No stepping over from the window seat (exit row) ... smaller cabin feel .... won't be around for much longer :(

We've selected upper deck exit row on our QF27/28 next month. But I'm not travelling with my son ;)

Different situation but my mother was recently booked on QF128 747-service in J, and a few days before had the aircraft swapped to an A380. She's never been on one and I feel the experience would have been pretty similar had it not been for the fact I changed her seat at the last minute to 5F and she was able to try the F hard product. So in this case, the A380 was significantly better. But that's not really what the OP was getting at originally.
