QF/JQ domestic flights leaving from international terminal

Hope neither of them gets cancelled.
Need to keep an eye out for this info, as you would need to go through/be escorted out via Aust incoming immi int processing.
And, no you can't use Smartgate, would need to see an ABF officer in both cases.
If your JQ flight gets cancelled when you are air-side, presumably you can stay in the Flounge longer then? Then when you are ready, advise the agent your JQ flight has been cancelled and have them escort you to dommigration?
I guess for non-WPs/WP1's not really that fantastic. Although if the price is right and flying Jetstar, it's probably quicker to access the QF J lounge this way than accessing the domestic lounges before a purely domestic JQ flight, and I'd say despite the offering being not fantastic, the lounges would be quieter than the domestic QP and you have access to self-serve alcohol all day long.
One factor to consider would also be if they posses lounge membership from Priority Pass or AmEx, in addition (or instead of) Qantas Club. I would argue that the House and Centurion lounges are a cut above the usual domestic fare.

They usually stamp the D sticker
Outbound dommigration stamps the D sticker and customs on arrival collects your boarding pass.

Apologies for the crossing posting, but I think some who follow this thread may benefit from this data point.

Back in December I called up Qantas to request 2 economy classic award seats released for today (January 9) for MEL to PER. Initially I requested QF9 since that departs from the international terminal so Flounge access. They tried but sadly the computer said no. I followed up several times in the ensuing days leading up to the flight again being told flat out no. Decided to roll the dice today at check-in at MEL. Told my Uber driver to drop me off at the international terminal, proceed to First class check-in and inquired if they could move me from QF777 and QF9. Agent was skeptical it would happen but gave it a shot and fortunately was able to move onto the service. I think part of the reason I was successful here was that I went to First check-in rather than domestic check-in as I reckon (and I could be wrong) that they have more tools available to them to make such changes. Additionally, they would be the people I'd need to speak to, to check-in for my flight should the switch be successful. So for those who have been banging at the door and have been told, "No," give it one more go at international checkin.

Heh interesting approach.
Great it worked.
But no more tag flights on that route in a few months time.
(SYD - PER) - ROM FCO will be the be only one soon.

I figured there was an 80% chance I'd have the walk of shame to the domestic terminal at MEL but thought I'd give it a go. Worse case I'd humiliate myself in front of my girlfriend (but that wouldn't be the first time I've done that).

As my father would say, that's no skin off my nose, being SYD based. In this instance everything worked out just beautifully: caught JQ63 to MEL then QF9 to PER to enjoy two Flounges. Will be interesting to see whether I can take advantage of the QF5 from SYD to PER. But reading this thread there does seem to be a number of opportunities to use the international Flounge on domestic flights, now that air travel has picked up.

A question for the community to consider. All else being equal (including schedule), when does it ever make sense to fly JQ/QF out of a domestic terminal? The only drawback I see is the extra couple of minutes to clear dommigration and dustoms (domestic immigration and customs) and the limitation of no liquids over 100 ml. In terms of prioritization, I reckon the airport would give priority to international departures for take offs and landings over domestic (all else being equal)

Being able to waltz through security last minute and onto a plane.
Also being able to use the flow forward last minute. I've definitely finished work, hopped on an uber and changed my flight forwards (once so far that I almost missed the new time).

Also less risks when aircraft runs into technical issues. You're more likely to get another 737 to swap into your slot but if you have no other 787s then well you're stuck at the F Lounge for a while (good and bad in that situation). Whilst they will likely just return you to a Dom flight, theres just a fair bit more time and work to go backwards through everything and into the new terminal.

The international liquids policy applies for carry on - which may affect some people's decisions vs flying domestic where they do not.

And yesterday
Amazingly yes and this time it actually departed on time. Pity for those hoping to make maximum use of the Flounge! This is arguably one of the few times where some passengers would really be hoping for an extended delay.

That's true although one wonders how many people take advantage of the additional liquids allowance flying domestic. In my case I almost always pack towards TSA rules as I check in a bag that has liquids or anything that could remotely set of security here in Australia as the rules are unclear from airport to airport. For instance, are nail clippers allowed through security when flying domestically? Certainly the safety razors I pack aren't.

I usually have a water bottle with water in my bag. If I'm going through stricter security I'll have it emptied out then refilled, but I'd prefer not to if possible. Sometimes i even bring bottles that are 1L in size depending on the situation.

I almost always get pinged at int security for full size deodorant … other than that I agree, everything is usually 100ml compliant.

Yep, that caught me out during a trip last year. Had to visit one of the airside shops to buy a “travel” size deodorant that was a third of the size but 3 times the price. Grrr….

You would have been on Cloud 1/9

On the flip side you've got deodorant that is 9x better than what you had before!

But certainly if you can find a JQ classic award, then this is a real no brainer. 6,400 QFF points + ~$20 in taxes n fees to visit the Flounge and fly one of Australia's luxury airlines to boot on one of their wide-bodies ain't bad!
Better still if you can buy them for $49 in early Feb in the recent Fare Frenzy!! I pay an extra $90 so I can get 30kgs of luggage, choice of seat, meal, flexibility to cancel, points and 20 status credits. But even paying $139 it’s line ball with the cost of the Classic Reward, and much better value.

They're fun but absolutely no way I would consider a tag flight equal to a regular domestic flight, especially if travelling for work. For me:
  1. Tag flights, especially on JQ, have a propensity to be (very) late;
  2. If you're checking a bag, 60 min check-in cut off vs 30 mins at domestic;
  3. Additional trouble going through the ABF inspection on arrival, it's rarely an extra couple of minutes - it can take quite some time if the queue is long or if ABF are not ready for you (seems to always happen to me).
I fly international often enough that I am not going to go out of my way for the lounges. Flying domestically in Australia is already enough of a sh!tshow, I don't want to subject myself to it taking even longer.

Looks like it'll also be running on time today
It would seem like the ideal solution here would be to book the JQ flight down to MEL on Friday then catch the JQ flight back to SYD on Monday thereby providing two licks at the Flounge for less than your cab ride to the airport!
