QF cough about cabin bags

Well in the US they have installed new bins to meet demand. It’s gonna be a ways off from happening here, but we can hope!

It's a welcome generational improvement that will clearly take time - but it will happen.

The US is still a basket case, and they mimic a country of entitled P1s who think they can travel with the kitchen sink.

Last week QF weighing carry on as they presented boarding passes, people were scolded if over but let on.

Perhaps the start of something bigger?

People will start checking bags in when it becomes more convenient. Having to wait 20 or 30 minutes for your bag, and potentially as much time to check in at a desk (versus checking in online in 30 seconds) is one of the reasons why people have gone HBO. The downside to HBO is you have to carry all that with you as you go to lounges and gates. It also means having to board early to ensure you get overhead locker bin space. However, the time savings between checking in at a counter and waiting for your bag at the carousel can be considerable.

Agree.

Here is a surprise, more check in staff might have a direct connection to fast aircraft turnaround.

More baggage handlers might also have a direct connection to aircraft turnaround times.

Something about wanting cake and eating it as well comes to mind.

You can check in a bag and still check-in online, takes about 60 seconds to use kiosk to print bag tags and and drop off a bag at domestic - no counter required.

imo the REAL reason more QF pax are going carry on only to avoid checking in bags is not so much the time to deliver bags at the destination - though this is a factor - but after last year's overly publicised issues, it's a lack of trust that they will get their bag at all. Probably mostly unfounded for QF dom, but there's definitely a lack of trust with QF right now. Ironically I've had my bag lost by just about every carrier BUT QF recently, but I digress lol.

I think the other issue is, as noted here, is people just trying it on and bringing So. Much. on board. I am happy QF is taking some sort of proactive effort. I mean we've all seen those pax who think a personal item in addition to a carry on is a huge duffel bag or something - honestly some people seem to be taking the p15S with what they bring on - and then lose their minds when overheads are full.

I do use the carry on limits.
Being fat some destinations overseas aren't geared to easy replacements . USA fine no issues , South Korea yeah nah I am not going to get replacements there. My carry on has two or three changes of clothing

I would like to agree with you in that regard, but from my experience, checking a bag in that way rarely occurs with Qantas, certainly not internationally and sometimes not even domestically. Remember, not every domestic airport in the QF network is set up for self bag tagging (and receiving those bags). Don't get me wrong, when I have that q-tag attached to my bag, and I'm at SYD, often it is very quick indeed to get the bag checked. But sadly many destinations I fly to on QF ain't SYD or MEL where they have such facilities.

Even in those instances, where yes I can check my bag in within 15 seconds using the Q-tag, the time waiting for the bag on the other end can vary wildly. In some instances, the bag is already waiting for me on the carousel when I arrive at the baggage claim area, in other instances I'll need to grab a coffee and take a seat.

Does having passengers check most of their bags speed up boarding and deplaning? I have no doubt about that. But again, if you think of yourself individually, saving that 15 to 20 minutes waiting for a bag makes more sense than saving 20 or 30 minutes on boarding and deplaning. Because you can feel the 15 to 20 minute wait for the bag whereas the boarding and deplaning delays have always been here and feel unavoidable (even if they are).

A dozen Krispy Kreme donuts are definitely under 10 kgs

However, now there’s a few stores here in Adelaide I don’t do that anymore

Definitely prefer to carry on
