QF to Confirm Points Upgrade Requests as late as at the gate when boarding

Asked for an at the gate upgrade today, no such thing, when did they shelve it?

They never did have it. The 'at the gate' is when you request an upgrade via the regular channels, and if it does not clear at the T-x window that is specified for your FF level, it may still be cleared up until you board (ie, beep at the gate with a new BP issued). That's all it means :)

Hi all,

Just received confirmation of an upgrade from discount Y to W on QF107 LAX - JFK on Monday 23rd. I requested J & W. Does anyone know if a J seat becomes available will Qantas upgrade at the gate even though i've been confirmed in PE already?

#firstpost :)

I believe once confirmed, that is it.

I don't know if it possible to resubmit for an (upgraded) PE to J, but I suspect not.

As serfty said, it is probably unlikely but if you ring and ask, the worst they can say is no.
There is the elusive chance of an op-up but it may not be likely because EF is showing J1 C1 D1 I0 U0 W4 R4 T1 Y9 B9 H9 K9 M9 L9 V9 S5 G0 E0.

Did you get an upgrade on your Australia-LAX leg (assuming you are only transiting in LAX)?

Forgot to mention there are 2 of us and just to make it harder there has been an aircraft change from refurbed 747 to and old three class.

I did get the J upgrade on the 6th dec from MEL to LAX. Was confirmed the day before and J was showing 0. I also knew that W was oversold by 5 and Y by 18. Still not sure how we managed to get the upgrade for 2 but happy to take it :)

Well snowflyer that is a very good upgrade to get as MEL -LAX is quite a long flight. How many points for the upgrade?

72k each. Paid $1489 return to NYC and requested the upgrade a few months ago. Best use of points!!

15k for one way disc Y to W, LAX-JFK.

Got it at the gate today on qf127. . . Saw the wait listed J seat disappear from my booking earlier today and thought all hope was lost :(

Fortunately got to the gate and spotted a J BP with my name on it for 12A :) :)

Rather than start a new thread, I thought I would add this here, flew QF89, Brisbane to Noumea last Saturday, my wife was in J class on a separate though linked booking, I requested an upgrade with points as soon as I made my booking in Y, didn't hear anything so I presumed cabin was full, thought I ask at the gate out of curiosity, sorry no upgrades are available I was told.
I counted at least 4 free J seats, swimbo agreed, certainly spare seat next to her. Why didn't Qantas want my points for the upgrade, I guess they would prefer that I spent the points on toasters.
If they are unlikely to give an upgrade on a short flight like that, what chance does one have of getting upgrades elsewhere? Makes me think twice about trying to use points for an upgrade in the future.
Anyone know the reasoning that is used for upgrades? In this case they will probably come back and say that catering wasn't available :)

Basically, if they give away upgrades until the J cabin is full, high tier FFers will only buy Y and not J (as they will get upgraded first).

No doubt there's an algorithm as to how many they can/cant give per flight.

Firstly, did you use the option to 'opt in' for an upgrade an the airport on the day? That way if the upgrade doesn't clear the day prior you still have the another chance. This must be done ahead of time and cannot be done on the day at the airport.

Secondly as that flight is a codeshare flight with Air Calin SB159 it's quite likely that the spare seats in J were Air Calin's allocation of seats for that flight so QF maye have had zero J seats available in their allocation.

It's possible the gate staff thought you were just asking for a free upgrade as often happens. When you opt-in for an airport upgrade & there are J seats still available or noshow pax in J in QF's allocation you would have received the upgrade when they close the flight around 45 mins prior to departure.

Thinking about what was said to me at the gate, allocation was mentioned so it was probably to do with the codeshare arrangement, thanks for your replies. Also I wasn't aware of the 'opt in' option, I'll remember that for next time.

Didn't think this warranted a new thread, and I feel like this is a question I should know the answer too...

I have a points upgrade request in from PE to J, LAX to SYD - I just got an Expert Flyer alert that there is a U class seat available on my flight - is it possible to call Qantas and grab it, or does it not work that way?

I assume you paid for PE - and if so, no unfortunately not.

If it was a points booking, you can call and stump up the extra points to make it a J award.

How soon is your flight? If more than a few days away then there's no upgrade happening yet (although someone might snag an award).
