With the recent and upcoming "enhancements" to QFF, and especially the loss of anytime access for Platinum, going for DJ Gold (do you DJ'ers have similar inappropriate acronyms?) is looking like a real possibility. And with the softfall from QF WP to SG I can dedicate 11 months to DJG without flying or loosing any benefits over at QF.

My limited knowledge of the program is it is based on $'s spent rather than flight credits accumulated. So my question is, how much do I have to spend to reach and then retain DJG? Typically I would spend about $10k-15K annually flying domestic Y.

It looks like it's about $9,000.

$4,000 to go to Silver (20,000 status credits at 5 SC per $1), then:
$5,000 to go to Gold (30,000 status credits at 6 SC per $1 - to a total of 50,000).

The changes haven't affected me enough to make me want to jump ship, but I'm certainly going to keep my options open.

At least on Virgin Blue and Pacific Blue flights it’s $ based. As a Red, you make 5 points per $, Silver is 6 point per $ and Gold 7 point per $. You need 20,000 points to get Silver, 50,000 to get Gold. Obviously you can see it’s easier to retain, but it’s still a huge spend comparatively.

You can get a status match to your Platinum or Gold if you like, but I personally think they’re a bit away from being a good match to QF.

You need 50k status credits to earn and retain gold -- how you get there depends entirely on the flying you do.

If it's all domestic whY, it's calculated based on $$ spent -- a bit under $10000 worth of fares (not including CC surcharges or ancillary purchases).

If you fly internationally, the status credit earn is mostly mileage based (depending on carrier) .. in most cases it's 1 status credit per mile (moar for premium cabins, less in some cases for super-discounted fares).

? Typically I would spend about $10k-15K annually flying domestic Y.
At that level of spend - they would say welcome to DJ Gold!

Climbing the DJ ladder to Gold

Silver @ 20,000 Status Credits = $4,000 x 5 s.c. per $
Gold @ +30,000 (i.e. 50,000 s.c.) = $5,000 x 6 s.c. per $

Spend in First Year = $9,000

Retaining Gold

Gold @ 50,000 s.c. = $7,143 x 7 s.c. per $

Spend to Retain = $7,143

Fast Track to Gold

But, I reckon that there's a good chance we might see an advertised status match, to fast track QFF disaffected precious metals to DJ "guests" quicker than that! Or there may even be a non-advertised one happening right now, why not check at a DJ Lounge next time your fly with them? (Just have your QFF card handy to show them.)

Beyond DJ Gold

I think that it has been hinted at on AFF by insiders, that Virgin Blue is considering a new level beyond Gold, so might be worth waiting a little longer to see it launched, especially if it comes with a QFF status match?

So a $129 dollar fare plus $10 baggage would initially earn 129*5 or 139*5?

And then when I get gold and spend the $539 I will get 539*7=3,773, so 13 one way corporate plus fare's between BNE-MEL and you can retain Gold, doesn't sound to hard!

Thanks for all that. I think my DJ year resets in November, so I wont be making any rash decisions before that.

Just did a quick comparison of my DJ domestic travel in one calendar year, consisting of:

  • 5x PER-SYD return
  • 1x SYD-CBR one-way
  • Mixture of flexible and cheap fares
On DJ I earned 23,064 points, which is enough to retain silver.

On QF (if I was already silver) I would have earned 26,762 points and 290 status credits, which would also be enough to retain silver.

Not sure what that proves, but I found it interesting anyway.

It proves you could be Silver in either program, and while you may get priority check-in with DJ, you have more flight choices with QF surely? There are pro’s and con’s each way.

More flights flown = more opportunities! Rather a no-brainer, until DJ fly the same number of flights each day as QF.

Which brings toi mind the recent ticketing/check-in hassles with DJ - at least if something happens with QF and Jet* you get more than a pizza voucher! On the next plane and up, up and away!

and, if they can then secure *alliance... :)

More likely to be some sort of Virgin alliance…

Virgin Atlantic, Virgin America, Virgin Blue… maybe even Virgin Galactic I guess :p

With QF and QP/PS/SG/WP/CL perhaps, but not with JQ.

Goodluck on your slow descent out of QFF (at least you'll have a soft landing!). Maybe crazydave will comp you DJ gold!

In threads on AFF in recent months discussing status comparisons between LCC and full service airlines, I've used similar terms for the DJ status tiers to what is used for QF status.

NR = Nothing Red = Velocity red
PS = Plebian Silver = Velocity silver
WG = W4nk3r Gold = Velocity gold

That fails to take into account how those names were originally developed…

You’d need to take a sampling of status members, possibly in a lounge meet, to decide appropriate names :p

It was reading the thread describing where the QF terms originated from, that gave me the impetus to come up with the terms I did for the DJ status tiers.
At the time I started using those DJ terms, the thought of possibly needing to formalize the terms was not likely to ever be needed to happen. Things change.

FCR = Free Card Red = Velocity Red (major benefit of Red)
BTS = Bag Tag Silver = Velocity Silver (major benefit of Silver :p)
WSG = 'Where's Star?' Gold = Velocity Gold (for the DJ elites waiting for anytime/anywhere lounge access)
SBP = Should be Platinum = Velocity Gold but averaging far more SC's than WSG requires

My proposed DJ acronyms :p

The key part of this is the the acronyms were develpoed over HP's in a QP.

To get the correct flavour or mood for such development in relation to DJ, a meet needs to be organised in a Lounge somewhere over a few ales (or complimentary lounge beverage of choice) :p ;)

When we're all status matched it should be easy enough to do :)
