QF Status Credits on credit card spend - trial

Temporarily went offline, back up now. And for anybody wondering "How do I apply for the credit card status credits trial?" (a question we've received a few times now), the users for this trial have already been chosen before invites went out this week.

(I understand that 0.1% of the userbase was selected by examining their credit card and flying behaviour, dependent on certain criteria.)

If too many hit higher status levels then something will have to give. It will be interesting to see what happens.

if someone has to spend $60k on a high end CC to get 150 SC you can bet your backside a fair % of that spend is going to be on travel stuff and no doubt on QF to probably easily make WP if not higher. I don't see this as any more than a nice little tidbit that *might* push a couple of silvers to Gold, but really they'd have to fly to use it so it's not a big deal. More fodder for the "we have even more ways for you to earn" type marketing.
 
As this is following the US trend of offering 'qualifying miles' on CC spend/sign up, how long will it be before our airlines introduce 'minimum spend levels' for status qualification. As of January 1, all major US airlines will have this system in place.

I am wary of anything that makes status easier to earn which does not include flying on the 'home' airline.

It's a funny one really.

For years one could attain AA million miler status purely on CC spend (I am not sure if that one is still around or not?) yet yes the revenue programs have put in minimums. the QF 4 ~ (long in place) was the starting point of this sort of thing. The push for the LB SC's and now CC SC's not counting to P1 is an indicator that QF are starting to draw a line here, though P1 is so high anyway that it's a relatively small number who this would even affect.

To me, the QF Status Credit system, like BA TP and even AN did this back in the day, is partially revenue based - long before the yanks went there - because higher SC earn has always been on the higher fare classes (well always being last 20 years or so since they introduced SC's). Sure no minimum spend there, but there kind of *is* when you combine the 4 QF~ requirement with numbers of SC's based on fare type that while you could make WP on 4 QF~ (eg: SYD-LHR iN F r/t x2) that would be very unusual.

I do agree that say putting a $A5k (for example) revenue QF spend on say Platinum would make it harder (ie can't do it all on not-so-cheap-now AA runs or cheap MH fares) it's likely most would hit whatever the spend target was anyway to attain the status anyway.

I agree that non US programs have always been more spend focused to earn status through SC etc, but with AA EXP now being USD12k (~AUD16k) to earn, I would like to think I could retain QF WP for less than half of that spend.
 
I think we are a lot closer to minimum spend for status than people think. That will literally bring the house down.

Only QF has the market power to bring it into Australia. VA could only follow (it would be suicidal otherwise).

While QF could bring it, it has always had much greater correlation between fares and SCs - with First earning 6x discount Y, unlike the US airlines where historically the Business/First fares only got a small points premium.
QF also doesn't tend to discount J/F fares as much as US airlines (eg. KUP/YUP fares)

Pointswise VA has always been highly correlated with $spend -- if buying Flexi fares (say $500 SYD-MEL - compare the earn as a Plat on VA versus QF)
 
The $ spend needed and cap makes it pointless imho.

I am absolutely, totally 100% against this trial.

Status credits are the last bastion of a frequent flyer program. If you can buy status credits you can buy status. And that too me would be disastrous.

If the trial becomes permanent I reckon it would be 12 months before status attain and retain levels are increased.

The only thing higher than WP that this could get you to is the 2,400 SC middle level for PG or some bonus points, and the best way to get there fast would be using the loyalty bonuses as well, but that only drops the total SC earn to 2,050 SC... still a lot of flying.
 
I would love to have a QF credit card in Europe...

On the other hand: I have an AB business credit card. Every Euro gives a status mile. Spendings at Shell give 2 miles. 50K Miles = Gold (Saphire) and 100k Miles Platinum (Emerald). That adds Lounge access on Virgin and Etihad Airways partners.

My AB Gold is quite a nice addition to my QF Platinum (Etihad, Virgin, AB Exclusive Waiting Areas).

Most of my spendings are on fuel - so I have an AB Diesel Gold ;-).

Regarding the bad financial status of AB I enjoy it as long as it lasts.

I credit my AB flights to QF (until WP is requalified) then to AB.
