I have a booking for two passengers as Classic Rewards business class flights. original booking is BNE-CNS-AYQ. This involves 17 hour overnight "transit" in Cairns for which I have booked a hotel. The BNE-CNS has had a minor schedule (-15 mins) and aircraft change (E190 -> B738).

However, the app is offering me other flight options in addition to the minor time change, including QF51- QF2-JQ660 BNE-SIN-SYD-AYQ, or QF51-QF292-JQ660. So with that routing, we would arrive into AYQ just a few hours later than going via CNS, and I can cancel the hotel booking and we get two QF International flights on which to enjoy the food/service/seat. Obviously it means a 3:35 hour JQ flight in economy SYD-AYQ rather than arriving on E190 in J as originally booked.

They are also offering BNE-CHC-SYD-AYQ, but not at all interested in that routing.

Would QF actually be wiling to re-route us via Singapore for a 15 min change in one segment that does not cause any misconnect issues? The extra SC and points earned as a PC+ member might be nice, and "why flight direct when you can connect" is the first thing the came to mind :).

I assume since the re-routing is being offered in the app, there should not be any change to the points, carrier charges and taxes charged, but this is Qantas so might not be a good assumption.

What would you do?

If not for the three hour JQ flight I might have gone for it.
Yep, that is my road block at this point

Also note that these option are only offered via the mobile app, the web site only shows the new flight number and time for the original routing with the 15 mins earlier flight time.

If the system is offering that as a solution, then the new routing should ticket and nothing will come of it.
From a ticketging perspective it's an INVOL Reroute and all taxes/fees would be transferred over to the new ticket and nothing additional would be collected from the passenger.

You would only earn the Original Routing SC's and points.

Edit: seems This is not the case

Is the CHC-SYD leg on the EK A380 by any chance?

Well, no - SOP is:

- If the new routing flown results in less SC than the original routing then put in a claim for ORC.
- If the new routing flown results in more SC than the original routing then do not put in a claim for ORC.

This relies on ORC being not automatic.

Would/Does that actually happen though?
From my experiences - Yes.

I have never come across any anecdote or report where an airline proactively adjusts earn in relation to ORC; it is up to the passenger to submit a claim.

Having to deal with the SYD international to domestic transfer would be a pain, especially since going to a JQ flight. If HLO, less of a hassle but you still need to make your own way between terminals.

This is a very niche situation but there's possibly something in the cabotage rules that would prohibit an international airline flying pax on a domestic itinerary? Although maybe not if booked on the QF code.

I'm fairly certain Air Canada can't fly US pax on domestic trips via Canada. Though nothing stopping you making two separate itineraries.

The plan for this trip is HLO anyway. Its only 1 night in CNS and 3 nights in AYQ. We managed HLO for 3 weeks in the USA last year, so this would be simple.

My personal take would be take up the routing via SIN. When landing back in SYD, ask at the check-in desk if you could fly-ahead/delay your flight so that you are on a QF operated flight to AYQ (assuming there is one operating at/around the times you land in SYD).

For me the routing is creative, flying via SIN to go to AYQ. I did a similar SYD to MEL via AKL, voluntarily. There was a party that I was going to in MEL and my mates wanted to try NZ wines for the party, so I booked SYD-AKL-MEL-SYD., picked a few bottles at AKL DF. It was only $150 or more expensive that SYD-MEL-SYD.

The only QF-Group flight SYD-AYQ on that day is JQ660, which is the main reason we are going via CNS ... Do I look like I fly economy?
