Re: QF CEO speech - dom fare restrucure, profit update, RR settlement, Int Route chan

Qantas will continue to be a great international airline, with best frequent flyer program. But we'll be working with our alliances more.

A great airline it may be, but best frequent flyer program? Come on! Where are they getting these perceptions from? (Obviously not us, but it still puzzles me where they find them)

Now it seems that Joyce will be adopting a more alliances role (i.e. codeshares) rather than actually expanding QF metal operations. That in itself is a departure from good ol' days, but seeing as VA is mostly the same...

Re: QF CEO speech - dom fare restrucure, profit update, RR settlement, Int Route chan

I meant QantASIA :p

Anyway, sounds like AUG24 is D-Day for QF International. Orange paint prices expected to rise

That would be a QA word then ;)

Re: QF CEO speech - dom fare restrucure, profit update, RR settlement, Int Route chan

Alan Joyce at National Press Club:
  • Engineers are among the highest paid employees at QF.
  • Demands are out of touch with reality.
  • The pilots' union is demanding that all pilots on all QF airlines, including JQ, are paid the same wages as those on QF.
  • This would quickly send JQ out of business.
  • Need a sensible resolution with the unions.
  • Hoping commonsense can prevail but it "will have to be a discussion that recognises the real world and its imperatives".

Russell Brand just asked a question!

Re: QF CEO speech - dom fare restrucure, profit update, RR settlement, Int Route chan

Alan Joyce at National Press Club:
  • Questions, first from The Australian, asking about the ASX trading halt. Joyce's response is the halt was a result of the RR announcement and signing only at 11.30am this morning; also wanted to tell the market about the implications of the volcano.
  • Herald Sun, you said QFi isn't sustainable, can you give an indication as to what number of routes and flights will be affeced in the short-term, does this mean a move off-shore. Spoke about the successful JV with BA; looking at Asia.

Re: QF CEO speech - dom fare restrucure, profit update, RR settlement, Int Route chan

Looks like Question Time.

Although I've only had a piecemeal feed from the @AusBT Twitter stream, needless to say I'm not impressed by Joyce's rather bland and predictable speech. It really doesn't communicate that he will do anything positive about the whole situation, and just seems like a whole big blame and whine game. There wasn't anything absolutely fair that he said about QF that will remedy its current problems in an active manner.

I truly think that the only way Qantas will drive its international business back up is with ambitious investment into its product, combined with very active drives to improve its basic service (e.g. simple face-to-face interactions). This will certainly cost it money and carry financial risk, but trying to work with what you've got right now is ridiculous, and diverting the responsibility of international carriage to Jetstar is not a fix, that's just a dodge, and a degrading one to the QF image.

"Qantas wants to use satellite navigation to shorten flight paths and save tonnes of carbon emissions."

Perhaps I should withhold before jb747 comments on this, but in my immediate opinion more stupid words have not been spoken.

Use more RNAV routing rather than standard airways, easier for airlines but a lot harder for ATC to provide separation in an orderly manner, the old direct track request !

At the very least, Joyce should at least include the fact that this would save fuel, not just cut emissions, i.e. the reason is really commercial/financial/business, not CSR!

"very low fares from Jetstar"

Good points from The Age writer about SYD-centric focus.

  • "Our competitors are reconsidering their options . . ."

Well that's what competitors do... No surprises there

  • "Tomorrow we will be announcing our now domestic fare structure . . . which will give more benefit to our frequent flyers".

Don't like the sound of this, of late anything from QF which has promised "more benefit" has been bad... QF promises of good always = bad...

Let's bring up Ansett and put it in the same sentence as QF:shock:

Just a little bit of a worry...

  • "On August 24 I'll be announcing our plans for the strategic renewal of our international operations."

Here comes QF int being purely SYD \ MEL \ SIN \ LHR \ LAX... JQ will take over the rest... (I hate making airline predictions as I've had a 100% success rate with DJ\VA so far, and I don't much like my prediction)

If I was a QF shareholder, I'd be doing one of two things
1 - Doing all I could to get Joyce out of the top job...
Failing that
2 - Selling my QF shares...

Vauge statements of “good things yet to come, but will be completely different from what they are now” followed by a promise of everything will be announced shortly do not fill me with confidence.
If you are planning on doing something, announce it. If you’re not yet ready don’t say anything.

Good points from The Age writer about SYD-centric focus.

If QF must have a SYD-centric focus then at least they should focus on making the experience at SYD a lot better, including the experience for those flying in from other ports.

I suppose the other incumbent b*stard, Mac Airports, will probably prove to be a problem in this regard.

Re: QF CEO speech - dom fare restrucure, profit update, RR settlement, Int Route chan

Hmmm Aug 24 - rollback of Qantas Sale Act followed by QF metal based and crewed in SIN?

Dont you just love speculation

Re: QF CEO speech - dom fare restrucure, profit update, RR settlement, Int Route chan

It's probably more like to a train ride now, just something you've got to do.

Oh, steady on, bus ride maybe. Train ride never. :D

Re: QF CEO speech - dom fare restrucure, profit update, RR settlement, Int Route chan

Why do have this "Well that's an hour of my life down the drain" feeling :?:
Cheers

Re: QF CEO speech - dom fare restrucure, profit update, RR settlement, Int Route chan

Kind of funny how I'm reading all about this in a packed SYD T3 J Lounge and of course it's not like this was a football match or the like so no one in here is glued to a screen or crowding around a radio listening to it. Yet they have no idea what this may mean to them.

Anyway, press con is over.

Agreed, but I guess we only have to wait a day to find out.

Maybe JQ-style premium for FF points on red e-Deals sold as debundling but actually representing price hikes?

Here comes QF int being purely SYD \ MEL \ SIN \ LHR \ LAX... JQ will take over the rest... (I hate making airline predictions as I've had a 100% success rate with DJ\VA so far, and I don't much like my prediction)

Though pessimistic, you may be right. Would they lose NZ/Jetconnect too?

Would be sad to lose HKG as a QF port though, to say nothing of JFK. Wonder if the new favourite DFW would fall out too.

If I was a QF shareholder, I'd be doing one of two things
1 - Doing all I could to get Joyce out of the top job...
Failing that
2 - Selling my QF shares...

I'd have thought the smarter investors had already done the latter - especially after their interests were subordinated to those of the board and management during the great almost-sale of 2007.

If you are planning on doing something, announce it. If you’re not yet ready don’t say anything.

Yep.
